KEY GAME INFORMATION
TORONTO: TORONTO (AP) - All winter long, the Blue Jays' primary concern was upgrading the starting pitching. The biggest story in Toronto this spring, though, is the one about the free agent arm that got away.
After months of inaction, the Blue Jays thought they'd landed right-hander Ervin Santana on a one-year deal in early March. But when injury concerns flared up in Atlanta, Santana signed a similar deal with the Braves instead.
''I think it's pretty obvious we were involved, it didn't work out. I'm trying to take the high road here,'' general manager Alex Anthopoulos said after Santana turned him down, saying he'd rather pitch in a spacious National League park than face AL East foes in Toronto's hitter-friendly dome.
Anthopoulos, who'd previously come ''extremely close'' to acquiring a starter through trade, must now start the season with almost the same staff he took north last year. Right-handed knuckleballer R.A. Dickey, the 2012 NL Cy Young winner, will be the opening-day starter again, while left-hander Mark Buehrle gets the third slot.
But none of the other three leading contenders, right-handers Brandon Morrow and Drew Hutchison, and left-hander J.A. Happ, have ever pitched 200 innings, and all three are coming off injuries. Morrow was limited to 10 starts last year by a nerve problem in his forearm, Hutchison hasn't pitched in the majors since elbow surgery in 2012, and Happ missed most of 2013 after being hit in the head by a line drive. Happ dimmed his own chances with an awful spring.
Santana, who has topped the 200-inning mark five times, would have given the Blue Jays valuable depth. Without him, there's more chance they'll need starts from touted but untested youngsters like Kyle Drabek, Sean Nolin, and Marcus Stroman.
Still, a confident Dickey insisted Santana would have been more ''bonus'' than ''necessity'' to Toronto. ''I feel like we have what we need,'' he said.
CLEVELAND: CLEVELAND (AP) - Jason Kipnis didn't want it to end. He had plenty of company.
After the final out ended the club's magical, turnaround season so jarringly last October, Kipnis, who made his first All-Star team in 2013 and a few of his teammates lingered in the dugout and watched as Tampa Bay's players celebrated their 4-0 win in the AL wild-card playoff game.
One and done. Hardly the finish Cleveland wanted.
And once again, the city would remain without a major sports championship, a drought approaching its 50-year anniversary.
But despite their brief postseason appearance in manager Terry Francona's first year, the Indians intend to play in October again - and again.
''We don't want it to be a fluke,'' Kipnis said. ''We don't want to be a one-trick pony. We want to be at the top and we want to stay there.''
Hoping to build off their unexpected 92-win campaign, the Indians enter 2014 confident they can not only contend this season, but go even further.
During spring training in Arizona, first baseman Nick Swisher, who also serves as the club's high-energy hype man, handed out ''Unfinished Business'' T-shirts to his teammates.
The Indians aren't satisfied.
''Last season, hopefully, was a steppingstone that we needed to get us going in the right direction,'' Swisher said. ''Last year was that amazing year to get us in the right mind frame to say, `Hey, we can do this. We are a team. And people need to start recognizing it.'''
Cleveland had to win its final 10 games just to make the playoffs. The late-season kick wouldn't have been necessary if the Indians had played more consistently, and more evenness has been a focus for Francona, who feels his club has the makings to do something special again.
''I love our team,'' said the AL's manager of the year. ''I love coming to the ballpark and watching them play. They are easy to like because they try hard. When you can show up with a group of guys and you respect the way they go about things it makes the challenging times more fulfilling. We know we can do it now. We've got to try and go do it better.''

*Blue Jays-Indians Preview* ===========================

By KEVIN CHROUST STATS Writer

Toronto (8-8) at Cleveland (7-8), 1:05 p.m. EDT

Mark Buehrle hasn't required much offensive support this season, but the Toronto Blue Jays' bats have given him plenty and the tools for more are on the way.

The veteran left-hander will go for his fourth win in as many starts Saturday against the Indians with shortstop Jose Reyes set to join the club in Cleveland for the second of a three-game series.

However, Toronto (9-8) placed designated hitter Adam Lind on the 15-day disabled list after originally hoping he'd return over the weekend. Lind has missed the last three games with a lower-back injury, while Reyes hasn't played since opening day due to a strained hamstring.

"It's big, he's a big part of our team," manager John Gibbons told the team's official website of Reyes. "The other guys have held their own and done a nice job for us. But he's a key part of our offense."

Reyes, though, went 4 for 23 against Cleveland last season.

Buehrle (3-0, 0.86 ERA) last won four straight starts with Miami from June 24-July 14, 2012. His third of this season was never in much doubt as he allowed a run on five hits in seven innings of Sunday's 11-3 victory in Baltimore. He's allowed two runs in 21 innings while walking two and striking out 16.

Despite the dominance, a little extra support against the Indians couldn't hurt. Buehrle is 15-17 against Cleveland with a career 4.87 ERA, which is his third worst against AL opponents behind the New York Yankees (6.02) and Los Angeles Angels (4.95).

Buehrle's former Chicago White Sox teammate, Nick Swisher, is 11 for 27 with eight walks against him. Swisher could use a favorable matchup as he comes in batting .185.

"For whatever reason, some players get off to a cold start," manager Terry Francona told the team's official website. "It always happens, and you don't have a remedy or a pill to take."

The Indians (7-9) counter with Corey Kluber, who has improved in each of his three starts, but opponents are batting .347 against him. Kluber (1-1, 5.40 ERA) allowed two runs in 7 1-3 innings of Sunday's 4-3 win over the Chicago White Sox and settled for a no-decision.

"He used all his pitches, worked ahead," Francona said. "He just basically really pitched a really good ballgame."

Kluber has never faced Toronto or anyone on its roster, but the right-hander has won three straight starts at Progressive Field with a 6-0 record and 2.51 ERA in 11 starts there since May 31.

Toronto snapped a two-game skid with a 3-2 victory in Friday's opener. Third baseman Carlos Santana hit his first homer, a two-run shot in the bottom of the sixth that gave the Indians a 2-1 lead, but the Blue Jays took it right back in the top of the seventh on RBI singles from Munenori Kawasaki and Edwin Encarnacion.

Blue Jays left fielder Melky Cabrera continued his hot start with a 4-for-5 night to bump his average to .333. With Reyes returning, Cabrera will likely move out of the leadoff spot.

Fellow outfielder Jose Bautista went 0 for 3 but drew two walks and has reached base in all 17 games. He leads the majors with 20 free passes.

Santana is 3 for 33 in his last nine games. He's a career .326 hitter against Toronto.
