| UTEP: Mike Price's retirement opened the door for Sean Kugler, the former UTEP player and coach who was the Steelers O-Line coach for the past three years. Kugler will run mostly a two-back set to get a lead blocker for RB Nathan Jeffery (897 rush yds, 7 TD) who was slowed by a hamstring injury last year. Texas A&M transfer QB Jameill Showers (7.3 YPA, 2 TD, 1 INT career) will likely beat out Blaire Sullivan (9.1 YPA, 2 TD, 1 INT career) for the starting job. WR Jordan Leslie (973 rec. yds, 6 TD) is the No. 1 target. The poor defense (440 YPG, 93rd in FBS) still needs work, but a solid nucleus exists with DE Horace Miller (6 sacks), DT Germard Reed (7 TFL), LB A.J. Ropati (58 tackles) and star S Richard Spencer back from a knee injury. | | TULANE: Tulane's offense was dreadful during its 2-10 season with 320 YPG (112th in FBS), and second-year coach Curtis Johnson now needs to pick a starter between QBs Devin Powell (4.5 YPA, 1 TD, 3 INT) and JUCO Nick Montana, son of Joe Montana. But there is no tough decision in the backfield with RB Orleans Darkwa (2,090 rush yds, 27 TD career) the only option for a hideous ground game (40 YPG on 1.7 YPC). WR Ryan Grant (1,149 rec. yds, 6 TD) could be C-USA's best receiver. The nation's 7th-worst defense (483 YPG) has a boatload of experience returning. CB Lorenzo Doss (5 INT) and S Darion Monroe (96 tackles) lead a talented secondary, and seniors DE Julius Warmsley (3 sacks) and LB Dominique Robertson (23 solo tackles) starred in the spring. K Cairo Santos (21-for-21 FG) won the 2012 Lou Groza Award. |
