KEY GAME INFORMATION
ARIZONA ST: Like a lot of teams in the Pac-12, the Sun Devils are having to adjust to life without some top players from last season. Arizona State four of its best players, and will look to SF Shaquielle McKissic (9.0 PPG, 5.4 RPG, 2.6 APG) to become the leader of the team. He did a great job last season providing scoring and toughness as a role player, but will have to make the adjustment to being the main guy on the team. PF Jonathan Gilling (7.7 PPG, 3.8 RPG, 2.7 APG) is another role player that will be asked to become more of a leader on the team. For the Sun Devils to make a push to the upper half of the conference, they will have to get big contributions from JUCO swingman Roosevelt Scott, while freshman PG Tra Holder will likely man the point for this team.
UTAH: The Utes have a realistic chance of making the NCAA Tournament, in large part because of the play of PG Delon Wright (15.5 PPG, 6.8 RPG, 5.3 APG). At 6-foot-5, he has tremendous size for the point guard position. While he is not much of a threat from the outside (22% threes), he is an efficient scorer (56.1% FG). Not only is Wright the focal point on offense, he is an elite defender who will also guard the opponent's best player. In the frontcourt, PF Jordan Loveridge (14.7 PPG, 7.0 RPG, 2.3 APG) is a talented player who followed up a nice freshman season with a solid sophomore campaign. These two provide the Utes with one of the better inside-outside duos in the conference. For Utah to make the Big Dance, SG Brandon Taylor (10.6 PPG, 3.5 APG, 2.1 RPG) and swingman Dakarai Tucker (6.8 PPG, 39% threes) will have to score more to force defenses to pay attention to them.

*Arizona St.-Utah Preview* ==========================

By JEFF MEZYDLO STATS Senior Writer

Arizona State (15-12) at Utah (21-5), 10:30 p.m. EDT

Before Utah can focus on this weekend's visit from the Pac-12 leader, it wants to bounce back from its first defeat in almost a month.

Looking for an 18th straight home win, the No. 13 Utes can get back on track by preventing Arizona State from recording a season-high fourth consecutive victory Thursday night.

Win or lose, Utah coach Larry Krystkowiak has made it a point to keep his team on an even keel while always striving to get better.

"You won't know our record by our approach every day," he said. "It's human nature to be humbled after losses. You try and practice and prepare like you lost the last game. We want everyone to stay hungry.

"That's the great thing about sports. We can get the taste out of our mouth."

That's the goal after Utah's five-game winning streak ended with Sunday's 69-58 loss at Oregon.

Shooting a Pac-12-best 40.6 percent from 3-point range entering the contest, the Utes (21-5, 11-3) went 8 of 29 while taking six more 3 attempts than two-point tries. Utah also was outrebounded 23-14 in the second half and outscored 15-5 in second-chance points for the game.

Among the nation's top defensive teams with 56.1 points allowed per game, Utah yielded its highest total since losing 69-59 at UCLA on Jan. 29.

The Utes shot 50.0 percent in the first 23 games but 41.1 in the last three.

"We need to play harder," Krystkowiak said. "You get lost in playing hard defensively and we didn't do that on offense (Sunday).

"We need to have more attention to detail and I told our guys to be ready for ugly video and big-boy conversations."

The loss dropped Utah one game behind first-place Arizona, which comes to town Saturday.

Though Arizona State (15-12, 7-7) has dropped eight straight at Utah since winning there in January 1975, Krystkowiak sees no reason for his team to look ahead.

"We aren't concerned with (Arizona State) being a trap game," he said. "Nothing has changed with our approach. ... We won't discuss Arizona until Thursday after the game. That's our mindset."

Delon Wright had 21 points and Jordan Loveridge added 14 with eight rebounds as the Utes shot 53.7 percent in a 76-59 victory over Arizona State on Jan. 15.

The Sun Devils, however, won their next contest to snap a four-game skid and are 7-3 since that defeat.

"They're getting great performances from guys," Krystkowiak said. "It's not one guy but different people have stepped up. Their rotation seems clearer."

One of those contributors is freshman point guard Tra Holder, who was held scoreless with two assists against the Utes but has averaged 10.9 points and 4.9 assists in the 10 games since.

The Sun Devils shot 32.8 percent against USC on Saturday, but Holder and backup Jonathan Gilling hit key 3-pointers in the final two minutes to help them overcome a 10-point deficit for a 64-59 victory. Seven of Holder's 10 points came at the free-throw line, from which ASU went 20 of 26 compared to 3 of 5 for the Trojans.

Wright, who scored 20 against the Ducks, has averaged 21.3 points in three matchups with the Sun Devils.

ASU beat then-No. 6 Arizona 81-78 on Feb. 7, but it's 0-6 on the road against ranked teams since defeating then-No. 9 UCLA in January 2009.
