KEY GAME INFORMATION
SMU: The Mustangs have a new playbook with QB Neal Burcham (5.1 YPA) replacing Garrett Gilbert. SMU's top two wideouts are also gone, so WR Der'rikk Thompson (459 rec yds) and LB-turned-RB Kevin Pope (5.2 YPC) are the top skill-position players. DE Beau Barnes (5 sacks, 13 TFL) and LB Stephon Sanders (86 tackles, 13.5 TFL) are the only two standouts on defense.
E CAROLINA: Star QB Shane Carden (4,139 pass yds, 71% completions, 33 TD, 10 INT) leads ECU in its first AAC season and will continue to provide mass targets for WR Justin Hardy (114 rec, 1,284 yds, 8 TD) in effort to post another 40.2 PPG like last year. Five-foot-8 RB Breon Allen (311 rush yds) will be the main back. The defense lost a ton, and will ask a lot out of DL Chrishon Rose (6 TFL), ILB Zeek Bigger (77 tackles, 5 PD) and CB Detric Allen (40 tackles).

*SMU-East Carolina Preview* ===========================

By JEFF BARTL STATS Senior Writer

SMU (0-4) at East Carolina (3-1), 12:00 p.m. EDT

East Carolina has burst onto the national scene with a pair of quality wins against Power 5 competition, but coach Ruffin McNeill has been focused on stressing the importance of the school's first American Athletic Conference contest - even if it's against a team that appears to be in complete disarray.

The 22nd-ranked Pirates return from their bye week Saturday to host a winless SMU squad that is down to its former fourth-string quarterback as it searches for some stability.

East Carolina (3-1) upset then-No. 17 Virginia Tech 28-21 on Sept. 13 on the road and followed that up with a dominating 70-41 home victory over North Carolina the next week while racking up a school-record 789 yards of offense.

The Pirates' lone blemish is a 33-23 loss at then-No. 21 South Carolina, a game in which they led midway through the second quarter and had chances to tie the score in the fourth.

This is East Carolina's first game as a ranked team since Sept. 27, 2008.

"I'm honored because it gives the nation the chance to see our players, and of course, our university," McNeill said. "It's recognition they've earned and deserve."

That doesn't mean he's satisfied. Despite the victories and national ranking, McNeill has his players thinking about the AAC schedule after East Carolina moved from Conference USA prior to this season.

"In our schedule, we find out what our strengths and weakness are quickly," McNeill said. "We approached the bye week as a chance to correct things on all three sides of the ball.

"We know (Saturday) is what it's about here. We know the rest of our season is focused on the American Conference."

While East Carolina is thriving, SMU (0-4) enters its conference schedule still struggling to recover after former coach June Jones resigned following the second game - an embarrassing 43-6 loss to North Texas on Sept. 6.

The Mustangs scored their only touchdown of the season on the final play of that contest, as Nate Halverson caught a 33-yard pass from Kolney Cassel. They were throttled 56-0 by TCU last week and have been outscored 202-12 while ranking last in the nation in both scoring offense and scoring defense.

"We can't keep going like this," interim coach Tom Mason said. "That's my job. We just have to believe in ourselves."

Garrett Krstich, who began the season as SMU's fourth-string quarterback, replaced Cassel in the second quarter of a 58-6 loss to sixth-ranked Texas A&M on Sept. 20 before going 14 for 30 for 142 yards and an interception against TCU.

Mason hasn't named a starter for this week, but Krstich is remaining confident that the Mustangs can turn their season around.

"We're going to keep working," Krstich said. "We still have eight games, and I have full confidence we can make it to a bowl game."

Rumors surfaced this week that SMU could possibly pursue former Texas coach Mack Brown, though there haven't been any official discussions regarding Brown's possible interest. For now, the Mustangs must concern themselves with stopping a powerful East Carolina offense with multiple weapons.

Shane Carden threw for 427 yards and three touchdowns against Virginia Tech before completing 30 of 48 for 438 yards and four scores against the Tar Heels.

Breon Allen set career highs with 18 rushes, 211 yards and two touchdowns against North Carolina. He's part of a strong running game that also features Marquez Grayson, Chris Hairston and Anthony Scott.

"Knowing that the guy behind you can play and perform just as well as you, it will push you," McNeill said. "The old way of having one guy tote the ball 40 times a game are gone. They can't do it because the body can't take it. The more guys you have, the better. Each guy presents a different skill set."

SMU won the last meeting 45-38 on Nov. 26, 2010, when both schools were members of Conference USA.
