KEY GAME INFORMATION
DUKE: Last season: 29-8, lost to Kansas in the Elite Eight.
Nickname: Blue Devils.
Coach: Mike Krzyzewski.
Conference: Atlantic Coast.
Who's gone: All five starters. Big men Marvin Bagley III and Wendell Carter Jr., and guards Grayson Allen, Gary Trent Jr. and Trevon Duval are all in the NBA.
Who's back: Not much. Center Marques Bolden, the team's leading returning scorer, averaged 3.9 points in less than 13 minutes per game while Javin Delaurier is the top returning rebounder at 4.0 rpg.
Who's new: The Blue Devils brought in the consensus No. 1 recruiting class and four of its members are expected to start. They're led by Canadian guard and preseason AP All-American R.J. Barrett and athletic freak Zion Williamson ' who at 6-foot-7 and 285 pounds has filled YouTube with highlight-reel dunks. Point guard Tre Jones is the younger brother of Tyus Jones, the most outstanding player at the 2015 Final Four for Duke.
The Skinny: It's title-or-bust again for Duke's latest crop of players with the potential to jump to the NBA after only one season in college. Krzyzewski has installed an offensive system that depends on the players' versatility and their court sense to make intelligent reads and decisions. That system helped the Golden State Warriors become an NBA dynasty, and Krzyzewski hopes it works as well with his talented group.
Expectations: The Blue Devils are favorites to win the NCAA Tournament at 5-to-1, according to Las Vegas oddsmakers.
SYRACUSE: Last season: 23-14, lost in the Sweet 16 of NCAA Tournament
Nickname: Orange
Coach: Jim Boeheim, 43rd season
Conference: Atlantic Coast
Who's gone: F Matthew Moyer transferred after his redshirt freshman year and graduate transfer G Geno Thorpe left the team after six games.
Who's back: G Tyus Battle, the team's leading scorer last season (19.2), decided to return for his junior year after testing his NBA chances. He'll be joined by sophomore F Oshae Brissett, who's coming off an impressive freshman season (14.9 points, 8.8 rebounds, 38 minutes), senior G Frank Howard (14.4 points, 4.7 assists), sophomore F Marek Dolezaj (5.8 points, 4.8 rebounds), and C Paschal Chukwu (5.4 points, 6.8 rebounds, 91 blocks). Also returning are: G Howard Washington, who's recovering from a torn ACL; F Bourama Sidibe, who had offseason surgery for tendinitis; and G/F Elijah Hughes, who had to sit last year after transferring from East Carolina.
Who's new: Boeheim welcomes a class that includes G Jalen Carey, F Robert Braswell, and Boeheim's youngest son, Buddy, a 6-foot-5 point guard who will wear No. 35, the same number his dad wore when he played for the Orange in the 1960s.
The Skinny: Last year Syracuse was picked in the preseason to finish 10th and pretty much lived up to the low expectations as injuries plagued a team that finished 8-10 in the ACC. But unlike the year before when Syracuse was the top seed in the NIT, meaning the Orange were the last team out of the NCAA Tournament, they managed to squeak in last March as the last team in and won three games to reach the Sweet 16, stunning Arizona State, TCU and Michigan State in low-scoring games before losing to Duke by just 4 points. This year's team is ranked 16th in the preseason poll, has the personnel to vie for a top spot in the ACC and, for a change, easily secure an NCAA Tournament bid.
Expectations: Las Vegas oddsmakers have Syracuse a long shot to win the NCAA Tournament, on par with Purdue and well behind ACC rival Duke and Kentucky, the top two favorites. ___
PREVIEW
Boeheim to coach as Syracuse hosts No. 1 Duke

Recent developments have changed the tone of top-ranked Duke's visit to Syracuse for an ACC game on Saturday night.

Duke freshman sensation Zion Williamson exited Wednesday night's loss against North Carolina with a Grade 1 right knee sprain. He is not expected to play Saturday, despite being listed as "day-to-day," Stadium Sports Network reported Friday.

Earlier Wednesday, Syracuse knocked off Louisville, but the evening turned tragic. Orange coach Jim Boeheim was the behind the wheel when his vehicle struck and killed a pedestrian on a Syracuse highway.

Boeheim issued a statement Thursday that he was "heartbroken that a member of our community dies as the result of last night's accident."

Boeheim did not coach at practice Thursday. On Friday, Syracuse athletic director John Wildhack announced that Boeheim will return to coach Saturday.

"The Boeheim family is heartbroken over what happened, as we all are," Wildhack said, in part, in a statement Friday. "This is a very difficult time. I know that coach Boeheim's players gain strength from him, just as he gains strength from his players. Our entire community gains strength from each other."

An NCAA on-campus attendance record is still expected to be part of the scene. Because of a reconfiguration of the Carrier Dome, a crowd of nearly 36,000 has been expected, which would break the record of 35,446, set in Duke-Syracuse games in 2014 and 2015.

Because of Boeheim's accident that killed 51-year-old Jorge Jimenez, ESPN elected to move its Saturday pregame "GameDay" show from Syracuse and hold it at its Bristol, Conn., studios instead.

Duke (23-3, 11-2 ACC) is trying to respond from the injury to Williamson, who was averaging 22.4 points per game before departing in the first minute of the North Carolina game.

"We just have to regroup," coach Mike Krzyzewski said.

"We have to figure out what this means. We're not going to draw any conclusions from this (North Carolina) game, except the fact that we have a loss. ... We have to come up with a game plan based on Zion not playing. Hopefully, he'll be back playing sometime in the near future."

Duke faced a bleak situation last month when point guard Tre Jones was injured against Syracuse (18-8, 9-4), with a showdown against Virginia next on the schedule. The Blue Devils beat the Cavaliers 72-70 without Jones.

Now, Williamson's absence complicates matters for the Blue Devils.

"We really have to try to figure out different things," said freshman forward RJ Barrett, the ACC's scoring leader at 23.1 points per game.

Until the loss to North Carolina, the Blue Devils' only ACC setback had been a 95-91 overtime result at home against Syracuse on Jan. 14.

Duke played the first meeting with Syracuse without freshman forward Cam Reddish, who was ill, and all except the first few minutes without Jones, who exited with a separated shoulder after colliding with Syracuse guard Frank Howard.

Even then, Syracuse had to dig out of a double-figure deficit to pull out the victory.

Boeheim said earlier this week that Duke's offense is formidable on many levels.

"There's no way to slow them down," he said. "We had our best offensive game of the year against them and that's why we won the game."

Duke enters the weekend in a first-place tie in the ACC with Virginia and North Carolina.
