KEY GAME INFORMATION
OREGON: Last season: 23-13, eliminated in the second round of the NIT.
Nickname: Ducks.
Coach: Dana Altman.
Conference: Pac-12.
Who's gone: G Elijah Brown, F MiKyle McIntosh and F Troy Brown Jr.
Who's back: Point guard Payton Pritchard enters his junior year as the team's top returning scorer with an average 14.5 points and 4.8 assists per game. Also back is fellow starter Paul White, a senior who averaged 9.4 points and 3.5 rebounds last season. Forward Kenny Wooten led the Pac-12 as a freshman last season with 2.6 blocks per game. Wooten was one of two freshmen to play in every game last season, joining Victor Bailey Jr.
Who's new: All eyes will be on 7-foot-2 center Bol Bol, the son of the late NBA star Manute Bol. He was considered a five-star prospect and the best prep recruit at center. He averaged 19.7 points and 7.6 rebounds for Findlay Prep in Nevada his senior season. Bol is expected to be a one-and-done for the Ducks. He's joined by fellow five-star recruit Louis King, who will miss the start of the season after he tore his meniscus during his senior season in Jersey City, New Jersey. The 6-foot-9 forward is expected to be back sometime around Dec. 1.
The Skinny: After going to the Final Four in the 2016-17 season, the Ducks faltered a bit last season and settled for an NIT appearance. The Ducks will have some obvious offensive power with Pritchard, so coach Dana Altman is emphasizing defense going into this season. Meanwhile, the Ducks will get plenty of attention because of Bol Bol.
Expectations: Las Vegas oddsmakers have the Ducks with a 1-in-25 shot to win the NCAA Tournament. But the Ducks were voted as the preseason favorite to win the Pac-12 title by the media that cover the team, and Oregon is also the top-ranked conference team in the AP Top 25.
WISCONSIN: Last season: 15-18, missed NCAA Tournament for first time in 19 years.
Nickname: Badgers.
Coach: Greg Gard.
Conference: Big Ten.
Who's gone: Reserve forwards Aaron Moesch and Andy Van Vliet (transferred to William & Mary).
Who's back: The Badgers get 95 percent of their scoring back from last season, led by senior forward Ethan Happ. The 6-foot-10 Happ (17.9 points per game, 8.0 rebounds, 3.7 assists) has been working on foul shooting and developing a mid-range jumper. Three important pieces in the backcourt are back from injuries, starting with guard Brad Davison. He emerged as an emotional leader during a freshman season in which he was hampered by a shoulder injury. D'Mitrik Trice (foot) and Kobe King (knee) give Gard depth and options at the perimeter. Getting guard Brevin Pritzl to hit consistently from 3-point range might make foes think twice about doubling Happ. Six-5 senior Khalil Iverson is the team's best athlete and embraces opportunities to guard an opponent's best scorer. Six-11 sophomore forward Nate Reuvers can hit jumpers but Badgers can get a boost if he can help Happ and Iverson on the boards.
Who's new: Trevor Anderson gives Gard another backcourt option after transferring from Wisconsin-Green Bay, where he averaged 9.8 points and 28 minutes in 20 games. He shot 37 percent from 3-point range. The Badgers added two scholarship players in their freshman class: guard Tai Strickland, who is the son of former NBA player Rod Strickland; and 6-8 forward Taylor Currie from Clarkston, Michigan.
The Skinny: With Happ leading the way, the Badgers have the ingredients of a team that should return to the NCAA Tournament. Happ, along with key upperclassmen Iverson and Pritzl, played on tourney teams that included Nigel Hayes and Bronson Koenig. The backcourt should be stronger with a healthy Davison, Trice and King. The Badgers won five of their last eight games last season because of better defense. They're stressing defense again going into this season.
Expectations: Wisconsin was a long shot to win the NCAA Tournament at 120-1, according to Las Vegas oddsmakers. It's on par with other Big Ten teams Maryland and Penn State. Michigan and Michigan State are the top favorites out of the league at 35-1.
PREVIEW
Surging Oregon hopes to suffocate steady Wisconsin

No. 12 seeds in the NCAA Tournament are often plucky mid-major schools who tend to be popular upset picks.

This year's tournament features three of those -- Murray State, Liberty and New Mexico State.

And then there are the Oregon Ducks.

Oregon, which qualified via the automatic bid that goes to the Pac-12 tournament champion, is playing like a monster right now and is merely a one-point underdog in its matchup against fifth-seeded Wisconsin in a first-round South Region game Thursday in San Jose, Calif.

"They're coming in hot," Wisconsin coach Greg Gard said.

The Ducks (23-12) have won eight consecutive games, allowing only one opponent in that stretch to score more than 61 points.

"We enjoy playing tough and playing defense and rebounding now," said Oregon senior forward Paul White. "That's big for us."

While Oregon had to reinvent itself after multiple key injuries, Wisconsin (23-10) has been a picture of stability, starting the same lineup in all but one game.

Speaking of stability, who has been better in college basketball over the past three seasons than Ethan Happ? The 6-foot-10 stat-stuffing senior is a three-time first-team All-Big Ten player who is averaging 17.5 points, 10.1 rebounds and 4.6 assists per game. Happ has posted two triple-doubles this season and has started all 138 games in his Badgers' career.

He also leads Wisconsin with 37 steals.

The Badgers had made 19 consecutive NCAA Tournament appearances before missing last season's event.

"I guess maybe we did take it for granted a little bit, hearing our name being called," Happ said on the Big Ten Network. "So, this was a little more special than the previous two I was a part of."

Happ will have to deal with Oregon's athleticism, shot-blocking and length. Coach Dana Altman fueled his team's turnaround with a starting lineup that features four players at least 6-9. Kenny Wooten is a 6-9 pogo stick who blocked four shots in the Pac-12 title game against Washington on Saturday after blocking four in the semifinal against Arizona State on Friday.

Wisconsin averages just 9.5 turnovers per game -- tied for fifth-best in the country -- but that skill will be tested by Oregon's mix of defenses and ability to press and trap. The Ducks, with their length, can cover the 3-point line, allowing teams to shoot just 29.4 percent from behind the arc.

The Badgers' D'Mitrik Trice (11.7 points per game, 40.0 percent on 3-pointers) and Brad Davison (10.7, 36.6) are going to need to supplement Happ's scoring.

Oregon, which had to play four games in four days in the conference tournament, is grateful for a Friday first-round date at a nearby site. The extra day definitely will help freshman wing Louis King (team-high 13.1 points per game), who could use the time to rest a sprained ankle suffered in the Pac-12 semifinals.

"Our guys are playing better," Altman said. "More confidence. A lot more energy focused in the right direction."

Point guard Payton Pritchard was the Most Valuable Player of the Pac-12 tournament, with 65 points, 22 assists and just four turnovers.

Oregon was the preseason Pac-12 favorite but took some time to find itself after losing the inside-outside skills of five-star freshman big man Bol Bol to a foot injury after nine games.

"I kind of can't remember what that mentality was back then," White said. "And I think that's a good sign, that I left that in the past. We've shed that skin, and we're a new kind of team. That's something we'll carry on to San Jose."
