| |  | MISSISSIPPI ST: As long as star quarterback Dak Prescott is on the field, the Bulldogs have the ability to play with anyone in the SEC. However, after watching them limp to the finish last season, with losses at Alabama and Ole Miss, then a weak showing in a bowl loss to Georgia Tech, you start to wonder just how real last year's 9-0 start was. The good news is that the schedule is friendlier this season. The Bulldogs will host LSU, Alabama and Ole Miss. | | TEXAS A&M: This team could conceivably finish anywhere between first and seventh in the SEC West. The quarterback battle and defensive rebuild are both huge wild cards, though certainly both should be better than last year. The Aggies brought in John Chavis from LSU to run the defense after a disastrous 2014 in which A&M allowed the most rushing yards in the SEC (216.0 per game), finishing the regular season by allowing 300-plus rushing yards to Auburn, Missouri and LSU. |

Mississippi State (3-1) at No. 21 Texas A&M (4-0), 7:30 p.m. EDT
(AP) - Mississippi State's season is back on the upswing after a crucial road win against Auburn.
Now the 21st-ranked Bulldogs (3-1, 1-1 Southeastern Conference) are back in the national rankings and have a little momentum heading into another tough road game against No. 14 Texas A&M (4-0, 1-0) on Saturday.
"I'm sure everyone wants to win the SEC West undefeated, but that doesn't happen very often," coach Dan Mullen said. "But if you get two losses early in the season, that's really hard to come back from."
Mississippi State doesn't have to worry about that after a hard-fought 17-9 win over the Tigers last Saturday. Dak Prescott threw for 270 yards and two touchdowns to help the Bulldogs build a 14-0 lead and then the defense held Auburn to just three field goals.
Now Mississippi State is trying to sort through a strange offensive start to the season.
Mullen has earned the reputation of a coach who likes to run the ball during his seven-year tenure, but the Bulldogs have the fewest running attempts in the league through four games. They had just 56 yards rushing against Auburn.
Yet Mullen scoffed at the idea that Mississippi State needed more balance.
"You know one thing that hasn't been brought up in our offensive meetings? Balance," Mullen said. "The thing that's brought up is how do we get first downs, how do we move the ball and how do we get into the end zone? I'm good with whatever's working."
It's safe to say Mississippi State will need to score more than 17 points to beat Texas A&M.
The Aggies are third in the league with 41.5 points per game and have averaged 40 points over their last three games against the Bulldogs.
Kyle Allen is the SEC's second-rated passer at 179.9, having thrown for a conference-best 11 touchdowns. The sophomore threw for a career-high 358 yards in last Saturday's 28-21 overtime win over Arkansas.
Both of Allen's TD passes, including the game-winning 20-yarder, went to Christian Kirk. The freshman leads the SEC with 442 receiving yards after finishing with 173 last week. Kirk also has starred on special teams, returning four punts for 149 yards and a touchdown as well as 10 kickoffs for 209 yards.
"We're getting a lot out of (Kirk)," coach Kevin Sumlin said. "... We've got enough weapons that can help him out because he's gonna start seeing different coverages, he's gonna start seeing different things. After about game four or five, people figure out it's not a fluke, he's got real talent. Defenses are gonna change."
Prescott doesn't have a go-to receiver but appears well-suited to lead the Bulldogs if the game turns into a touchdown bonanza. The senior has thrown for 1,069 yards, seven touchdowns and no interceptions.
He's thrown 191 passes without an interception dating back to last year's loss to Georgia Tech in the Orange Bowl. The streak is currently the longest in the nation and the sixth longest in SEC history.
Prescott's passing numbers are up from last season, but his running stats are trending down with 121 yards rushing and two touchdowns. The current pace would give him less than half of his 986 yards rushing and 14 touchdowns from last season.
Brandon Holloway, who stands just 5-foot-8 and 165 pounds, is the team's leading rusher with 134 yards.
Prescott believes the Bulldogs can turn back into a running team if needed.
"We're built for whatever," Prescott said. "We've just got to score more points than the other team. Doesn't matter if it's 50 points or 20."
Mullen said the switch to more passing is simply a product of what opposing defenses are giving the Bulldogs. He said teams are still trying to stop Mississippi State's running game so the coaching staff is using its veteran quarterback to make plays.
In the end, he says run-pass mix doesn't matter. The results on the scoreboard do.
"What we want is to score one more point than they score," Mullen said.
The fleet-footed Prescott has been sacked just five times through four games but could face heavy pressure from a Texas A&M defense which has 17 sacks, tied for second in the FBS. Myles Garrett is tied for second nationally with 6 1/2 after notching an SEC freshman-record 11 1/2 sacks in 2014.
Garrett's career high of 10 tackles came against Mississippi State last year and he sacked Prescott once, but the Bulldogs star ran for three touchdowns and threw for two in a 48-31 victory.
However, that game came in Starkville. Mississippi State lost 51-41 at College Station in 2013 despite Prescott's 154 rushing yards.
"This team has got an experienced quarterback who knows how to win and will not be intimidated, been in big environments and won big football games," Sumlin said. "... I think basically it's a team that's not getting the type of respect they should be getting. They're coming in here to prove something. You've got two very similar teams playing, so it's going to be a heckuva game."
Texas A&M is looking to open 5-0 in back-to-back seasons for the first time since 1940 and '41.
