| ALABAMA: Last season: 18-15, lost in first round of the NIT.
Nickname: Crimson Tide.
Coach: Avery Johnson.
Conference: SEC.
Who's gone: G Retin Obasohan, G Arthur Edwards.
Who's back: Shannon Hale. Junior forward is the top returning scorer after averaging 10.8 points in less than 25 minutes per game; G Dazon Ingram Is back after his freshman season ended early with a broken left foot; F Jimmie Taylor led team in blocked shots.
Who's new: G/F Nick King. Former top recruit who played two seasons at Memphis. G Ar'Mond Davis. One of top junior college recruits and strong outside shooter.
The Skinny: Alabama hasn't made it to the NCAA Tournament since 2012. Should be better on the boards with addition of graduate transfer Bola Olaniyan and Ingram's return, but must replace team's leading scorer in Obasohan. | | TEXAS A&M: Last season: 28-9, lost in NCAA round of 16.
Nickname: Aggies.
Coach: Billy Kennedy.
Conference: Southeastern Conference.
Who's gone: G Alex Caruso, G Anthony Collins, G Danuel House, F Jalen Jones
Who's back: C Tyler Davis. Sophomore center is Texas A&M's only returning starter after averaging 11.3 points and 6.2 rebounds a game last season; F D.J. Hogg. Appeared in 37 games as a freshman last year with three starts and averaged 6.2 points and 2.9 rebounds; G Admon Gilder. Will need to make a leap this season after seeing significant playing time as a freshman last year when he averaged seven points and 1.4 assists.
Who's new: G J.J. Caldwell. Freshman was rated as a top 100 recruit by ESPN and several other recruiting services ranked him as one of the top point guards in the nation. F Robert Williams. Freshman was rated as best player in Louisiana last season; G J.C. Hampton. Graduate transfer could be an important addition to young team after starting 92 games in three seasons for Lipscomb.
The Skinny: If the Aggies hope to build on their success from last season they'll need a big year from Davis, who was selected to the SEC first team by the media, and some of their young guards will have to step up to make up for the loss of four starters. |
