KEY GAME INFORMATION
DUKE: After ending a 17-year bowl drought, the Blue Devils will rely on dual-threat QB Anthony Boone (6 rush TD; 5.6 YPA, 6 TD, 3 INT career) in a more spread offense, as opposed to the pro-style attack under departed QB Sean Renfree. Five-foot-9 WR Jamison Crowder (1,025 rec. yds, 8 TD) is tough to contain. Four starters return to a solid O-Line that hopes to open up more holes for the nation's 100th-ranked rushing offense (101 YPG) that rotates RBs Jela Duncan (553 rush yds, 4 TD), Josh Snead (496 rush yds) and Juwan Thompson (352 rush yds). The defense, which allowed 49.2 PPG during an 0-5 finish to 2012, still needs a ton of work, especially the makeshift secondary. 2010 Freshman All-American LB Kelby Brown (ACL) should be healthy to join standout DE Kenny Anunike (5 sacks) and CB Ross Cockrell (5 INT).
N CAROLINA: The Heels put up 40.6 PPG (8th in FBS) in Larry Fedora's sped-up spread offense last year, but they have a big hole to fill with ACC top rusher Giovani Bernard gone. RBs A.J. Blue (433 rush yds, 9 TD) and Romar Morris (386 rush yds, 5.6 YPC) expect to get the bulk of carries. Underrated senior QB Bryn Renner (3,356 pass yds, 28 TD, 7 INT) is back though, as are his two favorite targets, WR Quinshad Davis (776 rec. yds, 5 TD) and TE Eric Ebron (625 rec. yds, 4 TD). The stout O-Line allowed just 11 sacks (T-9th in FBS), but lost three starters. The 4-2-5 defense gave up 32.9 PPG in conference play, and said goodbye to its two best defenders in DT Sylvester Williams and LB Kevin Reddick. DE Kareem Martin (4 sacks) and S Tre Boston (86 tackles, 4 INT) are quality players, but this unit will remain below average.

*Duke-North Carolina Preview* =============================

No. 24 Duke (9-2) at North Carolina (6-5), 12:00 p.m. EDT

DURHAM, N.C. (AP) - No. 24 Duke is in the midst of one of the most successful seasons in program history. Just don't refer to the Blue Devils as one-year wonders.

The perennial losers are a victory against surging North Carolina on Saturday from setting a school record with 10 wins and earning a spot in the ACC championship game.

Players insist this season hasn't been a flash in the pan. Rather, it's the latest step forward in the construction of a consistent program.

"I'm confident in what coach (David Cutcliffe) has done here, and what we've done as a team, and it's (to) turn the program around to where now we expect to have winning seasons," linebacker Kelby Brown said Tuesday.

That's a bold statement for a program that, until now, hadn't finished above .500 since 1994.

Beat the Tar Heels (6-5, 4-3), and Duke (9-2, 5-2) will have the Coastal Division title all to itself and will face No. 2 Florida State in its first ACC title game.

Cutcliffe said before a 48-30 win over then-No. 24 Miami two weeks ago that winning 10 games would be "getting into the dream year" for Duke.

Now after beating Wake Forest 28-21 lat Saturday, the Blue Devils are one victory from making it a reality - but are keeping from getting too caught up in it.

"The mood in the locker room is happy and up-spirited because we've never been in this position," receiver Jamison Crowder said. "At the same time, the coaches are doing a good job managing our spirits and everything, not to get too high, and go out and play and enjoy the moment and realize that things can go backwards.

"Enjoy the moment," he added, "but don't get too overjoyed."

They've come a long way from the hapless bunch that from 1996-2007 had four winless seasons and two years with one win. They've been a perennial preseason last-place pick in the Coastal - even this year.

Duke's seven-game winning streak is its longest since a seven-game run in 1994, also the last time the Blue Devils appeared in the national rankings.

"This is why we came here," Brown said. "We came here to build this program up. I fully believe that's exactly what we're doing."

Even during those numerous down seasons, they always received one courtesy vote in the coaches' preseason poll from South Carolina's Steve Spurrier, whose first head coaching job was at Duke from 1987-89.

"That's where I learned whatever I learned," Spurrier said. "I always pull for those guys. Always."

Naturally, with so much still on the line this year, the Blue Devils' focus is on the present.

But there are indications that they also could contend in 2014, too.

"I think now that the program is off and rolling now," Crowder said.

Only four players on the offensive depth chart are seniors. Both quarterbacks will be back, and so will three of the four running backs and every receiver but one - including Crowder. Brown will return to lead the linebackers, and eight of the 10 defensive backs on the two-deep are either freshmen or sophomores.

"It's not like now that we won nine games, that every season's going to be easy and we're going to roll over people," Brown said. "We're going to have to repeat this every year. It's a lot of work. I think guys know that, and hopefully young guys who weren't a part of losing seasons don't feel like it comes easy, because it really doesn't."

North Carolina has won five in a row to become bowl eligible, its longest win streak since 2001, and is coming off a record-setting performance.

The Tar Heels beat Old Dominion 80-20 last Saturday, setting school records for points and touchdowns by the midpoint of the third quarter, and quarterback Marquise Williams set the single-game record for total yards on the Tar Heels' fourth snap of the second half.

Williams finished 20 of 27 for 409 yards and rushed for 60 more, helping North Carolina to a school-record 721 yards. Williams tied the UNC mark with five passing touchdowns and was third in single-game total yards by halftime.

The point total was the second-most in ACC history, surpassed only by Clemson's 82 in 1981 against Wake Forest.

This will be the 100th meeting between these schools, and the Blue Devils ended an eight-game losing streak against the Tar Heels with a 33-30 home win last Oct. 20. North Carolina leads the all-time series 58-37-4.
