| UCLA: The Bruins start in a new direction with head coach Jim Mora Jr. stepping in for Rick Neuheisel. Mora brings NFL head coaching experience to a program that has struggled over the last decade. He will have to pick a QB out of a group of three that includes last year's starter Kevin Prince (1,828 pass yds, 12 TD, 8 INT), Brett Hundley and Richard Brehaut (948 pass yds, 6 TD, 1 INT). Hundley has the most upside of the trio, and that could win him the job with his new coach. UCLA will likely try to pound the football after ranking third in the Pac-12 in rushing last year (178 rush YPG), giving the ball mostly to senior Johnathan Franklin (976 rush yds, 5 TD). Defensively, the Bruins return seven starters. If the incoming recruiting class (ranked 12th in the nation) can provide some instant contributors, UCLA will be a team on the rise. | | STANFORD: The Cardinal were fortunate to have QB Andrew Luck last season, but now reality sets in. Stanford will need to choose between Brett Nottingham and Josh Nunes for the starting job, and neither will be asked to do too much. RB Stepfan Taylor (1,330 rush yds, 10 TD) will be featured heavily in an offense with a good offensive line and a great playbook. Taylor carried the football 35 times in the Fiesta Bowl loss to Oklahoma State, racking up 177 yards and two touchdowns. Defensively, this team has one of the best front sevens in college football, and the Cardinal's physicality in the trenches will make them tough to move the ball against, especially on the ground, where they ranked third in the nation with 84 rush YPG allowed. |
