KEY GAME INFORMATION
TAMPA BAY: ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. (AP) - The Tampa Bay Rays feel they have everything it takes to win the World Series and aren't afraid to say it.
The budget-minded franchise that's played into October four out of the past six seasons boosted payroll instead of cutting back this winter in hopes of making another strong run for the playoffs.
''The goal is to be the team that plays the last game of the year and win,'' third baseman Evan Longoria said.
''I felt like we were really close to breaking through last year,'' the three-time AL All-Star added. ''And with the team that we have this year, I'm really excited to go out and try to prove to ourselves that we are good enough to do that.''
The Rays won 92 games a year ago, including a Game 163 tie-breaker to claim a wild-card spot, and have compiled the second-best record in baseball over the past six seasons.
That's not enough for manager Joe Maddon and a hungry collection of players who reported to spring training feeling as if there's unfinished business to tend to after losing to eventual World Series champion Boston in the AL division round.
''I love that our guys feel and think that way. I think it's great,'' Maddon said.
''You'll hear that rhetoric in a lot of clubhouses, whether it's baseball, football or basketball, but you've got to back it up. You have to really believe it. Not just say it,'' he said. ''Some groups say it because they're supposed to say it. Some groups say it because they believe it. Our guys believe it.''
That confidence was bolstered by the Rays' ability to keep most of the key components from last year's roster together, including lefty David Price, who anchors one of baseball's deepest pitching rotations.
Price and just about everybody else expected the 2012 AL Cy Young Award winner to be traded, however the Rays wound up giving him a $14 million one-year deal, in addition to re-signing first baseman James Loney and landing free agent closer Grant Balfour in moves that represent a big chunk of a club-record payroll of around $80 million.
Andrew Friedman, the team's vice president of baseball operations, also traded for catcher Ryan Hanigan and infielder Logan Forsythe to give Maddon additional flexibility filling out a batting order around Longoria and 2013 AL rookie of the year Wil Myers.
''Talent can't win every game for you, but it's a good start,'' said Loney, who signed a three-year, $21 million deal - largest since Tampa Bay has given to a free agent since Stuart Sternberg became principal owner.
''If we can stay healthy, if we can do the things we're capable of doing,'' second baseman Ben Zobrist add, ''we certainly have as good or better chance than any other team in the league to win it all.''
BALTIMORE: BALTIMORE (AP) - The transformation of the Baltimore Orioles clubhouse under manager Buck Showalter is complete.
No longer do the Orioles hope to win. They expect it.
When Showalter took over in July 2010, he inherited a team with the worst record in the majors. Having gone without a winning season since 1997, Baltimore could only hope Showalter's knack for orchestrating quick turnarounds would take hold in a town that had switched its allegiance from baseball to football.
By 2012, the Orioles were back. Baltimore won 93 games, beat Texas in the wild-card matchup and took the New York Yankees to the limit before falling in the AL division series.
After missing the postseason last year, the Orioles are poised for a return. They maintained the nucleus of a team that went 85-77 and was in contention to the final week, then added right-handed starter Ubaldo Jimenez and slugger Nelson Cruz to an already potent lineup that led the majors in home runs in 2013.
''When you have talent, you have confidence,'' right fielder Nick Markakis said. ''Put them together and good things usually happen. We've got that right now. We know we have a good team and we're going to roll with it.''
Although Jimenez and Cruz didn't come aboard until after the start of spring training, Showalter never wavered in his belief that the Orioles would challenge the defending champion Boston Red Sox and retooled Yankees in the AL East.
''I felt that way whether or not we added Nelson and Jimenez,'' he said. ''That's a poor reflection on me and my staff if we thought we needed more to win.''

*Rays-Orioles Preview* ======================

By JEFF BARTL STATS Writer

Tampa Bay (7-7) at Baltimore (6-7), 12:35 p.m. EDT

The Baltimore Orioles and Tampa Bay Rays entered this series looking to get their offenses back on track.

While Baltimore scored early and often in the opener, Tampa Bay is still searching for an answer to its hitting slump.

After Tuesday night's meeting was postponed because of rain, the Orioles seek a fifth victory in seven tries Wednesday as they send Miguel Gonzalez to the mound against the visiting Rays.

After scoring five runs in 30 innings while dropping two of three to Toronto over the weekend, Baltimore (6-7) surpassed that total in the first three innings Monday on its way to a 7-1 victory that ended a four-game skid against Tampa Bay.

Matt Wieters and J.J. Hardy each went 3 for 4 with an RBI, and No. 9 hitter Ryan Flaherty drove in his first two runs of the season as the Orioles finished with 13 hits.

"A lot of big two-out hits, a lot of big RBIs with guys on second," said Wieters, who is batting .395 (15 for 38) in his last nine games against the Rays. "It wasn't really the long ball that did it, but we found a way to win."

Tampa Bay mustered only one run and four hits in seven innings off Wei-Yin Chen. After scoring 31 runs through their first six contests, the Rays (7-7) have totaled 14 while hitting .192 over the last eight.

"We did hit some balls well. Our geometry is really bad right now. We're hitting balls at people," manager Joe Maddon said. "We just have to keep going up there and battling through it. It's just one of those bad periods."

Tampa likely will have another tough time pushing runs across the plate if Gonzalez is rolling as he was during the latter part of his most recent outing.

Gonzalez (0-1, 9.64) gave up a pair of solo homers in the second inning last Wednesday at Yankee Stadium, but he settled down and finished with a line of three runs in six innings of the Orioles' 5-4 win.

"First I was a little up, a couple of my pitches I couldn't finish," Gonzalez said. "Then toward the end, (Wieters) told me, 'Just be yourself and make your pitches and try not to do too much,' and the last two innings were great."

Gonzalez has struggled with his command in three outings against the Rays, walking 11 in 17 1-3 innings while going 0-2 with a 4.67 ERA. Desmond Jennings is just 4 for 18 off Gonzalez, but he's homered three times and walked three others.

The Rays will counter with Jake Odorizzi, who said his numbers in his last start weren't telling of how well he thought he pitched.

After throwing six scoreless innings in an 8-1 win over Texas on April 4, Odorizzi (1-1, 5.73 ERA) gave up seven runs and 10 hits in five innings of a 7-3 loss to Kansas City last Wednesday.

The right-hander, though, said he was happy with his execution, and Maddon was quick to defend his starter.

"I thought he was really throwing well. He didn't do anything wrong. He threw really well," Maddon said. "People who look at that line are going to misinterpret that outing."

Odorizzi gave up one hit and struck out three in 3 2-3 innings of relief in Tampa Bay's 5-4, 18-inning victory Sept. 20 in his only appearance against Baltimore.
