| | | BAYLOR: Point guard Kenny Chery (11.5 PPG, 4.7 APG, 2.6 RPG) stepped up in a big way last season in taking over this Baylor offense. He did a great job of playing under control and not turning the ball over with a 2.4 Ast/TO ratio. SF Royce O'Neale (7.1 PPG, 5.4 RPG, 2.9 APG) was not asked to do a lot of scoring last season, but the frontcourt is less crowded with the now-departed duo of Cory Jefferson and Isaiah Austin. With those guys gone, look for O'Neale to take his offensive game to another level. He averaged only 4.7 shots last year, but that number could double this season. PF Rico Gathers (6.4 PPG, 6.4 RPG) has a chance to be the top rebounder in the conference. He played only 17.8 MPG last season, and with that number potentially being 25-to-28 minutes, he could be in double figures every night. For the Bears to remain in the upper half of the Big 12, they will need big seasons from SF Taurean Prince (6.2 PPG, 2.8 RPG in 14.2 MPG) and swingman Ish Wainwright (1.9 PPG). | | IOWA ST: The Cyclones have continued to advance deeper in the NCAA Tournament under head coach Fred Hoiberg, and they reached the Sweet 16 last year before falling eventual champion UConn. PF Georges Niang (16.7 PPG, 4.5 RPG, 3.6 APG) is one of the most versatile players in college basketball. He will play the four-spot for Iowa State, but he will also bring the ball up the court, and even shoot it from the outside. He is coming off a broken foot suffered last season, but he is now fully healthy and capable of being the best player in the Big 12. PF Dustin Hogue (11.6 PPG, 8.4 RPG, 57% FG) does everything needed for the Cyclones, and is the leading returning rebounder in the Big 12. If he is able to expand his offensive game to the perimeter, then the Cyclones could have the most versatile frontcourt in the Big 12. Hoiberg has done a tremendous job of meshing returning veterans with incoming transfers, and he will look to do that once again. SG Bryce Dejean-Jones (UNLV) and PF Jameel McKay (Marquette) are two more transfers that will contribute immediately, but McKay is not eligible for the first nine games of the season. SG Naz Long (7.1 PPG, 40% threes) and heady PG Monte Morris (6.8 PPG, 3.7 APG and 2.6 RPG) will play a big role in how good the Cyclones can be this season. |

*Baylor-Iowa St. Preview* =========================
By NOEY KUPCHAN STATS Writer
Baylor (20-7) at Iowa State (20-6), 9:00 p.m. EDT
After a pair of impressive road efforts, Iowa State returns home with a chance to climb into a first-place tie in the Big 12.
Baylor snuck by the Cyclones last month, but another victory could be hard to come by Wednesday night.
Looking to stay unbeaten at home, No. 12 Iowa State tries to avenge that defeat against a 19th-ranked Bears team that's never won in Ames.
The Cyclones (20-6, 10-4) are seeking a fourth consecutive victory after winning 70-65 at then-No. 22 Oklahoma State last Wednesday and 85-77 at Texas on Saturday. Iowa State, which had dropped its previous four on the road, is one-half game behind Kansas for the conference lead with four to go.
"We've had a couple of good learning experiences on the road," coach Fred Hoiberg said. "I give our guys a lot of credit for fighting through the tough times, finding a way to handle adversity better. On the road, you splinter a little bit. At home, we can afford to do that, because the 15,000 (fans) behind you are going to bring you back together."
The fans have certainly done their job, helping cheer on Iowa State to its second 14-0 home start in three seasons. The Cyclones have compiled a 61-4 home record since 2011-12, winning their last 21 by an average of 15.2 points.
Facing the Bears at Hilton Coliseum could make all the difference after the Cyclones fell 74-73 in Waco on Jan. 14. Iowa State stormed back from 14 down with 8 1/2 minutes left, but guard Kenny Chery made the winning jumper with 4.7 seconds to go.
Iowa State has won all 12 games in the series at home.
"A lot of people are not realizing how big that loss was, that hurt," guard Naz Long said. "That's definitely a game that we want to get back at home. We know we have to basically win out in order to win this league, and I feel like we're right there. So this is a huge game."
The Cyclones are averaging a Big 12-leading 79.8 points and have six players averaging double figures. Sophomore Matt Thomas has recorded 5.2 points per game, but he could become another dangerous weapon after scoring a career-high 17 against the Longhorns.
"He's capable of being what everyone believes that he can be," Long said. "That's the next coming of coach. He can shoot it, I'm telling you. There was no surprise when he was doing that, it was more of a sigh of relief, like finally. Just so everyone can get a taste of it."
The Cyclones are also shooting a conference-best 48.6 percent and lead the league with 205 made 3-pointers.
"Iowa State is one of those teams when they're on, no one's going to beat them," Baylor coach Scott Drew said.
The Bears (20-7, 8-6) beat Kansas State 69-42 on Saturday, giving them at least 20 wins in seven of the last eight seasons. Five players scored in double figures for Baylor, which held the Wildcats to 1 of 16 from beyond the arc.
"I'm glad that we won 20 games, but we're on a mission to win the rest of our games for the rest of the regular season and stuff," Rico Gathers said after recording his league-leading 14th double-double with 13 points and 10 rebounds. "We stay hungry all the time. We know we've got tests coming up. We're locked and ready to go."
The Bears have split eight games against Top 25 teams - all in conference action - but only one of those victories came away from home. They are 2-10 in their last 12 road contests against ranked opponents.
