KEY GAME INFORMATION
WISCONSIN: Although Big Ten champion Wisconsin was 8-6, those defeats were by a total of 25 points. New coach Gary Andersen and new OC Andy Ludwig first have to pick a starter between sophomore QB Joel Stave (1,104 pass yds, 6 TD, 3 INT) and senior QB Curt Phillips (605 pass yds, 5 TD, 3 INT career). They also need to bolster their injury-plagued offensive line. RBs James White (806 rush yds, 12 TD) and RB Melvin Gordon (621 rush yds, 10.0 YPC) are a fierce 1-2 combo to replace Montee Ball. WR Jared Abbrederis (837 rec. yds, 5 TD) has all-conference talent, but the Badgers need more options in the receiving game. Wisconsin's sure-fire defense (323 YPG, 15th in FBS) will blitz more often under new DC Dave Aranda to help a young secondary. LB Chris Borland (104 tackles) leads a deep and versatile front seven with talented DE/OLB hybrids Brendan Kelly and Tyler Dippel (5 sacks each).
MINNESOTA: The Gophers began 4-0 last year, but finished 2-7, surpassing 17 points just twice in those final nine contests. QB Philip Nelson (5.7 YPA, 8 TD, 8 INT) made great strides as a freshman and now has a lock on the starting job. But none of his returning wideouts caught even 20 passes last year. That's a big reason why Minnesota will remain a run-first offense with RBs Donnell Kirkwood (926 rush yds, 6 TD) and Rodrick Williams (261 rush yds) rumbling behind a veteran O-Line. The strength of the defense lies in the back (187 passing YPG, 12th in FBS) with an athletic secondary led by CB Derrick Wells (74 tackles, 10 PD) and S Brock Vereen (64 tackles, 9 PD). The run defense struggled (172 YPG, 74th in FBS), but 300-pound DT Ra'Shede Hageman (6 sacks) draws enough double-teams to free up the pass rushers. JUCO LB Damien Wilson will likely shine brightest in a crew of unproven linebackers.

*Wisconsin-Minnesota Preview* =============================

No. 19 Wisconsin (8-2) at No. 25 Minnesota (8-2), 3:30 p.m. EDT

(AP) - In the midst of their longest winning streak in two seasons, defensive lineman Beau Allen and linebacker Chris Borland admit there hasn't been one moment that has defined the recent dominance of the Badgers' senior-laden defense. Basically all it took was a little time for all the pieces to come together.

Wisconsin has held six opponents to their lowest scoring output of the season. That mark included Saturday's 51-3 win over Indiana to give the program at least eight wins for the fifth straight season.

"Indiana averaged (over) 40 points per game and we gave up three," Allen said. "In our minds that's three too many. Hopefully that continues. The way we prepare and our offensive plan will allow us to do so."

The 16th-ranked Badgers will try to turn in a similar performance Saturday as they go for a sixth consecutive victory in a road matchup with Minnesota (8-2, 4-2 Big Ten), winner of four in a row.

Part of the success for Wisconsin (8-2, 5-1) has been the run defense; a scheme that was remade during the offseason with the transition to the 3-4 formation installed by first-year defensive coordinator Dave Aranda.

Although the change has required multiple position switches and a reconfiguration of the entire defensive line, Wisconsin has limited opponents to an average of 4.3 yards per play, the fifth-best average of any FBS defense, and 98.8 rushing yards per game - seventh nationally.

"We started off the season with a high ceiling, and I think we really have grown each week," Borland said. "That's the mark of a great team and a great defense is to improve weekly. Guys are improving by leaps and bounds both individually and as a unit."

The annual border battle with Minnesota will be a change of pace for Wisconsin's defense. After facing two of the four fastest-operating offenses in the FBS in consecutive weeks - BYU is No. 2 nationally at 19.2 seconds per play and Indiana is fourth at 19.5 - the Badgers' defense will adjust to the second-slowest FBS offense in Minnesota (30.6 seconds per play).

"You don't see the fast-break football, which will be a nice fresh breath of air for maybe both teams as you sit and look at it," Wisconsin coach Gary Andersen said. "They want to establish the run game. They want to run the ball. They want to be productive in the run game."

To do that, the Gophers incorporate one of Wisconsin's favorite weapons - the fly and jet sweep. It was a major weapon for Wisconsin last week, as wide receiver Jared Abbrederis scored on a 32-yard and 49-yard run, and will be a challenge considering few schools have attempted the UW's defense.

"They have elements of a pro-style offense," said Borland, who described Minnesota's offense as a combination of Wisconsin's and BYU's. "It requires you to realign quickly and keep your eyes on your keys. They do a lot of pre-snap stuff to get you out of position."

The rivalry between the schools has waned in recent years with Wisconsin taking nine straight to match the longest winning streak by either team in the series, but there's championship implications in the latest meeting in the season between the two schools since 2002.

Both have an outside chance to win their respective divisions. Wisconsin needs to win out and have No. 4 Ohio State lose its remaining two games (home vs. Indiana and at Michigan) to compete for a fourth straight conference championship.

Minnesota also needs to win out and have Michigan State lose at Northwestern this weekend (the Gophers travel to East Lansing for the regular season finale) to clinch a share of the Legends Division and play in the conference title game for the first time.

The Gophers have won four straight games, winning by an average of 8.0 points.

"They keep plowing through games and keep battling through there," Andersen said of Minnesota. "They expect themselves to make plays at the end to win. It's a well-rounded football team. You can see why they won the games that they won when they're closely dissected on film, which we're still in the process of doing."

The Gophers got 139 of their 195 rushing yards from David Cobb - he's averaged 142.0 on the ground during the winning streak - in a 24-10 home victory over Penn State on Nov. 9. Minnesota held the ball for more than 35 minutes for the fourth straight game and is eighth in the country in average time of possession at 33:23 - trailing third-place Wisconsin at 34:06.

The surprising Gophers are now hoping to play in a New Year's Day bowl - something that hasn't happened since they won the Rose Bowl in 1962.

"I didn't know if we could move quite this quick, but I think that's a credit to our staff and our players. On the inside - it's sometimes hard to see on the outside - we knew we were getting better," coach Jerry Kill said.
