| S CAROLINA: If the Gamecocks are going to be in the SEC title game hunt, it's going to be because of RB Mike Davis (1,535 total yds, 11 TD). The scat back emerged as a star last year and will be leaned on to carry the offense now that QB Connor Shaw is gone. QB Dylan Thompson (8.8 YPA, 4 TD, 3 INT) replaces Shaw. Thompson is more of a classic pocket passer, so much in the Spurrier mold that the ol' ball coach rotated him in for Shaw at times the past two seasons. He and Davis will benefit from one of the nation's best offensive lines. The defense will have a much different look now that Jadeveon Clowney is no longer there. LB Skai Moore (4 INT, 56 tackles) leads a solid linebacking corps, but the Gamecocks are thin at cornerback and have no heir apparent to Clowney and departed DT Kelcy Quarles. | | KENTUCKY: Neal Brown brought the Air Raid offense to Lexington, and improved QB play will allow UK to soar in 2014. Sophomore QB Patrick Towles (5.8 YPA in 2012), a former four-star recruit, has the edge over freshmen QBs Drew Barker and Reese Phillips. The Wildcats should be able to run behind a veteran O-Line and talented backs, including RB Jojo Kemp (482 rush yds, 3 TD) and Nebraska transfer RB Braylon Heard (6.0 YPC in career). DC Mark Stoops brings back the bulk of last year's unit, one that was overmatched at times but has some raw talent. The pass-rush duo of DEs Za'Darius Smith (6 sacks) and Alvin Dupree (7 sacks, 2 FF) could be one of the SEC's best, and the return of CB J.D. Harmon from academic suspension bolsters the secondary. Replacing MLB Avery Williamson will be a challenge. |
