KEY GAME INFORMATION
VIRGINIA TECH: Last season: 21-12, lost in first round of NCAA Tournament
Nickname: Hokies
Coach: Buzz Williams, fifth season
Conference: Atlantic Coast.
Who's gone: G Justin Bibbs (13.3 ppg. Led the team with 66 3s), G Devin Wilson, their best defensive player
Who's back: G Justin Robinson (14 ppg, 185 assists) is a speedy 6-foot-2 guard who can take over a game (he had 32 points in a victory against NC State last year). F Kerry Blackshear Jr. (12.5 ppg, 5.9 rpg), who can be hard to stop when not in foul trouble. G Nickeil Alexander-Walker (10.7 ppg, 58 3s), who showed maturity beyond his years as a freshman. G Ahmed Hill (10.6 ppg, 64 3s), who shot 41 percent from deep. G/F Chris Clarke (8.2 ppg, team-best 6.3 rpg) whose speed can be an asset, but also a liability (75 turnovers). F P.J. Horne, who shot 59 percent from the field and showed flashes of being a spark off the bench.
Who's new: G Ty Outlaw, who shot 48.7 percent from 3-point range in 2016-17 before missing last season with a torn ACL.
The Skinny: The Hokies have thrived in an us-against-the-world approach in Williams' first four seasons, winning two ACC games their first season and 10 each of the past three years. With prospects for a third consecutive NCAA Tournament bid for the first time in school history, how they handle being on the expectations side of the ledger will go a long way toward determining how successful they can be.
Expectations: At No. 15, the Hokies are ranked as high as they ever been to start a season, and they are picked fifth in the ACC after much more dire prognostications in previous seasons. With eight experienced players returning, Williams also has more experience than he's had during his tenure in Blacksburg. A quick return to form of Ty Outlaw after missing last season with a torn ACL would help their prospects immensely.
PITTSBURGH: Last season: 8-24, winless in Atlantic Coast Conference play (0-18).
Nickname: Panthers.
Coach: Jeff Capel.
Conference: ACC.
Who's gone: Head coach Kevin Stallings, forward Ryan Luther, guard Marcus Carr (transfer to Minnesota), guard Parker Stewart (transfer to Tennessee-Martin), guard Jonathan Milligan.
Who's back: Swingman Jared Wilson-Frame was the best player on a bad team last season, averaging 13.0 points and 3.5 rebounds. He dropped 25 pounds from his 6-foot-5 frame which should make it easier for him to get up the floor for Capel, who wants the Panthers to run. Guard Shamiel Stevenson averaged 8.5 points and 4.4 rebounds and has an intriguing all-around game. Forwards Kene Chukwuka and Terrell Brown are the best of the returning bigs.
Who's new: Guard Malik Ellison watched last season from the bench while sitting out a year due to NCAA transfer rules after coming over from St. John's. He averaged 7.4 points in two seasons for the Red Storm. Guard Sidy N'Dir comes over as a graduate transfer from New Mexico State, where he was a contributor on a team that reached the NCAA Tournament each of the last two years. The Panthers also welcome freshmen guards Xavier Johnson, Trey McGowens and Au'Diese Toney and Curtis Aiken Jr.
The Skinny: There is nowhere to go but up for the Panthers, who went into a tailspin following longtime coach Jamie Dixon's surprise departure in the spring of 2016. Capel's arrival brings a needed jolt of energy, though it will take time for that energy to translate into a return to serious contention in the nation's toughest confernce.
Expectations: None, at least according to Las Vegas. Oddsmakers have the Panthers at 5,000-1 to win the NCAA championship ... the same as cross-town rival Duquesne, which hasn't made the NCAA Tournament in 1977. More realistic, winning a handful of games in the ACC.
PREVIEW
No. 22 Virginia Tech not overlooking Pitt

His team may be going against an opponent that has dropped its last eight games, but Virginia Tech coach Buzz Williams called the No. 22 Hokies' Saturday afternoon clash with the Panthers in Pittsburgh "as big a game that we've had since we've lived here."

Williams gave that assessment in a post-game radio interview following the Hokies' 76-68 victory over Georgia Tech on Wednesday in what was likely their best all-around performance since losing senior guard Justin Robinson to a foot injury last month.

Virginia Tech (19-5, 8-4 ACC) shot 47.2 percent from the field overall, went 13 of 30 (43.3 percent) on 3-pointers and had 20 assists on 25 made baskets against Georgia Tech's zone defense.

It's now important to back that up with a similar effort against the struggling Panthers (12-13, 2-10).

"To an extent with each passing day, I think we're figuring out the specific recipe to what gives us a chance," Williams said. "It's so specific that when the ingredients or the directions for the recipe are not followed to the recipe exactly, the wheels are going to fall off."

"Wheels falling off" is a pretty good way to describe what happened to the Hokies when Robinson, their all-time career assist leader and the team's No. 2 scorer (14.4 points per game), was hurt in their win at Miami on Jan. 30.

Despite a season-low scoring effort, they won their first game in Robinson's absence with a 47-24 victory over North Carolina State, but lost their next two outings at home to Louisville (their first home setback this season) and at Clemson.

In those three losses, Virginia Tech shot an atypical 35.7 percent from the field, including a season-low 28.3 against Clemson. The performance against the Yellow Jackets was more like how the Hokies had played when they rose to No. 9 in the rankings after a 14-1 start.

"We played more like us," Virginia Tech forward Kerry Blackshear told the Roanoke Times. "Penetrate. If you got it, get yours. If you don't have it, find the other man."

Ty Outlaw scored a season-high 20 points against the Jackets and, just as important, showed the kind of leadership the Hokies will need down the stretch with games against Virginia and Duke among the last five outings after the visit to Pittsburgh.

"He's smart enough, he's aware enough to understand what's at stake," Williams said of the graduate transfer guard.

Sophomore guard Nickeil Alexander-Walker (team-high 17.3 points per game) scored 16 against Georgia Tech.

First-year Pittsburgh coach Jeff Capel III is looking for someone to step up among his Panthers, who notched wins over Louisville and then-No. 11 Florida State in early conference play before hitting the skids.

"There just has to be ownership," Capel told the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette. "There has to be a voice within the group. There has to be a voice within the team. When you have a good program, then it becomes a collective voice. It's not just one person."

Youth is an issue. A pair of freshman guards, Xavier Johnson (16.6 points per game) and Trey McGowens (12.2) lead the Panthers in scoring, with senior guard/forward Jared Wilson-Frame next at 12. A third freshman guard, Au'Diese Toney (8.3), is the team's No. 4 scorer and leading rebounder (5.8).

Despite the losses piling up, Pitt has remained competitive. None of the eight losses have been by more than 15 points, and two of the last three were decided by five combined points, including a two-point overtime loss to Wake Forest.

Saturday will be the Panthers' only meeting with the Hokies this year.
