KEY GAME INFORMATION
ARIZONA: The Rich Rodriguez era got off to an 8-5 start, but the Wildcats surrendered 49.6 PPG in five defeats. The potent offense (526 YPG, 7th in FBS) has the nation's top rusher, RB Ka'Deem Carey (1,929 rush yds, 6.4 YPC, 23 TD), but the will sorely miss star WR Austin Hill (1,364 rec. yds) who tore his ACL in the spring. QBs B.J. Denker (259 pass yds, 3 TD, 1 INT) and JUCO Jesse Scroggins have so-so options in WRs David Richards (298 rec. yds, 3 TD) and Garic Wharton (264 rec. yds, 2 TD). The atrocious 3-3-5 defense (499 YPG, 3rd-worst in FBS) remains virtually intact. NT Tevin Hood (26 tackles) anchors a weak front four, but LBs Jake Fischer (119 tackles, 3 FF) and Marquis Flowers (5.5 sacks, 100 tackles) are reliable. DB Tra'Mayne Bondurant (74 tackles, 11.5 TFL) and CB Shaquille Richardson (14 PD) should improve.
ARIZONA ST: Todd Graham's first season with ASU was as unpredictable as his career path, starting 5-1, then losing four in row, then finishing with 49.7 PPG in three straight wins. Junior QB Taylor Kelly (3,039 pass yds, 29 TD, 9 INT) exceeded expectations without top-flight receivers. The 2013 group is young, but ultra-talented, especially JUCO WR Jaelen Strong. TE Chris Coyle (696 rec. yds, 5 TD) has great hands. The Sun Devils have two elite RBs in Marion Grice (679 rush yds, 6.6 YPC, 11 TD) and D.J. Foster (493 rush yds). ASU led the nation in TFL (9.0 per game), was 2nd in sacks (4.0 per game) and 3rd in pass defense (168 YPG). Pac-12 Defensive Player of the Year DT Will Sutton (13 sacks, 23.5 TFL, 63 tackles, 3 FF) and LB Carl Bradford (11.5 sacks, 20.5 TFL, 81 tackles, 3 FF) wreak havoc in opponents' backfields, really helping an average secondary, led by S Alden Darby (80 tackles, 3 INT).

*Arizona-Arizona St. Preview* =============================

Arizona (7-4) at No. 12 Arizona State (9-2), 9:30 p.m. EDT

TEMPE, Ariz. (AP) - Fist in the air, Todd Graham charged out onto the field to celebrate with his players, tears filling his eyes after Arizona State held off UCLA last Saturday to win the Pac-12 South Division.

Two days later, the Sun Devils' coach was much more subdued.

The victory in the Rose Bowl, that was over. It was a monumental achievement, No. 13 Arizona State's biggest win in years, certainly in two seasons with Graham running the show.

But there was no time to keep the celebration going. Not with rival Arizona up next Saturday night and the Wildcats coming off a rout of then-No. 5 Oregon.

So, other than handing out doughnuts in the morning to students standing in line to buy tickets to this contest, Graham was all business as he prepared for what he calls the biggest game on Arizona State's schedule.

"Very important game - The Game," Graham said Monday during his weekly news conference.

Arizona State set it up with what could be a program-defining victory.

Needing to beat UCLA to secure the Pac-12 South, the Sun Devils raced out to a 35-13 halftime lead and had to hold on as the Bruins mounted a furious rally. Arizona State dug in with two big defensive stands late in the game, keyed by a pair of sacks by Chris Young, and held on for the 38-33 victory - one that left Graham emotional afterward.

"I've been doing this for 28 years, and that's the most impressive display of heart by a football team I've ever seen," he said. "To watch these kids on that field lay it on the line with that kind of heart was just overwhelming to me."

Arizona State won the Territorial Cup last year 41-34 after scoring 24 points in the fourth quarter, a huge notch for Graham over Arizona coach Rich Rodriguez in their first seasons in the desert.

"You'd have to be living under a rock if you play for Arizona and don't realize how important the ASU rivalry is," Rodriguez said.

This year's game could be even bigger.

The Sun Devils know they'll face No. 8 Stanford in the Pac-12 championship game Dec. 7 after the Cardinal clinched the North - with help from Arizona (7-4, 4-4).

Where they play will be determined by what happens Saturday.

Beat Arizona and the Sun Devils will host the game. Lose and the game will be in Northern California.

Throw in Arizona's surprising 42-16 win over the Ducks and the stakes will be raised a few notches in this bitter rivalry.

"This game, you can add things to it, but you need no motivation for this one," Graham said.

Graham had been preparing Arizona State for the big stage since he arrived, getting the players to buy into his discipline-first ways.

They fought it some early in the process, but have clearly latched onto it this season, putting together an impressive list of victories, including Wisconsin, Washington, on the road over Utah and Oregon State.

The latest was perhaps the most impressive, a hold-onto-your-seat victory at UCLA that stretched the Sun Devils' win streak to five and propelled them into the conference title game with a spot in the Rose Bowl on the line.

"This is a very mature team, they know exactly what they're playing for, exactly what's at stake in this game and very, very focused," he said. "We have two steps left to accomplish our goal. Our goal is to be Pac-12 champions."

The first step in that process will be to beat Arizona.

From the day he was hired, Graham pointed to the Territorial Cup as his top priority.

Clearly, a national championship is the ultimate goal, with the Rose Bowl and Pac-12 championship on the list as well.

But those are long-term, only possibilities. Arizona is a game that's on the Sun Devils' schedule every season.

And when he first took the job, Graham quickly understood the significance of that one game as he spoke to former players, boosters, alumni and fans.

"One of the things that kind of took me back in my first year when I went out and talked to people, they talked about discipline and how they wanted to be represented," he said. "But clearly, the only game they talked about was this game."

Last week's was a big one for the Wildcats.

Ka'Deem Carey ran for 206 yards and four touchdowns while becoming Arizona's all-time leading rusher. He carried a school-record 48 times while scoring on runs of 6, 1, 9 and 1 yards to break Art Luppino's career record of 48 total touchdowns set from 1953-56. Carey also reached 3,913 career yards rushing, breaking the mark of 3,824 set by Trung Canidate from 1996-99.

"A good win, honestly," Rodriguez said. "This was a great opportunity for our guys and they took it."

The Wildcats have another great opportunity this week in their finale.

"We're trying to improve our bowl status and it's our last regular-season game but, in and of itself, it's the ASU game," Rodriguez said. "It's one of the biggest rivalries in college sports."

The road team has won the last four meetings in this series.
