| | | SAN FRANCISCO: SAN FRANCISCO (AP) - From every slot in a talented, experienced rotation to the back end of the bullpen and in between, to the starting fielders and the role players on the bench, it's hard to find a member of the San Francisco Giants pleased with his 2013 season.
A year after winning the World Series, the Giants finished 10 games under .500, third in the NL West and they missed the playoffs.
''We don't even have to have the conversation, a lot of the guys know it,'' right-hander Matt Cain said. ''We didn't pitch the way that we wanted to.''
As the Giants begin a new year, they will try to keep up with the big-spending Los Angeles Dodgers and regain the grip they had on the NL West when the club won World Series championships in 2010 and `12 - even if everybody expects the Dodgers to be the team to beat.
''You do try to reflect back and try to learn from what happened last year and how you can get better,'' manager Bruce Bochy said. ''You move forward, that's what we had to do. There are some things we'll talk about in the spring, mistakes that we made last year. Also, hopefully guys come in with an attitude, that they weren't happy with what happened the year before and want to get back on track.''
Buster Posey certainly doesn't want to spend too much time thinking about last season.
''That's probably how everybody feels. There's a bad taste in a lot of guys' mouths,'' Posey said. ''We want to come out and focus on winning ballgames.''
| | COLORADO: DENVER (AP) - Justin Morneau wears Larry Walker's old number and is stepping in for Todd Helton.
Just so it's clear, though: He doesn't expect to be the next Walker and certainly isn't trying to make Colorado Rockies fans forget all about Helton, the everyday first baseman in the Mile High City since 1997.
Morneau can only be himself, a slick fielder who's a four-time All-Star and former AL MVP.
That's not too bad, either.
Still, the Rockies wouldn't mind if Morneau channeled a little bit of those two Colorado icons to help them get back to the postseason. But that's a lot of cleats to fill, especially when it comes to Helton, the franchise's leader in virtually every offensive category.
Morneau's goals are more modest: Slide seamlessly into to this potent lineup, one that includes good friend and reigning NL batting champion Michael Cuddyer, along with Carlos Gonzalez and Troy Tulowitzki.
The 32-year-old Morneau knows the comparisons to Helton are inevitable. No. 17 spent 17 seasons in purple pinstripes, endearing himself to the community. The team will honor Helton on Aug. 17 when they retire his number (although Helton's first send-off will be hard to top, when the club gave him a horse in his last home game).
''From the outside looking in, it looks like I'm coming in to replace him,'' said Morneau, who wears No. 33 because of Walker, his boyhood idol. ''But that's not my thought process. My thought process is to just come in and be me and do what I can do.''
Cuddyer thinks Morneau will fit in just fine.
''If you think about the guy you're replacing, you're already not doing yourself a good service,'' said Cuddyer, who was teammates with Morneau in Minnesota. ''He respects (Helton), but he also understands he has to go out there and be himself.''

*Giants-Rockies Preview* ========================
By KEVIN CHROUST STATS Writer
San Francisco (10-8) at Colorado (10-9), 8:40 p.m. EDT
Home or away, the San Francisco Giants have created some good theater this season with plenty of one-run games.
That's also been true in their recent history with the Colorado Rockies, which will continue Monday night at Coors Field.
The Giants (11-8) have seen nine of their last 10 games decided by one run, three of which came as they took two of three against the Rockies in San Francisco from April 11-13.
San Francisco and Colorado have played seven consecutive one-run contests, with the Giants holding a 4-3 advantage and 30-29 scoring edge.
"Unbelievable, man," Giants manager Bruce Bochy said after Sunday's 4-3 win in San Diego. "I've been on a few runs where you play tight games, but never like this. A few more gray hairs, but it goes with the territory. It's who we are."
Limited offense is a big reason why that's been the case. San Francisco had just three hits in the series finale against the Padres and is batting .164 with nine runs in its last five games.
All-Star catcher Buster Posey has been the coldest of the bunch, going 2 for 26 over his last eight games, though he did connect on a two-run homer to give the Giants a first-inning lead Sunday.
"I think my timing's been off a little bit," Posey told the team's official website. "I think I was on time much better today."
The Rockies (10-10) had a one-run game of their own Sunday as they fell 10-9 to Philadelphia and failed in their bid for a three-game sweep.
Shortstop Troy Tulowitzki remained hot with a 3-for-3 day while first baseman Justin Morneau went 2 for 4 with a home run and five RBIs. Tulowitzki went 7 for 9 in the series to boost his season average to .393, and Morneau is batting .421 with three home runs and 12 RBIs in his last five games.
"Mo's pretty locked in right now," manager Walt Weiss told the team's official website.
The hot-hitting Rockies will face Ryan Vogelsong, who has improved in each of his three starts. In Wednesday's 2-1 victory over the Los Angeles Dodgers, he allowed a run on four hits in six innings.
"I think, more than anything, he stayed consistent with his delivery from the first inning," Bochy said.
The positive trend could continue against the Rockies. Vogelsong (0-0, 5.40 ERA) is 5-1 with a 3.06 ERA and .199 opponents' batting average in eight career starts against them. Tulowitzki is hitless in 10 career at-bats against Vogelsong while Carlos Gonzalez is 1 for 13.
Holding the Rockies to those numbers hasn't happened often this season, especially at Coors Field. They're batting .354 and averaging 7.7 runs at home.
So far this year with Jorge De La Rosa on the mound, they've needed that kind of run production. De La Rosa (0-3, 7.58) finally made it out of the fifth inning in his fourth start, throwing six frames of two-run ball while allowing seven hits in Wednesday's 4-2 loss at San Diego.
"I feel good, but we still lost the game," said De La Rosa, who has allowed a home run in each of his starts. "No matter how I did, it's my fault when a mistake is made and we lose the game."
De La Rosa is 1-4 with a 7.36 ERA in his last seven starts against San Francisco.
Gonzalez left Sunday's game with pain in his left knee but said he expects to play Monday. Fellow outfielder Michael Cuddyer has missed three games with a hamstring injury and a disabled-list stint remains possible.
