KEY GAME INFORMATION
WISCONSIN: Last season: 15-18, missed NCAA Tournament for first time in 19 years.
Nickname: Badgers.
Coach: Greg Gard.
Conference: Big Ten.
Who's gone: Reserve forwards Aaron Moesch and Andy Van Vliet (transferred to William & Mary).
Who's back: The Badgers get 95 percent of their scoring back from last season, led by senior forward Ethan Happ. The 6-foot-10 Happ (17.9 points per game, 8.0 rebounds, 3.7 assists) has been working on foul shooting and developing a mid-range jumper. Three important pieces in the backcourt are back from injuries, starting with guard Brad Davison. He emerged as an emotional leader during a freshman season in which he was hampered by a shoulder injury. D'Mitrik Trice (foot) and Kobe King (knee) give Gard depth and options at the perimeter. Getting guard Brevin Pritzl to hit consistently from 3-point range might make foes think twice about doubling Happ. Six-5 senior Khalil Iverson is the team's best athlete and embraces opportunities to guard an opponent's best scorer. Six-11 sophomore forward Nate Reuvers can hit jumpers but Badgers can get a boost if he can help Happ and Iverson on the boards.
Who's new: Trevor Anderson gives Gard another backcourt option after transferring from Wisconsin-Green Bay, where he averaged 9.8 points and 28 minutes in 20 games. He shot 37 percent from 3-point range. The Badgers added two scholarship players in their freshman class: guard Tai Strickland, who is the son of former NBA player Rod Strickland; and 6-8 forward Taylor Currie from Clarkston, Michigan.
The Skinny: With Happ leading the way, the Badgers have the ingredients of a team that should return to the NCAA Tournament. Happ, along with key upperclassmen Iverson and Pritzl, played on tourney teams that included Nigel Hayes and Bronson Koenig. The backcourt should be stronger with a healthy Davison, Trice and King. The Badgers won five of their last eight games last season because of better defense. They're stressing defense again going into this season.
Expectations: Wisconsin was a long shot to win the NCAA Tournament at 120-1, according to Las Vegas oddsmakers. It's on par with other Big Ten teams Maryland and Penn State. Michigan and Michigan State are the top favorites out of the league at 35-1.
STANFORD: Last season: 19-16.
Nickname: Cardinal.
Coach: Jerod Haase, third season.
Conference: Pac-12.
Who's gone: F Reid Travis transferred to Kentucky as a graduate transfer, Dorian Pickens.
Who's back: G Daejon Davis (10.7 ppg) and F KZ Okpala (10.0 ppg) are experienced members from the sophomore class while 7-foot center Josh Sharma is the lone senior on the roster but has never started a game. He blocked 27 shots last season.
The Skinny: The Cardinal's tie for third place in the Pac-12 with 11 wins marked their highest showing and victory total in a decade. Now, Haase has a young roster featuring 11 of 15 players who are freshmen or sophomores ' but with a nationally ranked recruiting class the freshmen could make an immediate impact. Stanford loses Travis' averages of 19.5 points and 8.7 rebounds.
Expectations: Las Vegas oddsmakers have Stanford's chances of winning it all in the NCAA Tournament at 600-1.
PREVIEW
Wisconsin-Stanford Preview

MADISON -- Wisconsin missed the NCAA Tournament for the first time since 1998 last season in large part because of a poor start.

The Badgers opened the season with a 3-5 mark in non-conference play and stumbled as the year went on, plagued by a rash of injuries an inexperience.

Now healthy and close to full-strength, Wisconsin has learned from its struggles of a year ago and brings a perfect 3-0 record -- including an impressive road victory at Xavier last week -- and it's first Top 25 ranking (No. 25) in over a year to the Bahamas where the Badgers will open the Battle 4 Atlantis Wednesday afternoon against Stanford (2-1).

"A road win like that gives you so much confidence," sophomore forward Nate Reuvers said of winning at Xavier. "We didn't win those games last year. This year we're thinking we should beat everybody.

"There is no reason ... we're not going into a game thinking we're going to lose."

Senior forward Ethan Happ has led the way so far and picked up his second Big Ten Player of the Week honor after average 22.5 points, 12.5 rebounds and 5.5 assists in to games last week.

"We have, in our opinion, the best player in the country," sophomore guard Brad Davison said. "And when you put pieces around the best player in the country and he is willing to drive in and kick, there is no reason not be confident because you're getting good looks."

But unlike a year ago when Happ had to bear most of Wisconsin's scoring burden, he's had plenty of help so far. Sophomore guard D'Mitrik Trice, who missed the Badgers' last 23 games with an injury last season, is knocking down 65 percent of his 3-point attempts while averaging 18.3 points per game.

Brvin Pritzl is off to a good start, too, averaging 11.0 points on 42.9 percent shooting while Davison is averaging 11.7 points on 40 percent shooting.

"We have strength in numbers," Trice said. "We have a lot of shooters and people that can make plays. I think our assist numbers will go up because of that. We have a lot of guys who like to share the ball. And we're focused on taking care of the ball a lot more."

The Cardinal opened the season with a pair of victories before a blowout loss to North Carolina last week. Stanford hit 7-of-22 3-pointer but shot 40 percent overall in the contest while committing 15 turnovers and allowing the Tar Heels to connect at a 49.3 percent clip, including a 6-for-13 mark from distance.

"My goal going into this game was just to see our guys compete," head coach Jerod Haase said. "Offensively and defensively, especially in the first half, I didn't feel that we did."

Sophomore KZ Okpala led Stanford with 16 points and nine rebounds in the loss and leads the league in scoring with 22.7 points per game.

Tuesday's contest marks the tenth all-time meeting between the two programs but just the first since Stanford's 95-78 victory on Dec. 27, 1994. The Cardinal lead the series, 6-3.
