KEY GAME INFORMATION
PHILADELPHIA: PHILADELPHIA (AP) - Ryan Howard and his teammates have heard critics say the window has closed for the Philadelphia Phillies.
They just don't believe it.
After a dominant run that included five straight NL East titles, two pennants and the 2008 World Series championship, the Phillies have missed the postseason two consecutive years. They have an aging core of players who've been declining.
Howard, Chase Utley, Jimmy Rollins and Carlos Ruiz are the remaining regulars from the group that led Philadelphia to its best era of baseball from 2007-11 under former manager Charlie Manuel.
They're determined to make another run.
''We've had a bad couple years and had injuries and all that stuff, but I don't think it's over,'' Howard said. ''People are entitled to their opinions and that's fine, but it's up to us to go out there and show them otherwise and go out and play our game and do what we do.''
General manager Ruben Amaro Jr. refused to start the rebuilding process after the Phillies' first losing season since 2002. Instead, he re-signed Utley and Ruiz and added veteran outfielder Marlon Byrd and right-hander A.J. Burnett in free agency.
If the older players live up to their hefty contracts and younger guys like 2013 All-Star Domonic Brown, Cody Asche and Ben Revere continue to develop, the Phillies should be in contention.
''I think we're positive. We're expecting to win and plan on doing everything we can to ensure that,'' ace lefty Cliff Lee said.
LA DODGERS: LOS ANGELES (AP) - The Dodgers have spent big bucks on their roster, ramping up World Series expectations right along with the payroll. Now they want to produce results.
They'll get the chance starting Saturday in Australia, where they open the season against NL West rival Arizona.
With a payroll in the range of $225 million-plus, the Dodgers have laid the groundwork to get to their first World Series title since 1988, when they won the title. They came up short last year, losing to St. Louis in six games in the NL championship series.
''The expectations going in this time are realistic. We're a talented club and we're capable,'' said manager Don Mattingly, who signed a three-year extension in January.
The Dodgers want to avoid the poor start they had last season, when key players were injured and the team had to rally to get back into the division race. They eventually won the title by 11 games over the Diamondbacks.
''We need to be more consistent,'' Mattingly said. ''I see it as winning every series and you'll be in pretty good shape. The next thing you know, you're 20 games over .500.''
First baseman Adrian Gonzalez is looking to follow up his strong season last year, while shortstop Hanley Ramirez, who was injured in the NL championship series, will be playing to set himself up for impending free agency.

*Phillies-Dodgers Preview* ==========================

By TAYLOR BECHTOLD STATS Writer

Philadelphia (8-10) at Los Angeles (12-7), 10:10 p.m. EDT

While he's put together an impressive scoreless streak on the road, Hyun-jin Ryu is hoping to pitch that way at Chavez Ravine as he makes his first start on the Los Angeles Dodgers' 10-game homestand.

That could be a difficult task against a Philadelphia Phillies team that's showing some punch offensively.

As Ryu goes for his third victory in a row, the slumping Dodgers will try to keep A.J. Burnett from leading the Phillies to a season high-tying third straight win Tuesday night.

Ryu (3-1, 1.93 ERA) has been outstanding while winning all three of his road decisions, including a start in Australia against Arizona on March 23. He's allowed 11 hits while striking out 23 over 26 scoreless innings.

The left-hander stretched that streak to 28 innings dating to last season Thursday, giving up four hits over seven innings in a 2-1 victory at San Francisco.

"Kind of what we needed for him to go seven and go back out there for the seventh," said manager Don Mattingly after Ryu threw a season-high 112 pitches. "It worked out."

Ryu will try to replicate that success at Dodger Stadium, where Los Angeles (12-8) has gotten off to a 2-2 start on its homestand following Monday's series-opening 7-0 loss to the Phillies (9-10).

In his only home start April 4, Ryu surrendered a career-high eight runs - six earned - and eight hits in a career-low two innings of an 8-4 loss to the Giants. He's 0-3 with an 8.25 ERA in his last three home starts dating to last season, giving up 26 hits over 12 innings.

Ryu pitched well in his only career home outing against Philadelphia, allowing two runs over seven innings before Los Angeles pushed across a ninth-inning run for a 4-3 win June 29. Chase Utley hit a pair of home runs and Ben Revere went 3 for 3 with two doubles off Ryu in that game.

Carlos Ruiz homered and doubled twice Monday, while Ryan Howard hit his fifth home run. Following a 7-for-40 stretch, Howard has gone 6 for 10 with two homers and five RBIs in his last two games.

Since totaling three runs without an extra-base hit over their previous four games, the Phillies have scored 17 times with 12 extra-base hits in the last two.

Burnett (0-1, 2.74) hopes to receive that kind of support after he showed no signs of pain Thursday in his first start since leaving with an inguinal hernia April 11. He held Atlanta to three hits over seven innings before Philadelphia scored in the eighth for a 1-0 home win.

"It's going to be a blessing in disguise," Burnett said of the injury. "It helped me stay within myself, be simple, nice and easy."

Burnett, who plans to wait until the offseason to have surgery, has gone 1-2 with a 7.80 ERA in his last three starts against Los Angeles. He's dropped his last four at Dodger Stadium dating to 2001 while with the Florida Marlins.

Aside from a scoring surge against Arizona's Mike Bolsinger in his first career start Saturday, the Dodgers have totaled 11 runs while hitting .189 in six games. They finished with four hits Monday as Adrian Gonzalez extended his hitting streak to 16 contests.
