KEY GAME INFORMATION
UTAH: The career of QB Travis Wilson (7.7 YPA, 16 TD, 16 INT) seemed to be over when he was diagnosed with a condition that leaves him prone to head injuries. But he was cleared to play in the spring and could reclaim his starting job over Oklahoma transfer Kendal Thompson (4-for-13, 64 yds, 1 TD, 1 INT). The winner will operate new OC Dave Christensen's up-tempo spread offense. WR Dres Anderson (1,002 rec yds, 7 TD) emerged as a go-to receiver last year, and the Utes get back 6-foot-3 WR Kenneth Scott (360 rec yds in 2012), who missed 2013 with an ankle injury. Utah's pass rush was excellent last year, but lost Trevor Reilly (graduation) and Jacoby Hale (injury) who combined for 15 sacks. DE Nate Orchard (3.5 sacks, 3 FF) and, if healthy, Hale (6.5 sacks) would form a solid pass-rushing combo. S Brian Blechen (8 INT career) comes back from a knee injury to lead a solid secondary.
UCLA: QB Brett Hundley (66.8% comp., 3,071 pass yds, 24 TD, 9 INT; 748 rush yds, 11 TD) passed on the NFL for a chance to win the Heisman and a national title. The Bruins spread the wealth among their many weapons, with WRs Devin Fuller (471 rec yds, 4 TD) and Thomas Duarte (214 rec yds) as Hundley's top targets. RB Jordon James (534 rush yds, 5 TD) is ready for a bigger role behind a big offensive line. The defense made major strides over the past two seasons, allowing 23.2 PPG last year after giving up 31.4 PPG two seasons ago. And while UCLA will have to replace its best player, OLB Anthony Barr, the club has the talent to be even better. LB Myles Jack (76 tackles, 7 rush TD), a two-way star last season, will focus full time on defense. And they have rising stars in DT Kenny Clark (4 TFL) and CB Fabian Moreau (52 tackles, 4 PD).

*Utah-UCLA Preview* ===================

By KEVIN CHROUST STATS Writer

Utah (3-1) at No. 17 UCLA (4-0), 10:30 p.m. EDT

Brett Hundley did it all last season against Utah, but it might have been counterpart Travis Wilson's mistakes that made a one-possession victory possible for the Bruins.

The junior quarterbacks meet for the third time Saturday night at the Rose Bowl with Hundley looking to keep No. 8 UCLA's offense clicking while Wilson could be feeling pressure to keep his job.

The Bruins (4-0, 1-0 Pac-12) ran up their highest road point total in more than 17 years in a 62-27 win at then-No. 15 Arizona State on Sept. 25. Hundley went 18 of 23 for 355 yards and four touchdowns. His 15.43 yards per attempt was his best career mark by three yards, and he also ran for 72 yards and a score on eight carries.

Hundley, who earned Pac-12 offensive player of the week honors, was said to be a game-time decision after injuring his left arm against Texas on Sept. 13.

"I thought he was a little tight at first," coach Jim Mora said. "Then he just relaxed. He played fearless and that's what we were looking for."

The offense got plenty of help on defense and special teams with Ishmael Adams scoring on a 95-yard interception return for a touchdown just before halftime and following it up with a 100-yard kickoff return in the third quarter.

The 580-yard offensive output was certainly diminished by allowing 626 yards, the most the Bruins have given up since 2005. Mora singled out the pass rush, which has produced only four sacks in four games and played a big role in allowing 488 passing yards against Arizona State.

"It needs to improve," Mora said. "We need to win more one-on-one battles. We need to do a better job of creating for those guys and putting them in positions to rush when we know it's going to be a pass. ... Our defensive play needs to improve, and it will. We're working hard at it."

UCLA has won its last 11 games against unranked opponents by an average of 18.4 points, including last season's 34-27 victory in Utah on Oct. 3. Hundley threw a touchdown, ran for another and caught a third to become the first UCLA player to accomplish all three in the same game.

Wilson's game was more infamous with six interceptions as the Utes lost by seven to the Bruins for the second straight season after a 21-14 defeat in Wilson's first career start in 2012.

Mora, though, is more focused on what Wilson has done this year, which amounts to seven TD passes and no interceptions through four games.

"He looks like he's making great decisions," Mora said.

That didn't translate to a win Saturday against Washington State. The Utes (3-1, 0-1) fell 28-27 at home after leading 21-0 after the first quarter and 27-14 early in the fourth.

Coach Kyle Whittingham pointed to one offensive touchdown and 165 yards on 18-of-38 passing from Wilson not being enough. Utah's return game, however, continued to produce as Kaelin Clay returned his third punt for a TD. He also has a kickoff return for a score.

"The kicking game was solid, had another return for touchdown, but when you score one offensive touchdown you don't have much of a chance to win," Whittingham said. "That was really the issue. We have to be more productive, particularly throwing the ball."

That postgame criticism had Whittingham answering questions Monday about a potential change from Wilson to Kendal Thompson, who has seen time in all four games with a 14-for-26 passing mark for 189 yards, a TD and an interception.

"We're taking a look at all possibilities," Whittingham said. "Kendal, in hindsight, probably should have gotten a couple of series in the game Saturday. But we're looking for any and every answer we can come up with offensively. The first two games we played very well offensively. We realize the degree of difficulty increased."

No matter how the Utes line up, they know they're in for another tough test against Hundley after allowing Washington State quarterback Connor Halliday to throw for 417 yards and four scores in the comeback effort.

"As a freshman it was painfully obvious that (Hundley) had a ton of talent, but he has really honed and fine-tuned his game, and he is absolutely a complete quarterback in every sense of the word," Whittingham said.

Utah is 0-6 all-time in trips to UCLA.
