His running behind a fierce O-Line will take pressure off QB Joel Stave (7.4 YPA, 22 TD, 13 INT) or dual-threat QB Tanner McEvoy. Whoever wins the job will not have an experienced receiver to target. All front-seven starters are gone, including All- American LB Chris Borland, whose spot will be filled by LB Derek Landisch (33 tackles). Freshman DE Alec James is the team's best pass rusher. The secondary returns three starters, the best being CB Sojourn Shelton (4 INT). | | NORTHWESTERN: After a 4-0 start in 2013, Northwestern lost seven straight before its lone Big Ten win over Illinois. The offense could throw more with QB Trevor Siemian (7.2 YPA, 11 TD, 9 INT) under center with returning WRs Christian Jones (668 rec yds) and Tony Jones (630 rec yds). RB Venric Mark (1,366 rush yds, 12 TD in 2012) is back healthy, but his O-Line is green. No. 19 Wisconsin (3-1) at Northwestern (2-2), 3:30 p.m. EDT
Another slow start could doom Wisconsin this time, but the defense looks more than capable of bailing its teammates out again.
In search of a complete offensive performance in their Big Ten opener, the No. 17 Badgers look to push their winning streak to four Saturday against Northwestern with a rare victory in Evanston.
Wisconsin has won three straight since opening the season with a 28-24 loss to then-No. 13 LSU on Aug 30. However, the Badgers were plagued by incredibly slow starts in two of their victories, leading Western Illinois 9-3 at halftime the next week before pulling away for a 37-3 victory.
That was the story again last weekend, as Wisconsin and South Florida exchanged first-half field goals before the Badgers went on to win 27-10.
A similar effort could be costly since Northwestern (2-2, 1-0) has allowed 13 points, forced six turnovers and recorded eight sacks the last two weeks after opening conference play with a 29-6 rout at Penn State last Saturday.
"If we're going to win all the games we want to win, we're going to have to have an all-around performance from everyone from the start of the game to the finish of the game," Badgers quarterback Tanner McEvoy said.
Four of McEvoy's five touchdown passes have come after halftime, including a one-yard toss to tight end Sam Arneson with 5:17 to play last weekend.
"There's some opportunities to get Tanner involved in high-percentage throws hopefully early on, and that's something that we'll look at and we'll see," coach Gary Andersen said.
Much of the Badgers' offensive success has been keyed by the running game, which ranks third in the nation with an average of 343.3 yards behind Melvin Gordon.
Gordon is gaining 7.8 yards per carry and has scored nine touchdowns overall. He's reached the end zone seven times over the past two games, rushing 45 times for 434 yards.
Northwestern's defense has been stout against the run thus far. They Wildcats have held opponents to 2.9 yards per carry after limiting Penn State to 50 yards on 25 carries.
"Northwestern is a very good defense," Andersen said. "Longtime defensive coordinator who is very, very sound. Ton of respect the way they line up, the way they play, the techniques that they use in the front end, the techniques that they use in the back end. That's gone on for years."
The Badgers' defense, which allows a conference-low 14.5 points per game, has helped them overcome their slow starts. Wisconsin has allowed an average of 226.0 yards in its three victories and has let its four opponents convert just 26.9 percent of their third downs - 10th in the nation.
"If they can sustain that and maintain that for 12 regular-season games, they will be a special defense," Andersen said.
Still, it's the offense that will be under intense scrutiny as Wisconsin attempts to end a three-game slide at Ryan Field that dates to 1999. It had no issues when then-No. 19 Northwestern visited Madison last Oct. 12, however, racking up 527 yards with Gordon rushing for 172 and a score on 22 carries in a 35-6 win.
The Wildcats are looking for a three-game winning streak after limiting the Nittany Lions to 266 offensive yards, but that wasn't good enough for coach Pat Fitzgerald.
"Fifty-nine points to six sounds like a pretty good performance, and I think that's what we left out there," he said. "So we're a long way from being what we could be. A long way."
That may be the case for Trevor Siemian, who has two touchdown passes on the season and none in the past two games. He completed 21 of 37 for 258 yards and an interception against Penn State, though he scored three times on the ground from one yard out.
Siemian was sacked five times while converting 13 of 34 passes for 163 yards against Wisconsin last year, but Andersen thinks he's progressed since.
"His feeling and his command, understanding of the offense, has grown in a very positive way for offensive for Northwestern and for their offense unit," Andersen said. "He has no problem with looking to the right with an understanding what's going on out here in his mind, and turning right back and rifling the ball back into that area where his eyes haven't been very long."
Junior tight end Dan Vitale is emerging as Siemian's favorite target, catching 18 passes for 216 yards after grabbing seven for 113 last week.
