KEY GAME INFORMATION
ARKANSAS: Bret Bielema's first year was predictably rough, but the pieces are there for a solid improvement in Year 2. Bielema's run-first offense will be led by RB Alex Collins (1,026 rush yds, 5.4 YPC), the second Razorback ever to hit 1,000 yards as a freshman, and RB Jonathan Williams (900 rush yds, 6.0 YPC). QB Brandon Allen (6.0 YPA, 13 TD, 10 INT) had a shaky first year as a starter but should improve, especially if his shoulder is fully healthy. Robb Smith is their fourth defensive coordinator in four years, and he inherits a group that will likely struggle. DE Trey Flowers (5 sacks, 13.5 TFL, 3 FF) is a bright spot and should lead a solid pass rush. The secondary is experienced with CBs Tevin Mitchel, Carroll Washington and Will Hines (11 PD combined), but short on talent. Linebacker also continues to be a trouble spot.
AUBURN: The Tigers lost their two best players in RB Tre Mason and OT Greg Robinson, but Gus Malzahn has more than enough talent to make up for it. QB Nick Marshall (1,976 pass yds, 1,068 rush yds, 26 total TD) is a rising superstar, and Malzahn plans on airing it out more this season. He has an outstanding top receiver in WR Sammie Coates (902 rec yds, 21.5 avg, 7 TD). They also have the talent to replace Mason between senior RBs Corey Grant (647 rush yds, 9.8 YPC, 6 TD) and Cameron Artis-Payne (610 rush yds, 6.7 YPC, 6 TD), and five-star recruit RB Roc Thomas. Defensively, DE Carl Lawson (4 sacks) is poised to take over for Dee Ford as Auburn's top pass-rushing threat after an impressive freshman season. LBs Cassanova McKinzy (75 tackles, 8 TFL) and Kris Frost (59 tackles, 6 TFL) lead a solid linebacking corps.

*Arkansas-Auburn Preview* =========================

Arkansas (0-0) at No. 2 Auburn (0-0), 4:00 p.m. EDT

(AP) - The theme around Auburn's football building since January has been about being "13 seconds better."

Just being better than '13 is a lofty enough goal.

It's been nearly eight months since the Tigers came within 13 seconds of a national championship after winning the SEC, and they'll begin what they hope will be a road back to the top of college football with Saturday's early conference visit from Arkansas.

This time, the Tigers won't be able to sneak up on anyone. Not after coming from 10 down in the fourth quarter at Texas A&M. Not after stunning Georgia and Alabama in November with miraculous plays Auburn fans may never forget.

And certainly not after largely outplaying undefeated juggernaut Florida State in the Rose Bowl before Jameis Winston's late TD to Kelvin Benjamin.

"This year we're going to be circled," said coach Gus Malzahn, who directed the biggest one-year turnaround in SEC history during his debut season. "We told our players that. We're going to have to be better in every phase, especially early in the season."

Shon Coleman replaces second overall NFL draft pick Greg Robinson at left tackle four years after being diagnosed with leukemia. The Tigers also must replace defensive end Dee Ford, another first-rounder, and Heisman Trophy finalist tailback Tre Mason.

Leading receiver Sammie Coates and leading tackler Cassanova McKinzy are back, as is dual-threat quarterback Nick Marshall, who along with Mason helped Auburn become the nation's No. 1 rushing offense.

It's unclear, though, how much time Marshall will see against the Razorbacks after being cited for marijuana possession over the summer. Malzahn on Tuesday confirmed that Jeremy Johnson would start at quarterback in the opener.

He had previously said Marshall and cornerback Jonathon Mincy, who also was arrested in June for possession, would not start.

The uncertainty isn't fazing Arkansas coach Bret Bielema.

"I don't know how long their quarterback's not going to be in there, but their second-string quarterback is a very good player," Bielema said Monday. "Who knows how long the second-string corner is going to be in there, and their second-string corner is a good player. Who knows if the safety's going to play.

"There's a lot of unknown things but what matters is the 11 guys who are going to suit up for Auburn are going to be well coached."

The 6-foot-5, 230-pound Johnson, Alabama's high school Mr. Football two years ago, started one nonconference game and played most of the way in another when Marshall was injured.

He was 29-of-41 passing for 422 yards and rushed seven times for 47 yards. Johnson threw for six touchdowns and was intercepted twice.

Malzahn said there's nothing in the offense that they're worried about Johnson handling. That would include the zone read that became Auburn's bread and butter last season with Marshall and Mason.

"He's a lot like Nick. He went through the season, learned the offense on the go," Malzahn said of Johnson. "Then we had a chance in the spring, gave him a lot of reps."

Arkansas turned it over three times in a 35-17 loss to Auburn in November, part of a disastrous 3-9 season that saw the Razorbacks drop their final nine games and go winless in the SEC.

That was hardly what Bielema had in mind in his first season in Fayetteville, but he's actually happy to open 2014 with a difficult test.

"I think it allows you to focus a little bit early on," Bielema said. "Now, at the time this was scheduled, they weren't the defending SEC champs and they didn't come within a hair of chinny-chin-chin of winning the national championship."

Bielema and Malzahn's careers have intersected since the day they were both hired into the SEC following the 2012 season - and not always because of on-the-field events. The two engaged in a bit of back and forth regarding player safety in an up-tempo offense prior to last season, and their opposite opinions were once again in the news this offseason thanks to a debate over whether to bar offenses from snapping the ball before 10 seconds had elapsed on the play clock.

"We're obviously two totally different kinds of people, probably, in certain regards," Bielema said. "But two very similar people when you look at the details of what we believe in."

While Malzahn will decide if and when to play Marshall on Saturday, Bielema figures to just be happy to have a healthy quarterback. Brandon Allen is good to go after battling a shoulder injury for most of last season, and Arkansas' passing game was the SEC's worst.

Allen's return to health has been one of many reasons Bielema expects improvement. Arkansas also has the talented running back trio of Jonathan Williams, Alex Collins and Korliss Marshall.

Allen's truck was involved in an early morning fire on Monday, an incident that's being investigated by police and fire officials as a potential case of arson.

Bielema, however, doesn't expect the incident to affect Allen's play this week.

"I think (Allen) would like to just thank all the people that reached out to him," Bielema said. "But other than that, I really don't see it being a big issue with him."

Arkansas has won three of its last four visits to Auburn.
