| | | GEORGIA TECH: Last season: 21-15, lost in quarterfinals of the NIT
Nickname: Yellow Jackets
Coach: Josh Pastner
Conference: Atlantic Coast.
Who's gone: G Marcus Georges-Hunt, G Adam Smith, F Charles Mitchell, F Nick Jacobs.
Who's back: G Josh Heath. Senior started 21 games and averaged 2.79 assists; F Quinton Stephens. Senior who shot 32 percent from 3-point range; G Tadric Jackson. Junior made one start and scored in double-figures five times; C Ben Lammers. Junior who shot 65.5 percent in limited minutes and led team with 47 blocks.
Who's new: F Kellen McCormick. Graduate transfer shot 42 percent from 3-point range in three seasons at Western Michigan; G/F Jodan Price. Another graduate transfer who started 10 games the last two seasons at Eastern Michigan. F Sylvester Ogbonda. A 6-foot-10 native of Nigeria who redshirted last season.
The Skinny: Taking over after Brian Gregory was fired, Pastner faces a massive rebuilding job at Georgia Tech. He must replace four starters who combined to average 52.3 points and 21.2 rebounds per game as well as forward James White, the team's third-leading rebounder (4.4). The Yellow Jackets haven't been to the NCAA Tournament since 2010 and that doesn't figure to change this season. | | TCU: Last season: 12-21.
Nickname: Horned Frogs.
Coach: Jamie Dixon.
Conference: Big 12.
Who's gone: G Chauncey Collins, F Devonta Abron, Coach Trent Johnson.
Who's back: G Malique Trent, top returning scorer at 11.6 points per game; F Karviar Shepherd, senior season for the once highly touted big-man recruit who averaged 7.1 points and 5.2 rebounds last season; G Brandon Parrish, a senior, was the only TCU player to start every game last season (8.7 points per game); G Kenrich Williams, who averaged 8.6 points and 6.7 rebounds in 2014-15, returns for his junior year after missing last season injured.
Who's new: G Jaylen Fisher. Freshman point guard expected to have an immediate impact for the Frogs. Despite late start in recruiting for TCU, Dixon also added Desmond Bane, a top prep guard from Indiana, and 6-7 forward Kouat Noi.
The Skinny: The Horned Frogs haven't won an NCAA Tournament game since 1987, when Dixon was a senior guard for them, and their last tournament appearance was 1998. While Dixon led Pitt to 11 NCAAs the past 13 seasons, he has a big challenge at his alma mater. TCU has won only eight Big 12 games in four seasons since moving to the power Conference that has been the top RPI league each of the last three seasons. |
