| |  | ST LOUIS: ST. LOUIS (AP) - Last October, the St. Louis Cardinals were sufficiently flush with arms that they carried rookie Shelby Miller and deposed closer Edward Mujica in ceremonial roles and made it to Game 6 of the World Series against Boston.
After leading major league rookies with 15 wins, Miller was limited to one postseason inning due to concerns about a heavy workload. Mujica was used only in mop-up duty after mid-September.
The National League champions are perhaps even deeper, across the board, entering opening day March 31 at Cincinnati. The team that tied for the major league high with 97 wins has a surplus of viable candidates.
''I think we have the potential to be great,'' said ace Adam Wainwright, who won 19 games and finished second in NL Cy Young balloting. ''We just have to go out there, not listen to the hype, and perform.''
The 32-year-old Wainwright qualifies as the grizzled leader of a rotation that could include three members coming off big rookie debuts. Michael Wacha was a postseason sensation and the NLCS MVP, Miller went wire-to-wire as the fifth starter and Carlos Martinez, who's had an impressive spring, moved into the setup role when fellow rookie Trevor Rosenthal took over as closer.
Wacha and Martinez are 22, Miller and Rosenthal just 23.
There's also 15-game winner Lance Lynn, who struck out 10 in four innings of his last spring training start, and lefty Jaime Garcia could fit into the mix sometime in April coming off shoulder surgery. And don't forget Joe Kelly, another rookie who won 10 games and was the rotation's strongest starter much of the second half.
And one of the National League's best lineups, too.
Much is expected from a loyal fan base that extends several states, and that's OK.
''Our expectations,'' Lynn said, ''are higher than theirs.''
| | SAN DIEGO: SAN DIEGO (AP) - It's almost as if last season didn't end for the San Diego Padres.
The Padres go into 2014 trailing the Los Angeles Dodgers and with one of their starting pitchers already having arm trouble.
There had been a general air of optimism surrounding the Padres, who are coming off seasons of 91, 86 and 86 losses. Their rotation has been bolstered, as well as their player payroll.
Then came word late in spring training that newcomer Josh Johnson, penciled in as the No. 3 starter, is expected to be out four to five weeks after straining his right forearm.
That still leaves a projected rotation of Andrew Cashner, Tyson Ross, Ian Kennedy and Eric Stults, with a number of pitchers to choose from to replace Johnson.
''I think we have the talent on the mound, through our 12 guys that are going to make our team, to pitch well,'' manager Bud Black said. ''There's a health component here like all teams. We've got keep our best players on the field.''
The Padres signed Johnson to an $8 million, one-year contact less than two months after he had bone spurs removed from his pitching elbow. He was 2-8 with a 6.20 ERA in 16 appearances last season with Toronto.
When Johnson returns, the Padres hope he and Ian Kennedy can return to their old form.
Kennedy was acquired from division rival Arizona at the trading deadline. He went 4-2 with a 4.24 ERA with San Diego after going 3-8 with a 5.23 ERA in 21 starts with the Diamondbacks. Johnson was an All-Star with the Marlins in 2009 and 2010, and led the NL with a 2.30 ERA in 2010.
The Padres will be tested right away. They open at home Sunday night against the defending NL West champion Dodgers and their $225 million payroll, led by ace Clayton Kershaw, himself a $215 million man. The Dodgers already sit atop the division after sweeping the Diamondbacks in a two-game series in Sydney.

It's well known how bad the San Diego Padres' offense is but less so that the St. Louis Cardinals are baseball's second-lowest scoring club.
Surging right-handers Lance Lynn and Tyson Ross figure to be eager to face these offenses in their matchup to open this three-game series at pitcher-friendly Petco Park on Tuesday night.
San Diego (46-59) owns baseball's worst offense, averaging 3.1 runs with 72 homers - the third-lowest total in the majors. The Padres' .218 batting average is baseball's worst and only the 1972 Texas Rangers (.217) finished with a lower mark since the divisional era started in 1969.
St. Louis (56-48) boasted the NL's top offense a year ago with 4.8 runs per game, but that figure is down to 3.7 in 2014. The Cardinals have homered a league-low 68 times.
Games at Petco Park average 6.1 runs - baseball's lowest figure. That figures to play to the advantage of Lynn (11-7, 3.05 ERA) and Ross.
Ross owns the NL's best ERA in July at 1.03 while Lynn is not far behind at 1.75.
Lynn's three-start win streak ended last Wednesday when he yielded two runs over 6 1-3 innings in a 3-0 defeat to Tampa Bay. He struck out seven and threw 118 pitches - his second-highest total.
"He did a great job of keeping us in that game," manager Mike Matheny said. "Threw a lot of pitches but really fought to keep us in."
Lynn is 1-1 with a 5.73 ERA in two career outings against the Padres - both in St. Louis. Will Venable has faced him the most among San Diego hitters, going 4 for 7 with a homer.
Ross (9-10, 2.65) is seeking his first career three-start win streak after limiting the Chicago Cubs to one run in six innings with a career-high 11 strikeouts last Thursday in a 13-3 road win.
"The power fastball-slider combination was there," manager Bud Black said. "It's devastating."
That combination has resulted in Ross' 58.6 groundball percentage that is second in the majors to Houston's Dallas Keuchel.
Ross has never started against the Cardinals, allowing an unearned run in three innings of relief over three appearances.
St. Louis is hoping Matt Holliday can continue his surge as it searches for offense. Holliday has found his power stroke of late - hitting half of his 10 homers in his last 11 games, including two this weekend as the Cardinals took two of three on the road from the Cubs.
Matt Carpenter, among the NL's leaders with a .320 road average, went 6 for 13 with four runs scored in that series.
San Diego welcomed back second baseman Jedd Gyorko for Monday's 2-0 loss at Atlanta - the 16th time it was shut out. Gyorko, who went 1 for 3 and is batting .164, was out since June 4 with plantar fasciitis in his left foot.
Third baseman Yangervis Solarte will make his home debut after being acquired last Tuesday in the deal that sent Chase Headley to the New York Yankees. Solarte went 0 for 4 against Lynn earlier this year for New York.
The Cardinals took four of six from the Padres last year.
