| GEORGIA TECH: Last season: 21-15, lost in quarterfinals of the NIT
Nickname: Yellow Jackets
Coach: Josh Pastner
Conference: Atlantic Coast.
Who's gone: G Marcus Georges-Hunt, G Adam Smith, F Charles Mitchell, F Nick Jacobs.
Who's back: G Josh Heath. Senior started 21 games and averaged 2.79 assists; F Quinton Stephens. Senior who shot 32 percent from 3-point range; G Tadric Jackson. Junior made one start and scored in double-figures five times; C Ben Lammers. Junior who shot 65.5 percent in limited minutes and led team with 47 blocks.
Who's new: F Kellen McCormick. Graduate transfer shot 42 percent from 3-point range in three seasons at Western Michigan; G/F Jodan Price. Another graduate transfer who started 10 games the last two seasons at Eastern Michigan. F Sylvester Ogbonda. A 6-foot-10 native of Nigeria who redshirted last season.
The Skinny: Taking over after Brian Gregory was fired, Pastner faces a massive rebuilding job at Georgia Tech. He must replace four starters who combined to average 52.3 points and 21.2 rebounds per game as well as forward James White, the team's third-leading rebounder (4.4). The Yellow Jackets haven't been to the NCAA Tournament since 2010 and that doesn't figure to change this season. | | TENNESSEE: Last season: 15-19, 6-12 SEC
Nickname: Volunteers
Coach: Rick Barnes
Conference: SEC
Who's gone: G Kevin Punter Jr., F Armani Moore, F Derek Reese, G Devon Baulkman
Who's back: G Robert Hubbs averaged 10.6 points per game and made 16 starts last season. F Admiral Schofield started 22 games last season and averaged 7.6 points and 4 rebounds. G Detrick Mostella had 8.4 points per game last season. G Shembari Phillips and F Kyle Alexander each made 11 starts last season.
Who's new: Tennessee has seven true freshmen as well as redshirt freshman G Lamonte Turner and Utah State graduate transfer F Lew Evans. The list of true freshmen includes Jordan Bone, Jordan Bowden, Jalen Johnson, Kwe Parker and walk-on Jacob Fleschman in the backcourt and John Fulkerson and Grant Williams in the frontcourt.
The Skinny: Banes believes his team has more talent and depth this season, even though the SEC media poll has Tennessee finishing 13th in the league. Tennessee needs Hubbs to produce a breakthrough senior season and must get big contributions from its freshman class. |
