KEY GAME INFORMATION
SYRACUSE: Last season: 23-14, lost in the Sweet 16 of NCAA Tournament
Nickname: Orange
Coach: Jim Boeheim, 43rd season
Conference: Atlantic Coast
Who's gone: F Matthew Moyer transferred after his redshirt freshman year and graduate transfer G Geno Thorpe left the team after six games.
Who's back: G Tyus Battle, the team's leading scorer last season (19.2), decided to return for his junior year after testing his NBA chances. He'll be joined by sophomore F Oshae Brissett, who's coming off an impressive freshman season (14.9 points, 8.8 rebounds, 38 minutes), senior G Frank Howard (14.4 points, 4.7 assists), sophomore F Marek Dolezaj (5.8 points, 4.8 rebounds), and C Paschal Chukwu (5.4 points, 6.8 rebounds, 91 blocks). Also returning are: G Howard Washington, who's recovering from a torn ACL; F Bourama Sidibe, who had offseason surgery for tendinitis; and G/F Elijah Hughes, who had to sit last year after transferring from East Carolina.
Who's new: Boeheim welcomes a class that includes G Jalen Carey, F Robert Braswell, and Boeheim's youngest son, Buddy, a 6-foot-5 point guard who will wear No. 35, the same number his dad wore when he played for the Orange in the 1960s.
The Skinny: Last year Syracuse was picked in the preseason to finish 10th and pretty much lived up to the low expectations as injuries plagued a team that finished 8-10 in the ACC. But unlike the year before when Syracuse was the top seed in the NIT, meaning the Orange were the last team out of the NCAA Tournament, they managed to squeak in last March as the last team in and won three games to reach the Sweet 16, stunning Arizona State, TCU and Michigan State in low-scoring games before losing to Duke by just 4 points. This year's team is ranked 16th in the preseason poll, has the personnel to vie for a top spot in the ACC and, for a change, easily secure an NCAA Tournament bid.
Expectations: Las Vegas oddsmakers have Syracuse a long shot to win the NCAA Tournament, on par with Purdue and well behind ACC rival Duke and Kentucky, the top two favorites. ___
OREGON: Last season: 23-13, eliminated in the second round of the NIT.
Nickname: Ducks.
Coach: Dana Altman.
Conference: Pac-12.
Who's gone: G Elijah Brown, F MiKyle McIntosh and F Troy Brown Jr.
Who's back: Point guard Payton Pritchard enters his junior year as the team's top returning scorer with an average 14.5 points and 4.8 assists per game. Also back is fellow starter Paul White, a senior who averaged 9.4 points and 3.5 rebounds last season. Forward Kenny Wooten led the Pac-12 as a freshman last season with 2.6 blocks per game. Wooten was one of two freshmen to play in every game last season, joining Victor Bailey Jr.
Who's new: All eyes will be on 7-foot-2 center Bol Bol, the son of the late NBA star Manute Bol. He was considered a five-star prospect and the best prep recruit at center. He averaged 19.7 points and 7.6 rebounds for Findlay Prep in Nevada his senior season. Bol is expected to be a one-and-done for the Ducks. He's joined by fellow five-star recruit Louis King, who will miss the start of the season after he tore his meniscus during his senior season in Jersey City, New Jersey. The 6-foot-9 forward is expected to be back sometime around Dec. 1.
The Skinny: After going to the Final Four in the 2016-17 season, the Ducks faltered a bit last season and settled for an NIT appearance. The Ducks will have some obvious offensive power with Pritchard, so coach Dana Altman is emphasizing defense going into this season. Meanwhile, the Ducks will get plenty of attention because of Bol Bol.
Expectations: Las Vegas oddsmakers have the Ducks with a 1-in-25 shot to win the NCAA Tournament. But the Ducks were voted as the preseason favorite to win the Pac-12 title by the media that cover the team, and Oregon is also the top-ranked conference team in the AP Top 25.
PREVIEW
No. 13 Oregon, No. 15 Syracuse meet in unusual situation

When the 2K Empire bracket was released, it was widely expected that No. 13 Oregon and No. 15 Syracuse were going to face off in the championship game.

Come Friday, the nationally ranked teams will play each other, but not in the championship. Instead, the Ducks and Orange will tipoff in the consolation game at 4:30 p.m. ET after both being upset Thursday evening.

"We got to jump back right away," Oregon coach Dana Altman said after the loss to Iowa. "We got to go back, regroup a little bit and really get ready to go."

Oregon was outplayed in all facets in its 77-69 loss to Iowa. Ehab Amin led the Ducks with 25 points (5-of-8 from deep) while Victor Bailey Jr. added 12 points off the bench.

"A disappointing effort ... our ball movement was bad," Oregon head coach Dana Altman said. "We didn't penetrate and look to make shots for our teammates."

Freshman sensation Bol Bol didn't fit the billing, finishing with 14 points, five rebounds and four blocks, often being pushed out of the way and showing no real interest in the game.

The Ducks got as close as 28-24 in the first half but an 11-0 Iowa run saw Oregon trailing 39-28 in at the half. Oregon tried to rally in the second half, but the Ducks missed too many point-blank shots and never really threatening the Hawkeyes en route to the loss.

It was an off-shooting night for the Ducks, who were held to 37.1 percent from the field and were 6 for 18 from beyond the arc.

Likewise, Syracuse was defeated 83-76 by UConn and first-year coach Dan Hurley. Jalen Carey led the Orangemen with 26 points and seven rebounds while Tyus Battle finished with 16 points and Elijah Hughes added 15.

Syracuse coach Jim Boeheim was very complimentary of UConn postgame, but lamented about his team's poor offensive performance.

"We didn't play very smart on offense and scored (76) points," Boeheim said. "We've just got to be better on offense. Movement wasn't good. We have to get into things. We haven't been good offensively for all the game that we've played and we're trying to work guys out of position. We're not in sync (on) offense at all."

The Orangemen were bothered by UConn's pressure, turning the ball over and never getting into a solid offensive rhythm. Much like Oregon, Syracuse was able to get the game somewhat close but each time, the Huskies responded, never feeling threatened one the way to the win.

"We weren't in any way, shape or form good on the offensive end," Boeheim said. "We got crushed on the boards ... we got crushed inside."

Syracuse shot 39.4 percent from the field and was 6 for 22 from the 3-point line.

Oregon and Syracuse's matchup should be an exciting one as both squads are led by talented backcourts that make their respective teams run.

For Syracuse, Carey and Battle are not only the main offensive options, their spots at the top of Boeheim's 2-3 zone are imperative for a fast-flowing game. If they can get deflections, it allows the Orangemen to get into the open court and run.

That could bode well for Oregon, because Amin and point guard Payton Pritchard are the catalysts for the Ducks. They're at their best when Pritchard and Amin can push the pace and attack the rim, either finishing, getting to the free throw line or kicking out to the open player.

More importantly for the Ducks will be Pritchard and forward Paul White, the only real veteran players Oregon has. They have a lot to make up for as they combined for 12 points on 4-of-22 shooting against Iowa, a very poor performance for the leaders of the team.

"We just didn't compete tonight," Altman said. "We weren't ready to play and that was my fault -- very disappointed in myself, in the team."
