| | | TEXAS: ARLINGTON, Texas (AP) - The Texas Rangers are already hurting significantly even before the start of a new season.
In a span of three days the week before opening day, the Rangers scratched ace Yu Darvish from that scheduled start because of neck stiffness, and found out they would be without second baseman Jurickson Profar and catcher Geovany Soto for 10 to 12 weeks each because of injuries.
Sure, the Rangers know there are going to be injuries during the season.
''We just didn't expect it to be all at this point,'' general manager Jon Daniels said.
The Rangers, after missing the playoffs last year for the first time in four seasons, already knew they would be missing lefty starters Matt Harrison and Derek Holland to start the season.
At least Harrison, who had a mild setback early in camp after his back issues last season, should return within the first month. Holland could miss at least half the season because of left knee surgery after being tripped by his dog on stairs in his home in January.
The only three position players remaining from the Rangers' last World Series in 2011 also missed games this spring with lesser nagging issues. But shortstop Elvis Andrus, third baseman Adrian Beltre and designated hitter Mitch Moreland should all be in the lineup Monday against Philadelphia.
After missing the playoffs for the first time in four years and scoring their fewest runs (730) in a full season since 1992, the Rangers' two most significant offseason moves were to improve their offense.
They got durable slugger Prince Fielder from Detroit by trading Ian Kinsler, a move that cleared the way Profar to be an everyday player. Free agent outfielder Shin-Soo Choo was signed to a seven-year deal - the same time left on Fielder's contract - to take over the leadoff spot.
Only Mike Trout (564) and two-time AL MVP Miguel Cabrera (562) reached base more the past two season than Choo (556) and Fielder (542), who has the longest active streak in the majors playing in 505 consecutive regular-season games - and 809 of 810 the past five years.
''I just want Prince to be Prince,'' said manager Ron Washington, starting his eighth season in Texas. ''I just want him to do what he does, and let everyone else does what they do, and everything will work out.''
| | OAKLAND: OAKLAND, Calif. (AP) - Before the season has even begun, the Oakland Athletics are dealing with a devastating injury that could affect their chances of chasing a third straight AL West title.
Right-hander Jarrod Parker, who had been the projected opening day starter, was lost to a season-ending elbow injury that required Tommy John surgery - his second such procedure.
Like every year with this low-budget club, somebody always seems to step in and fill the void. Whether that will be enough for Bob Melvin's bunch in a much-improved division is to be determined.
Even before Parker went down, Oakland considered its club an underdog despite winning the last two AL West crowns.

*Rangers-Athletics Preview* ===========================
Texas (11-7) at Oakland (12-5), 10:05 p.m. EDT
Yu Darvish has lost six straight starts to the Oakland Athletics, but the Texas Rangers haven't done much to support him in them.
Support has been nearly non-existent for Darvish so far.
The Rangers ace will try to end his woes against the Athletics as these AL West rivals open their season series by beginning a three-game set Monday night in Oakland.
Darvish (1-0, 0.82 ERA) beat Oakland on May 16, 2012, but has posted a 4.95 ERA in losing his next six meetings. Texas has given him six runs of total support in that slide.
The Rangers (11-8) haven't scored for Darvish in his last two outings since he pitched seven innings to earn a 3-0 victory at Tampa Bay on April 6. The right-hander opened the season with 16 scoreless innings, and yielded his first two runs Wednesday over seven innings in a 3-2 home win over Seattle.
Darvish will be wary of Brandon Moss, who is 5 for 15 with three homers against him as one of only four players to have taken Darvish deep at least that many times.
Whether the Rangers can provide him some offense will depend on how they fare against Dan Straily (1-1, 5.40), who is 3-0 with a 4.03 ERA in his last four starts against them.
No hitter in baseball has fared worse against Straily than Elvis Andrus, who is 0 for 14 with five strikeouts.
Straily gave up six runs over 3 2-3 innings Tuesday in a 10-9, 11-inning victory over the Los Angeles Angels. The right-hander gave up more than three runs for the first time in nine starts.
Oakland slugger Yoenis Cespedes is 3 for 14 with a homer and nine strikeouts against Darvish. He homered a team-high five times against the Rangers last season as the A's took 10 of 19 meetings.
Cespedes left Sunday's 4-1 win over Houston in the seventh inning with a bruised right heel and was replaced by Craig Gentry.
Oakland (13-5) is seeking its third four-game win streak of the season after Josh Donaldson homered and drove in three runs Sunday. Donaldson is hitting .345 with 12 RBIs over his last 12 games.
Texas had its five-game win streak end with Sunday's 16-2 loss to the Chicago White Sox. Kevin Kouzmanoff saw his 10-game hitting streak to start the season snapped, but he is still batting .366.
Kouzmanoff, filling in for an injured Adrian Beltre, will face Oakland for the first time since his time with the A's from 2010-11. Kouzmanoff was traded to Colorado on Aug. 23, 2011, before spending the last two seasons in the minors for two different clubs.
Gentry could play his first game against the club with which he spent his first five seasons, although he has started just four times. He was traded to Oakland in the offseason.
"I want to beat every team, but coming from there, it kind of gives you a little more incentive," Gentry told the Athletics' official website.
Oakland owns an AL-best 2.48 ERA but has committed two errors in four straight games, and has made at least one in nine in a row.
"I don't like it," manager Bob Melvin said. "You can't continually play defense like this and get away with it."
