| TEXAS: Last season: 20-13, lost in first round of the NCAA Tournament.
Nickname: Longhorns.
Coach: Shaka Smart.
Conference: Big 12.
Who's gone: G Isaiah Taylor, F Prince Ibeh.
Who's back: Sophomore guards Eric Davis and Kerwin Roach weren't regular starters last season but are now the veteran leaders on a team of talented freshmen. Roach will be looked at early at point guard and Davis is the best returning 3-pointer shooter after making 42 last season.
Who's new: Forwards Jarrett Allen and James Banks will be expected to make an immediate impact. Texas needs some interior scoring and defensive stops after the graduation of shot blocker Ibeh, last season's Big 12 defensive player of the year.
The Skinny: Getting to the NCAA Tournament hasn't been a problem for Texas. Staying long is another story. The Longhorns haven't made it out of the first weekend since 2008. Smart, who is in just his second season at Texas, has been just as frustrated of late, with three consecutive first round losses. | | TEXAS TECH: Last season: 19-13, lost in first round of the NCAA Tournament.
Nickname: Red Raiders.
Coach: Chris Beard.
Conference: Big 12.
Who's gone: G Toddrick Gotcher, G Devaugntah Williams.
Who's back: F Zach Smith. Junior forward led the Red Raiders in rebounds (7.3 per game) and averaged 10 points. F Aaron Ross. The redshirt senior came off the bench all last season and averaged 10.3 points. C Norense Odiase. The junior averaged 8.5 points and 4.2 rebounds despite missing 12 Conference games due to a foot injury.
Who's new: F Anthony Livingston. A graduate transfer who was an All-Sun Belt performer at Arkansas State, the 6-9 senior averaged 15.7 points per game and 9.7 rebounds over two seasons. G Giovanni McLean. Also a graduate transfer, led Quinnipiac in scoring last season (12.9 ppg) and in free throw percentage (77.8 percent). G Shadell Millinghaus. Averaged 16. 9 points and 5.2 rebounds as a sophomore at Northwest Florida State College. G Niem Stevenson. Named NJCAA first team All-American last year at Seward County Community College (24.7 ppg, 6.9 rpg)
The Skinny: The Red Raiders haven't had a winning Big 12 record since 2006-07, when Beard was an assistant under Bob Knight and the last year prior to last season that they went to the NCAA Tournament. Texas Tech finished 9-9 in league play last season. |
