| | | NY YANKEES: NEW YORK (AP) - Derek Jeter is saying goodbye. Masahiro Tanaka is saying hello.
Jacoby Ellsbury, Brian McCann and Carlos Beltran are new to the Bronx; David Robertson is new to the closer's role. And Alex Rodriguez is nowhere to be seen.
Mariano Rivera and Andy Pettitte have retired, and Robinson Cano has moved to Seattle.
After missing the playoffs for only the second time in 19 years, the New York Yankees will look a whole lot different. And for the first time since 1998, they don't have baseball's highest payroll.
''I think it is probably the biggest transition I've been through,'' manager Joe Girardi says.
For only the second time in team history and the first time since 1947, every position on opening day other than the mound will be manned by a different Yankees player on opening day than in New York's previous opener.
New York's forgettable 2013 season began with an 8-2 loss to Boston, with Kevin Youkilis at first, Cano at second, Eduardo Nunez at shortstop, Jayson Nix at third, Francisco Cervelli behind the plate, Vernon Wells in left, Brett Gardner in center and Ichiro Suzuki in right.
The only holdover for Tuesday's opener at Houston figures to be Gardner, who has shifted to left. The rest of the starting lineup figures to have McCann behind the plate, Mark Teixeira at first, Brian Roberts at second, Jeter at shortstop, Kelly Johnson at third, Ellsbury in center and Beltran in right.
CC Sabathia will be the constant on the mound. He's coming off the poorest of his 13 major league seasons at 14-13 with a 4.78 ERA.
''Nobody wants to go through that again,'' he says. ''It sticks with me a lot. Just being disappointed in not being able to help this team win. I feel like if I could have been a little better we might have made the playoffs. I blamed myself for a long time in the offseason and now I'm over it and ready to go this year.
| | TEXAS: ARLINGTON, Texas (AP) - The Texas Rangers are already hurting significantly even before the start of a new season.
In a span of three days the week before opening day, the Rangers scratched ace Yu Darvish from that scheduled start because of neck stiffness, and found out they would be without second baseman Jurickson Profar and catcher Geovany Soto for 10 to 12 weeks each because of injuries.
Sure, the Rangers know there are going to be injuries during the season.
''We just didn't expect it to be all at this point,'' general manager Jon Daniels said.
The Rangers, after missing the playoffs last year for the first time in four seasons, already knew they would be missing lefty starters Matt Harrison and Derek Holland to start the season.
At least Harrison, who had a mild setback early in camp after his back issues last season, should return within the first month. Holland could miss at least half the season because of left knee surgery after being tripped by his dog on stairs in his home in January.
The only three position players remaining from the Rangers' last World Series in 2011 also missed games this spring with lesser nagging issues. But shortstop Elvis Andrus, third baseman Adrian Beltre and designated hitter Mitch Moreland should all be in the lineup Monday against Philadelphia.
After missing the playoffs for the first time in four years and scoring their fewest runs (730) in a full season since 1992, the Rangers' two most significant offseason moves were to improve their offense.
They got durable slugger Prince Fielder from Detroit by trading Ian Kinsler, a move that cleared the way Profar to be an everyday player. Free agent outfielder Shin-Soo Choo was signed to a seven-year deal - the same time left on Fielder's contract - to take over the leadoff spot.
Only Mike Trout (564) and two-time AL MVP Miguel Cabrera (562) reached base more the past two season than Choo (556) and Fielder (542), who has the longest active streak in the majors playing in 505 consecutive regular-season games - and 809 of 810 the past five years.
''I just want Prince to be Prince,'' said manager Ron Washington, starting his eighth season in Texas. ''I just want him to do what he does, and let everyone else does what they do, and everything will work out.''

*Yankees-Rangers Preview* =========================
By JEFF MEZYDLO STATS Senior Writer
New York (54-51) at Texas (42-64), 8:05 p.m. EDT
Despite nearly letting a six-run lead slip away, the New York Yankees are grateful they have a much-needed victory to build on.
They'll look to do so in the decisive series finale against the Texas Rangers on Wednesday night.
Brett Gardner homered for the third time in two games, had three other hits and caught Adrian Beltre's fly ball at the warning track with the bases loaded for the final out of New York's 12-11 win Tuesday. The Yankees (55-51) broke out after totaling 10 runs while losing their previous three.
"It was great to get out of here with a win," said manager Joe Girardi, whose bullpen held on after allowing seven runs in three innings.
"It would have been a bad one to lose."
Gardner went 1 for 12 while the Yankees lost two of three at home to Toronto over the weekend, but is 7 for 10 with five extra-base hits in this set. He's 11 for 19 with four doubles and four home runs in the last five against the Rangers (42-65).
"He's playing every day," Girardi told MLB's official website. "He physically feels good."
Derek Jeter, who passed Carl Yastrzemski for seventh on baseball's career hit list Monday, is 8 for 16 in the last four contests.
He's 3 for 5 with two homers during the regular season against Colby Lewis (6-8, 6.23 ERA), who is 0-4 with a 9.70 ERA in seven home starts since beating the Chicago White Sox on April 19 for his only victory in Arlington this year.
The right-hander gave up 13 runs and 13 hits in 2 1-3 innings of a 15-6 loss to the Los Angeles Angels there July 10. Despite also losing his next two on the road, Lewis yielded five runs in 11 1-3 innings in those outings.
He gave up three in 6 1-3 innings of a 4-2 loss at Yankee Stadium on Thursday.
Amid a rough season for himself and the Rangers, Lewis remains optimistic after missing last season while recovering from elbow surgery, then undergoing a hip operation.
"I feel like as the season has gone along, I've gotten stronger and stronger, which is great," Lewis said.
New York counters with Hiroki Kuroda (7-6, 3.99), who is 2-0 with a 3.60 ERA in his last four starts but hopes for a better performance after yielding four runs in 5 2-3 innings on two homers in a 6-4 victory over Toronto on Friday.
The right-hander went 1-3 with a 3.70 ERA and received 20 runs of support in his first seven road starts, but despite a 4.26 ERA over the last three, he's gone 2-0 and been backed with 16 runs.
Kuroda posted a 4.50 ERA while losing his first two starts at Texas before giving up six hits in seven innings of a 2-0 victory last season there.
J.P. Arencibia had a grand slam, a solo shot, two doubles and seven RBIs on Tuesday. Arencibia, who has been up and down from the minors this season, had four homers and 15 RBIs while batting .152 in his previous 31 games this season for Texas.
"He knows he will play," manager Ron Washington said. "It builds confidence."
Arencibia is 9 for 24 with three doubles and a home run versus Kuroda. Teammate Alex Rios, who is 5 for 9 in the series, is 3 for 9 against Kuroda.
