| | | VIRGINIA TECH: The biggest positive for this the Hokies is that they now have Buzz Williams as their new head coach. The former Marquette head man has shown throughout the years how to get the best out of his teams. SG Adam Smith (11.0 PPG, 2.3 RPG, 2.1 APG) battled calf and leg injuries last season, but he showed his potential when he scored 27 points against then-No. 1 Michigan State last season. The 6-foot-1 Smith does not have great size, but he is fearless when driving the ball, and does a great job at the foul line (82% FT). PG Devin Wilson (9.2 PPG, 4.8 APG, 3.2 RPG) is also another talented player, who as a freshman averaged 35.0 MPG. Virginia Tech is thin up front, but PF Shane Henry averaged a double-double on the JUCO level last season. | | VIRGINIA: Virginia will miss star Joe Harris from last year's team that earned a No. 1 seed in the NCAA Tournament, but the cupboard is not bare for coach Tony Bennett. SG Malcolm Brogdon (12.7 PPG 5.4 RPG, 37% threes) was the leading scorer on the team, and is one of the most complete players in the ACC. He does a nice job of playing under control, posting a 2-to-1 assist-to-turnover ratio. PF Anthony Gill (8.6 PPG, 4.0 RPG) and SG Justin Anderson (7.8 PPG, 3.2 RPG, 1.5 APG) are both capable of having big seasons for the Cavaliers. The defense will once again lead the way, as the team finished fifth in defense in the KenPom's defensive efficiency rankings. |

*Virginia Tech-Virginia Preview* ================================
By JORDAN GARRETSON STATS Writer
Virginia Tech (10-18) at Virginia (26-1), 4:00 p.m. EDT
Though Virginia's offense has slipped since losing Justin Anderson, the nation's best defense has gotten even better.
The second-ranked Cavaliers look to take another step toward wrapping up a second straight ACC crown Saturday when they host a Virginia Tech team that gave them fits one month ago.
Virginia (26-1, 14-1) owns a two-game lead over second-place Duke, has matched the 1981-82 team's best start in school history and is two wins away from clinching its first ever back-to-back outright conference titles.
The last five of the Cavaliers' seven straight wins have come without Anderson, their second-leading scorer (13.4 ppg), since he broke his finger in a Feb. 7 win over Louisville. They've scored 58.8 points per game while shooting 24.6 from 3-point range in his absence compared to 67.6 and 37.8 previously. Anderson's 46 3-pointers still lead the team by 18 over Malcolm Brogdon.
Virginia, however, has surrendered 46.2 points per game over its last five after giving up 53.5 in its first 10 league games.
Coach Tony Bennett's team won 70-34 at Wake Forest on Wednesday despite also being without starting point guard London Perrantes due to a broken nose and mild concussion suffered in Sunday's win over Florida State. His status is unclear.
"Everybody's been saying this week ... We don't think the Cavs can do it," forward Anthony Gill said. "We have a system. We abide by it. We have great players on this team that can score the ball and we proved that tonight."
Marial Shayok had seven points and four assists with one turnover while starting for Perrantes, while Evan Nolte had eight points and six rebounds in his fifth straight start in place of Anderson.
The Cavaliers held the Demon Deacons to 21.8 percent shooting and limited their leading scorers Codi Miller-McIntyre and Devin Thomas to a combined nine points, more than 17 below their season average.
"We said this is a program game, meaning doing it the way we've got to do it, all hands on deck - using that cliche," Bennett said. "We just had a complete game."
Virginia won its sixth straight in the series with Virginia Tech when Anderson scored 10 of his 12 points in the final 20 minutes of a 50-47 road victory Jan. 25.
The Hokies (10-18, 2-13), who led by as many as 10 in the second half of that game, squandered another chance at a marquee victory in a 91-86 home overtime loss to No. 4 Duke on Wednesday.
Freshman Jalen Hudson scored a season-high 23 but missed a potential go-ahead layup with four seconds left in regulation. He had played a combined 10 minutes in his previous two games after averaging 16.4 previously.
"He's the most talented guy on our roster but he doesn't have the work ethic on a consistent basis that he has to have," coach Buzz Williams said.
While the Hokies have been pesky at times at home, they're averaging 10 fewer points on the road, where they're 0-10. They've lost their three road games against ranked opponents by a total of 61 points.
Virginia Tech is 0-16 against ranked opponents since an 81-71 victory against No. 15 Oklahoma State on Dec. 1, 2012.
Brogdon, who leads the Cavaliers with 13.5 points per game, is 6 for 21 over his last two matchups - both at Virginia Tech.
