KEY GAME INFORMATION
TENNESSEE: Last season: 26-9, lost 63-62 to Loyola-Chicago in second round of NCAA Tournament
Nickname: Volunteers
Coach: Rick Barnes
Conference: Southeastern
Who's gone: Guards James Daniel (exhausted eligibility) and Chris Darrington (transferred to Toledo)
Who's back: Forward Grant Williams returns for his junior season after being selected by coaches as the 2018 SEC player of the year. He averaged 15.2 points and 6 rebounds last season. Forward Admiral Schofield, a second-team all-SEC selection last year with 13.9 points and 6.4 rebounds per game, worked out with NBA teams during the pre-draft process but decided to come back for his senior season. Junior guards Lamonte' Turner (10.9 points per game last year), Jordan Bowden (9.1) and Jordan Bone (7.3) also return. Bowden and Bone combined for 68 starts last year. Turner was Tennessee's third-leading scorer while coming off the bench. Kyle Alexander, a 6-foot-11 senior, led the Vols in offensive rebounds (85) and blocks (57) last season.
Who's new: Freshman D.J. Burns was rated as the nation's No. 108 prospect in his class according to composite rankings of recruiting sites compiled by 247Sports. The 6-9 forward had over 1,000 points and 1,000 rebounds at York Preparatory Academy in Rock Hill, South Carolina.
The Skinny: Tennessee returns its top six scorers from last year and heads into the season as one of the nation's most experienced teams. That explains why Tennessee is sixth in the Top 25, its highest preseason ranking ever.
Expectations: Las Vegas oddsmakers give Tennessee a 22-1 shot to win the national title, even though the Vols have never reached a Final Four. The only teams with better odds are Duke, Kentucky, Gonzaga, Kansas, North Carolina, Villanova, Nevada and Virginia. The SEC preseason media poll has Tennessee finishing second in the league, behind only Kentucky.
KENTUCKY: Last season: 26-11, won the SEC Tournament title and reached NCAA Sweet 16.
Nickname: Wildcats.
Coach: John Calipari.
Conference: Southeastern.
Who's gone: Forward Kevin Knox and guard Shai Gilgeous-Alexander became NBA lottery selections. Guard Hamidou Diallo and forward Jarred Vanderbilt were also drafted.
Who's back: Forward PJ Washington withdrew from the NBA Draft and is the top returning scorer and rebounder at 10.8 points and 5.7 rebounds per game respectively. Six-foot-11 Nick Richards and guard Quade Green (9.3 points) returned for their sophomore seasons, giving the Wildcats some experience. Guard Jemarl Baker is healthy after redshirting last year with injury.
Who's new: 6-8 forward Reid Travis is a graduate transfer from Stanford who was a two-time All-Pacific 12 Conference first team selection. Kentucky's latest group of blue chip recruits include forward E.J. Montgomery and guards Ashton Hagans, Keldon Johnson, Immanuel Quickley and Tyler Herro.
The Skinny: The mix of returnees Washington, Green and Richards with another heralded freshman class led by Johnson and Montgomery recalls the deep and talented 2014-15 team that won its first 38 games. Calipari won't go there on the expectations, but he loves the depth of his 10th Wildcats squad.
Expectations: Oddsmakers have made the Wildcats the 11/2 second choice behind Duke (5-1) to win the national championship. They have the potential to surpass last year's tournament run and pursue that ninth NCAA title.
PREVIEW
No. 1 Tennessee's gauntlet begins Saturday at No. 5 Kentucky

Tennessee is No. 1 and on a school-record 19-game winning streak.

It only gets harder from here.

The Volunteers (23-1, 11-0 SEC) will visit No. 5 Kentucky (20-4, 9-2) in Lexington on Saturday, the first of two meetings against the Wildcats in a two-week span. In the middle of that, on Feb. 23 on the road, will be the regular-season's only game against No. 19 LSU.

"I don't really watch other teams that much, but I will say that every time I have seen Kentucky, the biggest thing I think is that Coach Cal (John Calipari) has done a great job this year with just the camaraderie," said Tennessee senior Admiral Schofield.

"He's always had talent, and they are a very talented team this year. PJ Washington is playing great basketball right now, SEC Player of the Year-type level. To see his leadership on the team and how they interact with each other ... in the past, they really haven't had camaraderie like that, except for on certain teams like the national championship teams when they had Devin Booker and those guys."

Tennessee has someone playing at an SEC Player of the Year level, too. Junior forward Grant Williams, who won the award last season, is averaging 19.4 points and 7.4 rebounds, while shooting 57.9 percent from the field, all well above his marks from last year.

He scored only eight in an 85-73 win over South Carolina on Wednesday night, but the Vols showed off the depth and versatility that make them the top scoring team in the SEC at 85.4 points per game. Five of Williams' teammates scored in double figures against the Gamecocks, led by Schofield with 21.

Tennessee won both regular-season meetings against Kentucky last season, but the Wildcats gained revenge with a victory in the title game of the SEC tournament. Heightening the hype and intrigue for Saturday's SEC showdown between potential No. 1 seeds in the NCAA tourney is how Kentucky's last game ended.

The Wildcats fell 73-71 at home to LSU on Tuesday on a controversial tip-in by Kavell Bigby-Williams, ending UK's 10-game winning streak.

"This game and this week is the toughest week of the season for us," Calipari said after the game. "These are the two games that are the tough ones."

It was a painful loss that Kentucky hopes to convert to motivation.

"I know it will," Washington told the Lexington Herald-Leader. "We felt like we should have won that game, and we didn't make the plays to win that game at the end of the game. We're looking to bounce back Saturday."

Washington, a sophomore forward, is averaging team-highs in scoring (14.4) and rebounding (8.1). Freshman guard Keldon Johnson is scoring 14.0 points per game.

Washington has scored 20-plus points in six of the past seven games. He scored a total of 22 in the three games against the Volunteers last season.

"I think we all realize that every game is important this time of the year," said Tennessee coach Rick Barnes. "Regardless of the rankings, I think we are all concerned about seeing how well we can play. Going back to their last game, we are going to have to put a rule in to help referees at the end of the game."
