| | | SAN DIEGO: SAN DIEGO (AP) - It's almost as if last season didn't end for the San Diego Padres.
The Padres go into 2014 trailing the Los Angeles Dodgers and with one of their starting pitchers already having arm trouble.
There had been a general air of optimism surrounding the Padres, who are coming off seasons of 91, 86 and 86 losses. Their rotation has been bolstered, as well as their player payroll.
Then came word late in spring training that newcomer Josh Johnson, penciled in as the No. 3 starter, is expected to be out four to five weeks after straining his right forearm.
That still leaves a projected rotation of Andrew Cashner, Tyson Ross, Ian Kennedy and Eric Stults, with a number of pitchers to choose from to replace Johnson.
''I think we have the talent on the mound, through our 12 guys that are going to make our team, to pitch well,'' manager Bud Black said. ''There's a health component here like all teams. We've got keep our best players on the field.''
The Padres signed Johnson to an $8 million, one-year contact less than two months after he had bone spurs removed from his pitching elbow. He was 2-8 with a 6.20 ERA in 16 appearances last season with Toronto.
When Johnson returns, the Padres hope he and Ian Kennedy can return to their old form.
Kennedy was acquired from division rival Arizona at the trading deadline. He went 4-2 with a 4.24 ERA with San Diego after going 3-8 with a 5.23 ERA in 21 starts with the Diamondbacks. Johnson was an All-Star with the Marlins in 2009 and 2010, and led the NL with a 2.30 ERA in 2010.
The Padres will be tested right away. They open at home Sunday night against the defending NL West champion Dodgers and their $225 million payroll, led by ace Clayton Kershaw, himself a $215 million man. The Dodgers already sit atop the division after sweeping the Diamondbacks in a two-game series in Sydney.
| | LA DODGERS: LOS ANGELES (AP) - The Dodgers have spent big bucks on their roster, ramping up World Series expectations right along with the payroll. Now they want to produce results. They'll get the chance starting Saturday in Australia, where they open the season against NL West rival Arizona. With a payroll in the range of $225 million-plus, the Dodgers have laid the groundwork to get to their first World Series title since 1988, when they won the title. They came up short last year, losing to St. Louis in six games in the NL championship series. ''The expectations going in this time are realistic. We're a talented club and we're capable,'' said manager Don Mattingly, who signed a three-year extension in January. The Dodgers want to avoid the poor start they had last season, when key players were injured and the team had to rally to get back into the division race. They eventually won the title by 11 games over the Diamondbacks. ''We need to be more consistent,'' Mattingly said. ''I see it as winning every series and you'll be in pretty good shape. The next thing you know, you're 20 games over .500.'' First baseman Adrian Gonzalez is looking to follow up his strong season last year, while shortstop Hanley Ramirez, who was injured in the NL championship series, will be playing to set himself up for impending free agency.

*Padres-Dodgers Preview* ========================
By NOEY KUPCHAN STATS Writer
San Diego (59-66) at Los Angeles (71-57), 10:10 p.m. EDT
While the San Diego Padres may be glad to miss Zack Greinke, they can't be happy about his replacement.
Clayton Kershaw will instead take the mound Thursday night when the Los Angeles Dodgers close a three-game home set against the Padres.
Originally scheduled to start Friday, Kershaw (14-3, 1.86 ERA) was moved up to give Greinke (elbow) extra rest. The two-time NL Cy Young Award winner threw a shortened bullpen session Tuesday and will be pitching on regular rest thanks to Monday's day off.
Kershaw is looking to bounce back after suffering a rare loss Saturday against Milwaukee. The left-hander, who had posted a 1.16 ERA in winning his previous 11 decisions, threw a five-hitter - but allowed two home runs for the first time this season - and struck out 11 in the 3-2 defeat.
"He's the best pitcher in baseball and he's been on a historically great run. It's incredible," Brewers slugger Ryan Braun told MLB's official website. "It's kind of fun to watch from afar. It's obviously extremely difficult to beat him. It hasn't happened much this year."
Leading the majors with six complete games, Kershaw is looking to win a third consecutive start versus the Padres. He struck out 11 in a three-hitter in a 2-1 victory July 10, improving to 10-6 lifetime against them.
The NL West-leading Dodgers (71-57) have dropped five of seven after falling 4-1 on Wednesday, and their lead over San Francisco has been reduced to three games. Scott Van Slyke had two of Los Angeles' six hits as the team went 0 for 5 with runners in scoring position.
Eric Stults threw five strong innings for San Diego (58-66), which improved to 11-6 this month. The Padres haven't posted a winning record in any full month since going 16-11 last September.
Tyson Ross (11-11, 2.70) had allowed two earned runs or fewer in 10 consecutive starts before Friday's 4-2 loss at St. Louis. The right-hander yielded three runs and four walks over six innings, dropping to 2-4 with a 3.44 ERA in his last six road outings.
"Plain and simple, I just didn't have fastball command the first inning," Ross said after walking the first three batters he faced. "It's hard when you shoot yourself in the foot like that."
Ross has never beaten the Dodgers, going 0-3 in his last four starts despite a 2.63 ERA. He's struck out 31 over 24 innings during those showings while receiving a combined two runs of support.
Ross has had a rough time with Carl Crawford, who is 6 for 10 with two doubles in their matchups. Crawford, 16 for his last 33, figures to be back in the starting lineup after grounding into a fielder's choice as a pinch hitter Wednesday.
Padres outfielder Cameron Maybin entered Wednesday's game as a defensive replacement in his return from a 25-game suspension for testing positive for an amphetamine. Maybin is hitting .247 with one homer in 63 games.
"When Cam is right, he's a good player," manager Bud Black said. "We've got to get Cam back to where he's a big contributor. His numbers were down a little bit before (the suspension)."
Maybin is 4 for his last 36 against the Dodgers and 2 for 18 versus Kershaw.
