| BYU: BYU ran an efficient offense last season, especially down the stretch where it put up 38.7 PPG in the final seven games. The Cougars get back a lot of familiar faces. QB Riley Nelson (1,717 pass yds, 19 TD) won his job back in 2011 and led his team to a 6-1 record as a starter. Nelson will also have back his No. 1 receiver, Cody Hoffman (943 rec yds, 10 TD), and three of his top four running backs from last season to hopefully run more effectively behind a strong O-line. On the defensive end, the Cougars have big defensive linemen who can stop the run, as well as linebackers who can get after the quarterback and make tackles in the open field. The secondary, however, has questions going into 2012 with the loss of its two top performers, Travis Uale and Corby Eason. | | SAN JOSE ST: San Jose State is having an interesting offseason. It appears its quarterback job will go to junior college transfer David Fales, who impressed in the spring game (16-for-22, 257 yds). RB David Freeman is back from injury and will move back into the starting lineup, but he'll be running behind an unreliable offensive line. The receivers will be the strength of the offense, namely Noel Grigsby (886 rec yds) and Chandler Jones (566 rec yds). Defensively, the Spartans will bring back top pass rusher DE Travis Johnson (9.5 sacks). The front four should be dominant, but they must get better in the secondary and receive more consistent play out of a promising group of linebackers led by top tackler LB Keith Smith (104 tackles). |
