KEY GAME INFORMATION
BAYLOR: Point guard Kenny Chery (11.5 PPG, 4.7 APG, 2.6 RPG) stepped up in a big way last season in taking over this Baylor offense. He did a great job of playing under control and not turning the ball over with a 2.4 Ast/TO ratio. SF Royce O'Neale (7.1 PPG, 5.4 RPG, 2.9 APG) was not asked to do a lot of scoring last season, but the frontcourt is less crowded with the now-departed duo of Cory Jefferson and Isaiah Austin. With those guys gone, look for O'Neale to take his offensive game to another level. He averaged only 4.7 shots last year, but that number could double this season. PF Rico Gathers (6.4 PPG, 6.4 RPG) has a chance to be the top rebounder in the conference. He played only 17.8 MPG last season, and with that number potentially being 25-to-28 minutes, he could be in double figures every night. For the Bears to remain in the upper half of the Big 12, they will need big seasons from SF Taurean Prince (6.2 PPG, 2.8 RPG in 14.2 MPG) and swingman Ish Wainwright (1.9 PPG).
TEXAS: Texas coach Rick Barnes got himself off the hot seat last season by leading a young squad to 24 wins and now the Longhorns expect more in what could be a special season in Austin. They return a lot of important players from a team that made it to the NCAA Round of 32, while also bringing in one of the nation's most highly-coveted freshmen in PF Myles Turner, who has a chance to be a star from day one. He was not highly recruited early in his college basketball career because he was raw, but showed the potential last season that had every school chasing him. He stands 6-foot-11 and can score from anywhere on the court. His ability to hit the outside shot allows C Cameron Ridley (11.2 PPG, 8.2 RPG, 2.2 BPG) the room the dominate down low. After losing weight from his freshman to sophomore campaign, Ridley became a monster on both ends of the court. These two have the chance to be one of the most dominant rebounding duos in the country, making it difficult for the opponent to score. PG Isaiah Taylor (12.7 PPG, 4.0 APG, 3.3 RPG) was one of the biggest surprises in the Big 12 last season. Despite not being ranked in the top-300 in the 2013 freshman class, Taylor showed that he is a blur in the open court, while constantly putting pressure on the defense. He should be even better in his sophomore campaign. With slimmed-down veteran SF Jonathan Holmes (12.8 PPG, 7.2 RPG and 1.3 BPG) and volume shooter SG Javan Felix (11.6 PPG, 2.8 APG, 34% threes), the Longhorns have a great combination of talented youth and experience that should have them contending for the Big 12 title.

*Baylor-Texas Preview* ======================

By JEFF MEZYDLO STATS Senior Writer

Baylor (22-7) at Texas (17-12), 7:00 p.m. EDT

Paced by one of the nation's top reserves, Baylor is playing some of its best basketball when it matters most.

Looking for a fifth consecutive victory, Taurean Prince and the No. 19 Bears try to hand host Texas a season-high fifth straight loss Monday night.

Prince scored 20 for the second straight game and Rico Gathers added 17 with 10 rebounds for his Big 12-leading 15th double-double to help Baylor (22-7, 10-6) beat No. 20 West Virginia 78-66 on Sunday.

The Bears are tied with the Mountaineers and Iowa State for third place in the conference, all a game behind Oklahoma and two back of first-place Kansas heading into the final week of the regular season.

"We just have to keep it up and keep playing together as a team," said forward Royce O'Neale, who had 18 points.

Baylor has shot 48.4 percent in the last three games and a more impressive 30 of 57 from 3-point range.

"The only thing that we can control is the shot selection, and it has been very good," coach Scott Drew said.

Sixth-man Prince, who averages a team-leading 13.6 points and shoots 47.0 percent, has shot 52.6 percent and gone 13 of 25 from beyond the arc while scoring at least 20 in three of the last four.

"It helps a lot more when you have 12 to 13 guys telling you to shoot when you're open," the 6-foot-7 junior said. "When they have that type of confidence in you, the confidence in yourself starts to build off that."

It's also helped that Baylor has allowed an average of 56.8 points and 39.5 percent shooting in its last four.

"As we know, good defense leads to an easy offense," Drew said.

Though Baylor has dropped two straight at Texas (17-12, 6-10), it shot 48.4 percent while holding the Longhorns to 38.6 - including 5 of 26 from 3-point range - during an 83-60 home victory Jan. 31. Guard Kenny Chery had 23 points and O'Neale added 20.

The Bears have won two straight on the road after losing four of six away contests, and they expect a serious challenge from a desperate team on the NCAA tournament bubble.

"It's going to be very difficult," said Prince, who hit three 3-pointers and had 13 points versus Texas. "We have to pick up what we do defensively and be on top of things.

"We have a pretty good scheme against Texas based on their personnel, so we have to execute and play Baylor basketball."

Facing their fifth straight ranked opponent, the Longhorns' four straight defeats have each come by eight or fewer points, with three on the road.

"We've had some close, tough losses as of late but we still trust the system," guard Demarcus Holland said after scoring 15 in Saturday's 69-64 loss at No. 8 Kansas. "We are still excited to play our way into the tournament and I'm excited for our last two home games."

Texas is 2-9 and has dropped seven straight against ranked opponents this season. It's shot 38.3 percent and yielded an average of 70.0 points while going 1-3 against such teams at home.

Longhorns guard Isaiah Taylor has averaged 18.0 points and 6.8 assists in four games versus Baylor.
