|
| | | ARIZONA ST: Last season: 15-18.
Who's gone: G Torian Graham, F Obinna Oleka, F Sam Cunliffe.
Who's back: G Tra Holder has matured into one of the conference's top floor leaders, a point guard who can facilitate or score. G Shannon Evans can score in bunches and knows Hurley's system well after following him from Buffalo. G Kodi Justice can do a little bit of everything, whether it's knocking down long 3s, bringing the crowd to its feet with a behind-the-back pass or guard 7-footers in the post. Big man Ramon Villa was steady as a backup last season and should give Hurley solid minutes again this year.
Who's new: Forwards Romello White and Vitaliy Shibel change Arizona State's frontcourt dynamic after sitting out last season. White, an academic redshirt a year ago, is active and tenacious. Shibel is athletic, can shoot from the perimeter and should be healthy after tearing his ACL last season. Junior college transfer De'Quon Lake is long and springy, top recruit Kimani Lawrence adds to frontcourt depth and former Ohio State forward Mickey Mitchell should have an impact after sitting out the first eight games due to transfer rules.
The Skinny: The Sun Devils should move toward the upper half of the Pac-12 after adding much-needed frontcourt depth to go with its trio of senior guards. A postseason bid, maybe even the NCAA Tournament, could be within the Sun Devils' reach if things fall right. | | OREGON ST: Last season: 5-27, including just one win in conference.
Who's gone: Forward Matt Dahlen and guard Daine Muller both decided to graduate with eligibility left.
Who's back: The Beavers return 10 players, including the starters for most of last season: guard Stephen Thompson Jr., forward Drew Eubanks, guard JaQuori McLaughlin, guard Kendal Manuel and forward Gligorije Rakocevic. Eubanks flirted with declaring himself eligible for the NBA draft but decided to return for his junior season. The Beavers will also see the return of forward Tres Tinkle, the coach's son, who missed most of last season with a broken wrist.
Who's new: Oregon State added six newcomers, including forward Seth Berger, a graduate transfer from Umass, and Ethan Thompson, Stephen's little brother. The younger Thompson could have an impact right away after averaging 22.8 points, 7.7 rebounds, and 5.4 assists as a senior last year at Bishop Montgomery in Torrance, California.
The Skinny: Oregon State hopes the injuries that plagued them last season are in the past, and they get to see the 2015 recruiting class of Eubanks, Tinkle and Thompson live up to their promise. The fact that there's not a lot of turnover on the team that played through last season's misfortune could lend itself to cohesiveness. The Beavers were selected to finish eighth in the Pac-12 preseason poll. |
