KEY GAME INFORMATION
NY METS: NEW YORK (AP) - Five straight losing seasons. That's what the New York Mets have produced since moving into Citi Field.
David Wright, for one, is tired of it.
''We need to start going out there showing results,'' the star third baseman said. ''The last couple years we've kind of been hampered by some contracts and payroll issues. It seems like that's behind us. At the same time, we've got those prospects knocking at the door. I think we're in a better place now than we have been the past few years and quite frankly, I think we have a better team.''
Translation: No more waiting for next year. No more selling the future. No more excuses.
It's time to take a step forward - and that means winning.
General manager Sandy Alderson seems to think so, too. After he signed free agents Curtis Granderson, Bartolo Colon and Chris Young this offseason, a report emerged that Alderson told staffers he thinks the Mets can win 90 games (with a payroll under $90 million).
Even hard-core fans found that overly optimistic, especially with ace Matt Harvey expected to miss the entire season following Tommy John surgery. New York posted its second consecutive 74-88 record last year - and that was with Harvey on the mound most of the way.
But there is reason for hope, particularly in Triple-A. Touted young pitchers Noah Syndergaard and Rafael Montero could soon join a promising rotation that includes Colon, Zack Wheeler, Dillon Gee and Jonathon Niese.
''He's got all the traits of the good ones,'' manager Terry Collins said about Syndergaard. ''He's on track to be special.''
The offense could be better with the addition of Granderson, who got a $60 million, four-year deal after an injury-plagued season for the Yankees across town. His left-handed power bat should provide some much-needed protection for Wright.
The multitalented Young, on a one-year contract following a down season in Oakland, appears highly motivated to regain his All-Star form.
''It's been interesting to watch the whole team,'' Granderson said early in spring training. ''There's power here. Chris Young has been amazing.''
The lineup remains flawed and prone to strikeouts, though the roster has improved. Perhaps not enough to push Washington and Atlanta in the NL East just yet, but the Mets expect to take significant strides this season as they anticipate Harvey's return in 2015.
''When I re-signed here, I knew it wasn't an overnight fix. I think I like that part of the challenge of it,'' Wright said. ''I want to be part of the reason why we get this thing turned around and headed in the right direction and ultimately start winning again. I think we have that ability.''
SEATTLE: SEATTLE (AP) - Robinson Cano was just the start. The Seattle Mariners didn't stop with one major splash in trying to catch up with the best in the AL West.
Even so, there remain many questions about whether Seattle's additions as a whole can improve a team coming off a 71-win season.
The moves made by Seattle general manager Jack Zduriencik were in hopes of improving the Mariners and solidifying his own future after a shaky offseason that started with Eric Wedge's decision not to return as manager.
Lloyd McClendon is getting his second shot as a major league manager nine years after he was last leading a club in Pittsburgh. Along with Cano, Seattle signed outfielder Corey Hart, closer Fernando Rodney and traded for designated hitter Logan Morrison.
Despite those moves, there remain concerns about the depth of Seattle's rotation beyond ace Felix Hernandez and whether players the Mariners have been waiting for to finally pop can establish themselves as reliable, everyday starters.
Yet the Mariners believe they will be competitive in one of baseball's toughest divisions.
''We're ready to win. That's what it's all about,'' Hernandez said. ''We're ready to win ballgames in Seattle. We're ready to be in the playoffs, we're ready to do that.''

*Mets-Mariners Preview* =======================

By JEFF BARTL STATS Writer

New York (46-51) at Seattle (52-45), 10:10 p.m. EDT

Seattle manager Lloyd McClendon knows he has to take a special approach with his younger players, something that requires patience when overseeing a club expecting to contend in the AL West.

Rookie starter Roenis Elias is going through a rough patch at the moment, but that could be coming to an end as he faces the sputtering New York Mets' offense at home Monday night.

The signing of Robinson Cano immediately increased expectations for the Mariners (52-46), who are in third place behind major league-best Oakland and the Los Angeles Angels.

Seattle dropped two of three to the Angels over the weekend, though both defeats came on walk-off hits. Fernando Rodney blew a one-run lead in the ninth Sunday as the Mariners fell 5-4.

"We've had a lot of tough losses this year, so this is not one we're going to dwell on," McClendon said.

Cano, hitting .335, sat out the series finale with soreness in his hamstring and is considered day to day.

"It's been a tough grind for him," McClendon said. "He's only had one day off in the first half, played in the All-Star Game, traveled. It just makes sense."

It's also been a rough go for Elias (7-8, 4.54 ERA), who has lost his last three starts while posting a 10.05 ERA. He gave up seven runs in 3 1-3 innings of an 8-1 loss to Minnesota in his last outing July 9.

The 25-year-old left-hander has given up at least four runs in five of his last seven starts.

"One thing we forget with young players, and pitchers in particular - this game can be really cruel sometimes," McClendon said. "One thing I told (Elias) is, we'll get through these growing pains. We'll be there every step of the way. He'll bounce back."

Facing the Mets' lineup could be exactly what Elias needs.

New York (46-52) scored once over the final 18 innings while dropping the last two of a three-game set with San Diego, and it was no-hit through 7 2-3 innings of Sunday's 2-1 loss.

Daniel Murphy's double marked the Mets' first hit, and Seth Smith had an RBI single in the ninth

"I think we saw in the fourth time through the lineup we started having better at-bats," Murphy said. "I got the base hit, David (Wright) got the base hit. So the next time we'll have a better idea."

The Mariners are averaging only 2.2 runs over their last 13, and Mets starter Jonathan Niese will look to keep their lineup in check again as he comes off the disabled list.

Niese (5-4, 2.96) hasn't allowed more than three earned runs in any of his 17 starts, but his last outing was cut short due to a strained left elbow. He allowed one run and left after facing just three batters in New York's 6-5 win over Texas on July 4.

Daisuke Matsuzaka will head back to the bullpen with Niese returning, but manager Terry Collins said Matsuzaka could step in if the left-hander needs to exit early.

"That's the role (Matsuzaka) is going to fill," Collins told MLB's official website. "I think he brings a real useful piece to our pitching staff."

Niese has never faced Seattle, which has won seven of the nine all-time meetings. These teams haven't played since 2008.
