| | | WICHITA ST: No team possesses the backcourt the Shockers have, as PG Fred VanVleet (11.6 PPG, 5.4 APG, 3.9 RPG) and SG Ron Baker (13.1 PPG, 3.8 RPG, 38% threes) complement each other perfectly. VanVleet is pass-first point guard, and he does that as well as anybody in the country with an assist-to-turnover ratio of 4.2 last season. Baker, on the other hand, has a great shooting touch with a high-basketball IQ to use screens to help him get open. SG Tekele Cotton (10.3 PPG, 4.0 RPG and 2.4 APG) gives the Shockers a proven third scorer in the backcourt, and like both VanVleet (42% threes) and Baker (38% threes), Cotton can also knock down long-range jumpers (37% threes). PF Darius Carter (7.9 PPG, 4.5 RPG, 2.4 APG) will try to fill in for departed Cleanthony Early, who averaged 16 points and six rebounds during the amazing 35-1 season. While it will be hard to match this record, the Shockers should once again be one of the top teams in the nation. |

*Loyola of Chicago-Wichita St. Preview* =======================================
By JEFF MEZYDLO STATS Senior Writer
Loyola Chicago (13-7) at Wichita State (18-2), 8:00 p.m. EDT
As Wichita State deals with an issue off the court, it will try to continue dominating on it.
The No. 12 Shockers can record a 30th straight Missouri Valley Conference victory by defeating one of the few teams to give them any trouble lately as Loyola of Chicago visits Koch Arena on Wednesday night.
Wichita State (18-2, 8-0) hasn't dealt with many negative distractions while going 53-3 since the start of last season, but learned that transfer guard Conner Frankamp was arrested over the weekend on suspicion of DUI. Frankamp, a high school standout in Wichita, began his college career by averaging 2.5 points in 27 games for Kansas last season.
Though Frankamp is ineligible to play this season, he's practicing with the team and is enough of a presence for coach Gregg Marshall and athletic director Eric Sexton to issue a joint statement Monday, saying the school is still gathering information and "will handle any discipline internally and in cooperation with any campus policies related to these types of allegations."
"We hold all of our student-athletes to a high standard," the statement added, "and take these matters very seriously."
With the incident having no direct impact on the roster, Wichita State expects to extend its win streaks in conference play and at home that date back nearly two years. The Shockers won their 27th straight at home with a 74-40 rout of Drake on Sunday.
"They do things the right way," Drake coach Ray Giacoletti said. "They play harder and tougher than anyone."
Wichita State has held its last six opponents to an average of 47.5 points and beat the last three by at least 20.
"We're just gelling together really well," said Ron Baker, who had 15 points Sunday and averages a team-leading 16.2. "As you can see from our last few Valley games, we're having a lot of fun out there."
The Shockers are 8-0 at home versus Loyola (13-7, 3-5) but struggled against the Ramblers in Chicago on Jan. 11 before winning 67-53. Wichita State's five-point halftime deficit remains its largest of the season, and Loyola was within eight with under four minutes left.
The Shockers shot 40.0 percent, including 1 of 9 from 3-point range, in the first half before hitting 15 of 21 with six 3s in the final 20 minutes. Tekele Cotton had 16 points, Baker scored 15 and Fred VanVleet added 14, 10 assists and six rebounds.
"There's never been a team that understands 40 minutes more than (Wichita State)," said Loyola coach Porter Moser, whose team shot 37.0 percent despite going 10 of 18 from 3-point range. "They had no panic in them at all."
VanVleet, an Illinois native, has totaled 36 points on 11-of-11 shooting in two games at Loyola since scoring three in last season's 57-45 home win over the Ramblers. VanVleet has averaged 8.3 assists and 7.3 boards in those three contests.
Loyola followed the loss to Wichita State by beating Drake but has since dropped three in a row. Leading scorer Christian Thomas (12.4 points per game) has been held to eight points in each of the last two games while Milton Doyle (11.5 ppg) has totaled 18 over the last three.
Thomas had three points on 1-of-9 shooting against the Shockers this month and has shot 5 for 25 in three career meetings.
Loyola has lost eight straight against Top 25 teams since winning at then-No. 15 Butler on Feb. 15, 2009.
