KEY GAME INFORMATION
NY YANKEES: NEW YORK (AP) - Derek Jeter is saying goodbye. Masahiro Tanaka is saying hello.
Jacoby Ellsbury, Brian McCann and Carlos Beltran are new to the Bronx; David Robertson is new to the closer's role. And Alex Rodriguez is nowhere to be seen.
Mariano Rivera and Andy Pettitte have retired, and Robinson Cano has moved to Seattle.
After missing the playoffs for only the second time in 19 years, the New York Yankees will look a whole lot different. And for the first time since 1998, they don't have baseball's highest payroll.
''I think it is probably the biggest transition I've been through,'' manager Joe Girardi says.
For only the second time in team history and the first time since 1947, every position on opening day other than the mound will be manned by a different Yankees player on opening day than in New York's previous opener.
New York's forgettable 2013 season began with an 8-2 loss to Boston, with Kevin Youkilis at first, Cano at second, Eduardo Nunez at shortstop, Jayson Nix at third, Francisco Cervelli behind the plate, Vernon Wells in left, Brett Gardner in center and Ichiro Suzuki in right.
The only holdover for Tuesday's opener at Houston figures to be Gardner, who has shifted to left. The rest of the starting lineup figures to have McCann behind the plate, Mark Teixeira at first, Brian Roberts at second, Jeter at shortstop, Kelly Johnson at third, Ellsbury in center and Beltran in right.
CC Sabathia will be the constant on the mound. He's coming off the poorest of his 13 major league seasons at 14-13 with a 4.78 ERA.
''Nobody wants to go through that again,'' he says. ''It sticks with me a lot. Just being disappointed in not being able to help this team win. I feel like if I could have been a little better we might have made the playoffs. I blamed myself for a long time in the offseason and now I'm over it and ready to go this year.
DETROIT: DETROIT (AP) - When Justin Verlander takes the mound for Detroit on opening day, maybe then the Tigers will be able to enjoy a much-needed sense of normalcy.
As an offseason of drama gave way to spring training injuries, it was easy to forget the Tigers still have one of the most talented rosters in baseball. Sure, there have been some early problems for new manager Brad Ausmus to address, Detroit still figures to be the favorite to win its fourth consecutive AL Central title.
''We have a new look this year,'' outfielder Torii Hunter said. ''Little bit more speed and we'll miss the big man, but we'll score some runs.''
The ''big man'' is Prince Fielder, whom the Tigers traded to Texas in a blockbuster deal that brought second baseman Ian Kinsler to Detroit. That move gave the Tigers more financial flexibility, although they weren't all that aggressive in pursuing free agents. Detroit did sign Joe Nathan to replace departed closer Joaquin Benoit.
The Tigers also traded right-hander Doug Fister to Washington.
Lately, the focus has been on right-hander Max Scherzer, who enters his final season before free agency after winning the Cy Young Award in 2013. Negotiations with the Tigers on a long-term deal have stalled.
''They respect where I'm at. I respect where they're at, and we'll revisit this after the season,'' Scherzer said. ''I still want to be in Detroit. I love this clubhouse and everything about it. There's been a history of this team signing free agents so hopefully I'll be a part of that history as well.''
But right now Scherzer's future is uncertain, and with Hunter and Victor Martinez in the final season of their contracts, it's hard to say what Detroit's 2015 roster will look like.
So the Tigers may never have a better chance to win a World Series with this group than right now.

*Yankees-Tigers Preview* ========================

By JORDAN GARRETSON STATS Writer

New York (67-61) at Detroit (70-59), 7:08 p.m. EDT

Rick Porcello continues to look like one of the best young pitchers in baseball, while Brandon McCarthy has resembled an almost entirely different hurler since being traded to the New York Yankees.

They'll take the mound as visiting New York tries for a season-best sixth straight win Tuesday night in the opener of a three-game series against the Detroit Tigers.

Porcello (14-8, 3.10 ERA) tossed a three-hitter Wednesday in a 6-0 victory at Tampa Bay. He entered the season with no shutouts through 149 starts but has thrown three this year.

The right-hander is the first Tiger to blank three teams since Jeff Weaver in 2002, and he's thrown 165 1-3 innings - 16 2-3 shy of his career high in 2011.

"There's a stage in most good pitchers' careers where they turn a corner, so maybe we're seeing that with Rick," manager Brad Ausmus told MLB's official website.

Porcello is 2-1 with a 2.84 ERA in his last five starts against the Yankees, losing 1-0 in New York on Aug. 7 after going seven innings.

McCarthy is 5-2 with a 1.90 ERA in eight starts since being acquired from the Diamondbacks, for whom he was 3-10 with a 5.01 ERA.

"We knew he was a better pitcher than his numbers indicated," manager Joe Girardi said.

McCarthy also comes off a complete game, limiting Houston to four hits in Thursday's 3-0 victory.

He defeated Detroit 2-1 on Aug. 4, giving up one unearned run in 5 2-3 innings to improve to 3-0 with a 0.46 ERA in his last three matchups.

Two games ahead of the Yankees and one-half game behind Seattle for the second wild card, Detroit (70-59) collected 18 hits in a 13-4 win at Minnesota on Sunday after having 17 in an 8-6 victory Saturday night. The Tigers' 60 hits in that series were their most in a four-game set since registering 60 at Chicago from July 6-8, 1956.

Victor Martinez went 8 for 17 with five RBIs over the last four while rookie shortstop Eugenio Suarez was 8 for 15. Martinez is 6 for 15 against the Yankees this year.

Sunday's outburst came despite the absence of Miguel Cabrera, who sat out after aggravating a sore ankle Saturday. Ausmus expects him to play Tuesday.

"We've been kind of waiting for this for a while," Ausmus said. "... It was nice to have those guys pick Miggy up."

Cabrera has hit .345 with five homers and 14 RBIs over his last 15 home games against New York (68-61).

The Yankees' best equalizer against Porcello may be Jacoby Ellsbury. He was 3 for 5 with three RBIs, including his 11th home run and 1,000th career hit, in Monday's 8-1 win over Kansas City.

Ellsbury has batted .444 over his last seven games, has hit safely in 13 of his last 14 matchups with Detroit and is 8 for 13 with two homers against Porcello.

Mark Teixeira (hamstring) and Brett Gardner (ankle) sat out Monday for the Yankees but are expected to be back in the lineup Tuesday.

New York took three of four from the Tigers at home earlier this month, limiting them to six runs and 24 hits.
