KEY GAME INFORMATION
LOUISVILLE:
Coach: Chris Mack (first season).
Conference: Atlantic Coast.
Who's gone: Center Anas Mahmoud, guard Quentin Snider, forwards Deng Adel and Ray Spalding (NBA).
Who's back: Junior forward V.J. King (8.6 points per game) is the Cardinals' top returning scorer and looks to improve on offense and defense. Guards Dwayne Sutton and Darius Perry provided depth, and Perry will likely be the floor general. Six-foot-11 sophomore Malik Williams, a good perimeter shooter, looks to develop an inside game. Guard Ryan McMahon aims shoot more consistently and improve on defense. Forward Steven Enoch, a Connecticut transfer, is eligible to play and must find his role in the rotation. Sophomore forward Jordan Nwora looks to be more than a perimeter offensive threat.
Who's new: Guards Christen Cunningham (who was named a captain), Khwan Fore and forward Akoy Agau are three graduate transfers Mack signed to fill roster spots. Senior guard Will Rainey transferred from neighboring Spalding University but must sit out this season per NCAA rules.
The Skinny: Mack's late-spring arrival after nine seasons at Xavier left him scrambling to replace a handful of departures with grad transfers. He's also switching the defensive philosophy from pressing and trapping into a pack line philosophy, but with 10 scholarship players and a lack of height, Louisville must stay healthy.
Expectations: Oddsmakers have made the Cardinals a 120-1 longshot to win the national championship. Considering two scandals have cast a cloud over the program for the past three seasons, a controversy-free year of transition under Mack is an important step in the right direction.
TENNESSEE: Last season: 26-9, lost 63-62 to Loyola-Chicago in second round of NCAA Tournament
Nickname: Volunteers
Coach: Rick Barnes
Conference: Southeastern
Who's gone: Guards James Daniel (exhausted eligibility) and Chris Darrington (transferred to Toledo)
Who's back: Forward Grant Williams returns for his junior season after being selected by coaches as the 2018 SEC player of the year. He averaged 15.2 points and 6 rebounds last season. Forward Admiral Schofield, a second-team all-SEC selection last year with 13.9 points and 6.4 rebounds per game, worked out with NBA teams during the pre-draft process but decided to come back for his senior season. Junior guards Lamonte' Turner (10.9 points per game last year), Jordan Bowden (9.1) and Jordan Bone (7.3) also return. Bowden and Bone combined for 68 starts last year. Turner was Tennessee's third-leading scorer while coming off the bench. Kyle Alexander, a 6-foot-11 senior, led the Vols in offensive rebounds (85) and blocks (57) last season.
Who's new: Freshman D.J. Burns was rated as the nation's No. 108 prospect in his class according to composite rankings of recruiting sites compiled by 247Sports. The 6-9 forward had over 1,000 points and 1,000 rebounds at York Preparatory Academy in Rock Hill, South Carolina.
The Skinny: Tennessee returns its top six scorers from last year and heads into the season as one of the nation's most experienced teams. That explains why Tennessee is sixth in the Top 25, its highest preseason ranking ever.
Expectations: Las Vegas oddsmakers give Tennessee a 22-1 shot to win the national title, even though the Vols have never reached a Final Four. The only teams with better odds are Duke, Kentucky, Gonzaga, Kansas, North Carolina, Villanova, Nevada and Virginia. The SEC preseason media poll has Tennessee finishing second in the league, behind only Kentucky.
PREVIEW
No. 5 Tennessee welcomes back Turner vs. Louisville

After a trio of warm-up games for each squad, No. 5 Tennessee and Louisville will square off Wednesday evening at the Barclays Center in Brooklyn in the first game of the NIT Season Tip-Off.

The other NIT Season Tip-Off semifinal is No. 2 Kansas vs. Marquette. The winners of each game and losers of each game will play each other on Friday. That could set up a top five matchup if both Tennessee and Kansas win.

"Everyone thinks it's going to (be) a Tennessee-Kansas final," Tennessee coach Rick Barnes said. "It's not going to happen unless Tennessee and Kansas play good basketball. Marquette and Louisville are capable of winning that tournament. There are coaches that believe it, players that believe it; the team that wins is going to have to win it, no gimmes. No matter if there's a number in front of you or not, you've got to go play good basketball."

While both Tennessee and Louisville started the season 3-0, expectations are drastically different for each.

For Tennessee, the Vols enter Wednesday's game as the favorite and as one of the top teams in the nation. After making a surprise run to the SEC title last season, Tennessee returned nearly its entire lineup and is a potential Final Four contender.

Tennessee should be at full strength after Barnes confirmed that guard Lamonte Turner, the reigning Southeastern Conference sixth man of the year, will be back after dealing with a shoulder injury that's sidelined him the first three games. Turner averaged 10.9 points a season ago and shot 40 percent from 3-point range. The Vols lineup is led by star forwards Grant Williams, who is currently averaging 22 points per game, and Admiral Schofield, a constant threat to have a double-double.

"They have an identity," Mack said. "They're going to post it, they're going to offensive rebound it and on the defensive end they're going to try to rattle you."

As for Louisville, the Cardinals have a makeshift roster after a coaching change and NCAA sanctions forced first-year coach Chris Mack to reach into the transfer market to find starting point guard Christen Cunningham from Samford and backup Khwan Fore. After missing the tournament last season, the Cardinals are fielding a roster that includes just six players who were recruited to Louisville from high school.

"We're a work in progress like every team in November, and I don't say that to down our guys, it's just reality," Mack said. "We're going to be a heck of a lot better in December and we're going to be a heck of a lot better in January, and we're going to need to be if you look at our schedule."

The Cardinals may have the toughest schedule in the country with nine games scheduled against the preseason Top 10 teams in the country.

"Games like this give you an opportunity to play in the post-season," Mack said.

One key to watch is Louisville's remarkable ability to get to the foul line. The Cardinals are currently No. 1 in the nation in free throws attempted per game and No. 1 in free throws as a percentage of points (36 percent). Meanwhile Tennessee gets 22.2 percent of its points from the line, and the Vols had two players with four fouls and three more with three in its 66-53 win over Georgia Tech last Tuesday.

Wednesday's game will be the first-ever meeting between Barnes and Mack, and a win would send Barnes past legendary coach John Wooden on the all-time Division I wins list. They are currently tied at 664.
