KEY GAME INFORMATION
NY YANKEES: NEW YORK (AP) - Derek Jeter is saying goodbye. Masahiro Tanaka is saying hello.
Jacoby Ellsbury, Brian McCann and Carlos Beltran are new to the Bronx; David Robertson is new to the closer's role. And Alex Rodriguez is nowhere to be seen.
Mariano Rivera and Andy Pettitte have retired, and Robinson Cano has moved to Seattle.
After missing the playoffs for only the second time in 19 years, the New York Yankees will look a whole lot different. And for the first time since 1998, they don't have baseball's highest payroll.
''I think it is probably the biggest transition I've been through,'' manager Joe Girardi says.
For only the second time in team history and the first time since 1947, every position on opening day other than the mound will be manned by a different Yankees player on opening day than in New York's previous opener.
New York's forgettable 2013 season began with an 8-2 loss to Boston, with Kevin Youkilis at first, Cano at second, Eduardo Nunez at shortstop, Jayson Nix at third, Francisco Cervelli behind the plate, Vernon Wells in left, Brett Gardner in center and Ichiro Suzuki in right.
The only holdover for Tuesday's opener at Houston figures to be Gardner, who has shifted to left. The rest of the starting lineup figures to have McCann behind the plate, Mark Teixeira at first, Brian Roberts at second, Jeter at shortstop, Kelly Johnson at third, Ellsbury in center and Beltran in right.
CC Sabathia will be the constant on the mound. He's coming off the poorest of his 13 major league seasons at 14-13 with a 4.78 ERA.
''Nobody wants to go through that again,'' he says. ''It sticks with me a lot. Just being disappointed in not being able to help this team win. I feel like if I could have been a little better we might have made the playoffs. I blamed myself for a long time in the offseason and now I'm over it and ready to go this year.
BOSTON: BOSTON (AP) - Last season was one to remember for fans of the Red Sox - and one to forget for the players.
Soon after Boston's third World Series championship in 10 years, that bearded bunch decided to put it behind them and focus on what they must do to keep winning.
''It was a dream come true last year,'' pitcher Jake Peavy said. ''It's a new year. I think that's been a slogan of ours on the text messages that we've been exchanging with the guys, `Hey turn the page, it's a new year, it's 2014.' We haven't done anything and, obviously, some teams in our division got awfully better.''
The Red Sox won't be sneaking up on them, not after rebounding from a 69-93, last-place finish in the AL East to a 97-65 record, a 28-win improvement.
''You've got the bull's-eye on your back,'' second baseman Dustin Pedroia said. ''You want to get everybody's best, so I think it's going to be a fun challenge for everybody.''
John Farrell's disciplined, businesslike approach worked in his first year as Boston's manager. That, and the influx of players to improve the toxic clubhouse chemistry, made the one season under the animated Bobby Valentine seem like a distant memory.
Those players, including Jonny Gomes, Mike Napoli and Shane Victorino, return. The Red Sox lost center fielder Jacoby Ellsbury to the New York Yankees then signed Grady Sizemore as a possible replacement. Sizemore missed the last two seasons with knee and back injuries that required surgery but has had a healthy, productive spring training.
''In this group, no one's going to let anybody sit back and relax,'' Pedroia said. ''We're always going to push each other and make sure that we're respecting the game and playing the game the right way. If we do that, we should be all right.''

*Yankees-Red Sox Preview* =========================

By ALAN FERGUSON STATS Writer

New York (11-8) at Boston (9-10), 7:10 p.m. EDT

Jacoby Ellsbury will make his highly anticipated return to Fenway Park when the New York Yankees renew their rivalry with Boston.

The Red Sox will also get their first look at Yankees pitching phenom Masahiro Tanaka in Tuesday night's opener to a three-game series.

Ellsbury spent his first seven seasons with the Red Sox, who drafted him 23rd overall in 2005. His best performance came in 2011, when he became the only Boston player with at least 30 home runs and 30 stolen bases and finished second in the AL MVP voting. After helping Boston win the 2013 World Series, the outfielder signed a seven-year, $153 million deal with the Yankees in December.

"I always enjoyed playing there," Ellsbury told the Yankees' website. "I still have a lot of friends over there. I'm looking forward to it. I'll have some family there (at Fenway), as well."

Ellsbury is hitting .338 for his new club and was 5 for 14 against his former team as New York took three of four from Boston in the Bronx from April 10-13.

The Yankees (11-8) are back home after a 5-1, 12-inning victory at Tampa Bay on Sunday to split a four-game set.

Tanaka (2-0, 2.05 ERA) struck out 10 for the second straight game Wednesday in a 2-0 victory over the Chicago Cubs. The right-hander gave up two bunt singles - including one awarded after a replay - and one walk over eight innings.

Tanaka has 28 strikeouts and two walks in his first three starts. The strikeouts are the most by a Yankees pitcher in his first three career starts, and Stephen Strasburg's 41 strikeouts in 2010 are the most by any pitcher in his first four MLB starts since at least 1914.

"I'm sure that the fans will be heated up a bit," Tanaka said through an interpreter. "I've seen the two teams play (on TV), and I understand there's a rivalry between the two teams going into the game. It should be a good experience going up on the mound that day and I'm very much looking forward to it."

Tanaka will face a Red Sox team that's hitting .238 and has one of the AL's worst slugging percentages at .361. Boston (9-11), however, produced 20 runs in its four-game series against Baltimore and 11 hits in two contests.

The Red Sox had to settle for a split after its comeback from a six-run deficit fell short in a 7-6 loss on Patriots' Day and the first running of the Boston Marathon since last year's bombing.

"Special day. ... Of course, we wanted to go out there and win," first baseman Mike Napoli told the team's website. "We fought hard, but it fell short. But we've got a big series (vs. the Yankees) coming up. We'll take it one day at a time and try to get on track."

Scheduled starter Jon Lester (2-2, 2.17) gave up one run over eight innings while fanning a season-high nine in a 3-1 win over the Chicago White Sox on Thursday. In his prior outing, he yielded two runs over 6 2-3 innings in a 4-2 victory at Yankee Stadium. The Red Sox dropped the next two games in that series but won six of nine matchups at Fenway in 2013.

Derek Jeter, riding a 10-game hit streak, is 22 for 66 all-time against Lester. Ichiro Suzuki has 11 singles in his last 26 at-bats versus the left-hander.
