KEY GAME INFORMATION
TEXAS: ARLINGTON, Texas (AP) - The Texas Rangers are already hurting significantly even before the start of a new season.
In a span of three days the week before opening day, the Rangers scratched ace Yu Darvish from that scheduled start because of neck stiffness, and found out they would be without second baseman Jurickson Profar and catcher Geovany Soto for 10 to 12 weeks each because of injuries.
Sure, the Rangers know there are going to be injuries during the season.
''We just didn't expect it to be all at this point,'' general manager Jon Daniels said.
The Rangers, after missing the playoffs last year for the first time in four seasons, already knew they would be missing lefty starters Matt Harrison and Derek Holland to start the season.
At least Harrison, who had a mild setback early in camp after his back issues last season, should return within the first month. Holland could miss at least half the season because of left knee surgery after being tripped by his dog on stairs in his home in January.
The only three position players remaining from the Rangers' last World Series in 2011 also missed games this spring with lesser nagging issues. But shortstop Elvis Andrus, third baseman Adrian Beltre and designated hitter Mitch Moreland should all be in the lineup Monday against Philadelphia.
After missing the playoffs for the first time in four years and scoring their fewest runs (730) in a full season since 1992, the Rangers' two most significant offseason moves were to improve their offense.
They got durable slugger Prince Fielder from Detroit by trading Ian Kinsler, a move that cleared the way Profar to be an everyday player. Free agent outfielder Shin-Soo Choo was signed to a seven-year deal - the same time left on Fielder's contract - to take over the leadoff spot.
Only Mike Trout (564) and two-time AL MVP Miguel Cabrera (562) reached base more the past two season than Choo (556) and Fielder (542), who has the longest active streak in the majors playing in 505 consecutive regular-season games - and 809 of 810 the past five years.
''I just want Prince to be Prince,'' said manager Ron Washington, starting his eighth season in Texas. ''I just want him to do what he does, and let everyone else does what they do, and everything will work out.''
NY YANKEES: NEW YORK (AP) - Derek Jeter is saying goodbye. Masahiro Tanaka is saying hello.
Jacoby Ellsbury, Brian McCann and Carlos Beltran are new to the Bronx; David Robertson is new to the closer's role. And Alex Rodriguez is nowhere to be seen.
Mariano Rivera and Andy Pettitte have retired, and Robinson Cano has moved to Seattle.
After missing the playoffs for only the second time in 19 years, the New York Yankees will look a whole lot different. And for the first time since 1998, they don't have baseball's highest payroll.
''I think it is probably the biggest transition I've been through,'' manager Joe Girardi says.
For only the second time in team history and the first time since 1947, every position on opening day other than the mound will be manned by a different Yankees player on opening day than in New York's previous opener.
New York's forgettable 2013 season began with an 8-2 loss to Boston, with Kevin Youkilis at first, Cano at second, Eduardo Nunez at shortstop, Jayson Nix at third, Francisco Cervelli behind the plate, Vernon Wells in left, Brett Gardner in center and Ichiro Suzuki in right.
The only holdover for Tuesday's opener at Houston figures to be Gardner, who has shifted to left. The rest of the starting lineup figures to have McCann behind the plate, Mark Teixeira at first, Brian Roberts at second, Jeter at shortstop, Kelly Johnson at third, Ellsbury in center and Beltran in right.
CC Sabathia will be the constant on the mound. He's coming off the poorest of his 13 major league seasons at 14-13 with a 4.78 ERA.
''Nobody wants to go through that again,'' he says. ''It sticks with me a lot. Just being disappointed in not being able to help this team win. I feel like if I could have been a little better we might have made the playoffs. I blamed myself for a long time in the offseason and now I'm over it and ready to go this year.

*Rangers-Yankees Preview* =========================

By NOEY KUPCHAN STATS Writer

Texas (39-58) at New York (49-47), 7:05 p.m. EDT

The New York Yankees and Texas Rangers have been trying to shore up their injury-depleted starting rotations for much of the season.

While Miles Mikolas has yet to come through for Texas, New York's Shane Greene has shined since getting called back up two weeks ago.

Set to make his home debut, Greene tries to win a third consecutive start Monday night in the Yankees' first meeting of the season with the major league-worst Rangers.

With Ivan Nova, CC Sabathia, Michael Pineda and All-Star Masahiro Tanaka all sidelined, Greene (2-0, 1.32 ERA) is getting a chance to prove himself.

"Any time guys go down to injury, it gives other guys opportunity," captain Derek Jeter told MLB's official website. "When you have those opportunities, you need to make the most of it. (Greene's) done that. He's come out and thrown strikes and put us in a position to win every time he's pitched."

The right-hander allowed two runs over six innings to win 5-3 at Cleveland on July 7, then struck out nine over 7 1-3 innings of four-hit ball in last Saturday's 3-0 victory at Baltimore.

"We were really excited about him in spring training and what he could possibly do for us," manager Joe Girardi said. "We felt that he could help us at some point this year, and the time is now."

Mikolas (0-2, 10.05), meanwhile, has yet to find his form since getting called up July 1. The right-hander has been helping fill in for injured starters Derek Holland, Matt Harrison and Martin Perez.

Mikolas surrendered one run through five innings before giving up four more in the sixth last Saturday in a 5-2 defeat to the Los Angeles Angels.

"He's got to figure out a way to get through that," manager Ron Washington said of Mikolas' disastrous sixth inning. "You just got to minimize the damage."

Things aren't about to get any easier for Mikolas against the Yankees (50-47), who are coming off a three-game sweep of Cincinnati. Jacoby Ellsbury went 4 for 4 and scored the winning run in Sunday's 3-2 walkoff victory after the Reds appeared to lose Brian McCann's popup in the sun.

"He can do anything on the baseball field. He showed all his tools today," McCann said of Ellsbury. "He does this on a nightly basis."

Ellsbury is batting .382 with five extra-base hits - two homers - over an eight-game stretch. He went 8 for 19 against Texas with Boston last year.

The Rangers (39-59) own a 4-24 record since June 17 after dropping 10 of 11. They are 20 games below .500 for the first time since finishing the 2003 season 71-91.

Texas saw its woes continue in Sunday's 9-6 loss at Toronto despite a season-high four RBIs from rookie outfielder Dan Robertson. Leonys Martin added three hits and scored twice.

"I'm not upset with the way we're playing," Washington said. "Those guys put us in a position to be able to win some ballgames. We've just got to pitch better."

Shin-Soo Choo, hitless in his last 21 at-bats with 11 strikeouts, should be back in the lineup after getting a day off to clear his head. He's a career .220 hitter versus New York, his lowest mark against any AL club aside from Houston.

It's looking like fellow outfielder Alex Rios will miss a second consecutive game with a sprained right ankle. Rios has hit safely in 11 straight against the Yankees, batting .370 with eight RBIs and five stolen bases.
