KEY GAME INFORMATION
GEORGIA TECH: Last season: 13-19, went 6-12 in league play to finish 13th.
Nickname: Yellow Jackets.
Coach: Josh Pastner.
Conference: Atlantic Coast.
Who's gone: Guard Josh Okogie, center Ben Lammers, guard Tadric Jackson.
Who's back: Point guard Jose Alvarado, guard Curtis Haywood III, guard Brandon Alston, center Abdoulaye Gueye, forward Moses Wright and forward Evan Cole. Pastner doesn't plan to settle on his starters for another couple of weeks, but Alvarado, Haywood, Gueye and Wright will have to play their way out of a job. The team will rely heavily on Alvarado, a sophomore who averaged 12 points last year and led the Jackets in assists. Gueye and Alston are seniors. Haywood, Wright and Cole are sophomores.
Who's new: G Michael Devoe, G Shembari Phillips, forward Khalid Moore, forward Kristian Sjolund.
The Skinny: Okogie's early departure for the NBA essentially ended any chance Georgia Tech had of making the NCAA Tournament. The Jackets have no proven scorers, so the responsibility will fall to Alvarado, Haywood, Alston, Wright, Phillips and Devoe to shore up the offense.
Expectations: Pastner knows his team will be hard pressed to compete in the ACC as the Jackets are likely to miss the NCAA Tournament for the ninth straight year. Pastner's predecessor, Brian Gregory, made it to one NIT before he was fired. Pastner led the Jackets to the NIT title game in 2017. Las Vegas oddsmakers list Georgia Tech's chance of winning the national title at 600-1.
TENNESSEE: Last season: 26-9, lost 63-62 to Loyola-Chicago in second round of NCAA Tournament
Nickname: Volunteers
Coach: Rick Barnes
Conference: Southeastern
Who's gone: Guards James Daniel (exhausted eligibility) and Chris Darrington (transferred to Toledo)
Who's back: Forward Grant Williams returns for his junior season after being selected by coaches as the 2018 SEC player of the year. He averaged 15.2 points and 6 rebounds last season. Forward Admiral Schofield, a second-team all-SEC selection last year with 13.9 points and 6.4 rebounds per game, worked out with NBA teams during the pre-draft process but decided to come back for his senior season. Junior guards Lamonte' Turner (10.9 points per game last year), Jordan Bowden (9.1) and Jordan Bone (7.3) also return. Bowden and Bone combined for 68 starts last year. Turner was Tennessee's third-leading scorer while coming off the bench. Kyle Alexander, a 6-foot-11 senior, led the Vols in offensive rebounds (85) and blocks (57) last season.
Who's new: Freshman D.J. Burns was rated as the nation's No. 108 prospect in his class according to composite rankings of recruiting sites compiled by 247Sports. The 6-9 forward had over 1,000 points and 1,000 rebounds at York Preparatory Academy in Rock Hill, South Carolina.
The Skinny: Tennessee returns its top six scorers from last year and heads into the season as one of the nation's most experienced teams. That explains why Tennessee is sixth in the Top 25, its highest preseason ranking ever.
Expectations: Las Vegas oddsmakers give Tennessee a 22-1 shot to win the national title, even though the Vols have never reached a Final Four. The only teams with better odds are Duke, Kentucky, Gonzaga, Kansas, North Carolina, Villanova, Nevada and Virginia. The SEC preseason media poll has Tennessee finishing second in the league, behind only Kentucky.
PREVIEW
No. 5 Tennessee, Williams ready for Georgia Tech

Teams with offenses that are off to a highly productive start meet Tuesday when No. 5 Tennessee hosts Georgia Tech in an early-season non-conference game pitting two Power 5 programs.

The Volunteers (2-0) have scored a combined 173 points in their first two wins over Lenoir Rhyne and Louisiana, the most points by a Tennessee team through the first two games of the season since 2011-12 when 177 points were scored.

Tennessee has shot 61.9 and 54 percent from the field in its first two games. The Volunteers shot 50 percent or better from the field during back-to-back games only once last season.

All five Tennessee starters scored in double figures in the first two games. In the 87-65 win over Louisiana on Friday, junior forward Grant Williams recorded his fourth career 30-point game, finishing with 31 points on 11-of-15 shooting.

Commenting on Tennessee's 27 assists against Louisiana, Tennessee coach Rick Barnes said: "We love that. That's something that we like to think that we'll do, that we'll share the ball.

"We ran one or two ball screens out of random motion. We're not a heavy ball screen team, so our whole deal is based on passing, cutting, screening and movement. And to see us make those plays is what we want to see. We do really want to share the ball."

Georgia Tech (1-0) opened its season Friday with an 88-69 victory over visiting Lamar, making 12 3-pointers, the most in the three years Josh Pastner has been coach.

The Yellow Jackets' 26 assists were their most since recording 27 against Winston-Salem State on Jan. 3, 2007.

Senior Brandon Alston led four Georgia Tech players in double-figures with 17 points.

"We had 26 assists on 32 made field goals, which is outstanding," Pastner said. "We have a goal to get 60 percent of our field goals assisted every time we play. So that was an outstanding stat for us."

Georgia Tech sophomore guard Jose Alvarado had 14 points and a team-high five assists against Lamar. He played in his first game since missing the last seven contests last season because of an arm injury. He had two of Georgia Tech's 12 3-pointers. Alston went 4-of-5 from beyond the arc.

"We're going to live a lot of times by the 3-point shot," Pastner said. "I'm hoping we don't die by it. But we're going to live a lot by the 3-point shot, because I really believe in our shooting ability."

Williams, who also had 10 rebounds for Tennessee against Louisiana, finished making 3 of 4 shots from 3-point range. His teammates made a combined 6 of 17 from there.

"He has been working on (shooting the 3)," Barnes said of Williams. "Probably not as much as Kyle (Alexander), who actually can shoot the ball (but did not attempt a 3-pointer against Louisiana). I don't know why he doesn't shoot it sometimes.

"But Grant does work at it. All of our guys do. We have all of them shoot it. He just has to pick his spots for the right times to shoot it, that's what's most important."
