KEY GAME INFORMATION
HOUSTON: HOUSTON (AP) - Coming off three straight 100-loss seasons, the Houston Astros are confident they'll be better this year.
How much? They aren't putting a number on that. But after setting a franchise record with a whopping 111 defeats, they have a simple target.
''It's our goal to be the most improved team in major league baseball (and) I believe ... we have the group together and we can actually accomplish that,'' second-year manager Bo Porter said.
There are several reasons why the Astros are certain they can improve. They brought in several established players this offseason to pair with the many young players who got their first significant playing time last season. They also could get some reinforcements soon from top prospects who are inching closer to being major league ready.
General manager Jeff Luhnow's rebuilding plan has already boosted Houston's minor league system from the worst in baseball to one of the best. He expects that work to start paying dividends this season in the majors.
''We have a young team. We're still going to make some mistakes,'' he said. ''Our young players have improved but still need some development. We brought in some veterans to help stabilize the team this year. We're going to see a big improvement as a result of those two dynamics.''
CLEVELAND: CLEVELAND (AP) - Jason Kipnis didn't want it to end. He had plenty of company.
After the final out ended the club's magical, turnaround season so jarringly last October, Kipnis, who made his first All-Star team in 2013 and a few of his teammates lingered in the dugout and watched as Tampa Bay's players celebrated their 4-0 win in the AL wild-card playoff game.
One and done. Hardly the finish Cleveland wanted.
And once again, the city would remain without a major sports championship, a drought approaching its 50-year anniversary.
But despite their brief postseason appearance in manager Terry Francona's first year, the Indians intend to play in October again - and again.
''We don't want it to be a fluke,'' Kipnis said. ''We don't want to be a one-trick pony. We want to be at the top and we want to stay there.''
Hoping to build off their unexpected 92-win campaign, the Indians enter 2014 confident they can not only contend this season, but go even further.
During spring training in Arizona, first baseman Nick Swisher, who also serves as the club's high-energy hype man, handed out ''Unfinished Business'' T-shirts to his teammates.
The Indians aren't satisfied.
''Last season, hopefully, was a steppingstone that we needed to get us going in the right direction,'' Swisher said. ''Last year was that amazing year to get us in the right mind frame to say, `Hey, we can do this. We are a team. And people need to start recognizing it.'''
Cleveland had to win its final 10 games just to make the playoffs. The late-season kick wouldn't have been necessary if the Indians had played more consistently, and more evenness has been a focus for Francona, who feels his club has the makings to do something special again.
''I love our team,'' said the AL's manager of the year. ''I love coming to the ballpark and watching them play. They are easy to like because they try hard. When you can show up with a group of guys and you respect the way they go about things it makes the challenging times more fulfilling. We know we can do it now. We've got to try and go do it better.''

*Astros-Indians Preview* ========================

By JEFF MEZYDLO STATS Senior Writer

Houston (54-74) at Cleveland (64-62), 7:05 p.m. EDT

Having halted their struggles against the Cleveland Indians, the Houston Astros can set their sights on securing a winning road trip.

The Astros attempt to do so while Collin McHugh tries to win a third straight start Saturday night.

Houston (55-74) totaled 15 runs during a six-game slide against Cleveland that ended with Friday's 5-1 victory. Rookie Jon Singleton's three-run homer highlighted a four-run ninth inning where the Astros capitalized on two errors.

"It's huge, that's what winning ballclubs do," said Singleton, who is batting .187 in 70 games but has 12 home runs and 40 RBIs.

"When teams are making small mistakes like that, other teams capitalize and come out with the win."

By also snapping a six-game losing streak at Progressive Field, the Astros have won four of five and improved to 5-3 on a trip where they split four against Boston then took two of three from the Yankees.

McHugh (6-9, 3.00 ERA) has allowed one run in each of his last four starts, going 2-0 while striking out 22 over 25 1-3 innings. The right-hander overcame seven hits and four walks in six innings of an 8-1 victory over the Red Sox on Sunday.

"Results are great, but I think it's obviously still a work in progress," McHugh told MLB's official website. "Every day you're coming to the park and trying to get a little bit better."

He'll make his first appearance against the Indians (64-63), who have recorded one run and five hits in each game during back-to-back losses after winning seven of nine.

The Indians lead the majors with 99 errors after committing 98 when they made the playoffs in 2013.

"If we want to stay in this thing, we're going to have to play a lot cleaner," manager Terry Francona said. "Losing is one thing, but losing like that is another. Obviously, we need to do better. We can't play like that and expect to win."

Zach Walters has provided the scoring in the last two with a pair of homers, and he also went deep in Wednesday's 5-0 win at Minnesota. Half of Walters' 16 hits in 75 at-bats over 42 games with Washington and Cleveland this season have left the park, and are all solo shots.

"You see him here and you can see why he's hitting the ball out of the ballpark," Francona said. "He's taking a lot of good swings."

Indians All-Star outfielder Michael Brantley, meanwhile, is 2 for 26 in the last seven games.

Cleveland's Danny Salazar (4-6, 4.79) was recalled Sunday to start against Baltimore and allowed two runs in five innings of a 4-1 loss.

The right-hander made progress from his previous outing Aug 6, when he yielded five runs on two homers in four innings of an 8-3 defeat at Cincinnati.

Facing the Astros for the first time, Salazar hopes to add to All-Star Jose Altuve's struggles at Progressive Field, where he's 2 for 18 in five career games.
