| | | MISSISSIPPI ST: Last season: 14-17
Nickname: Bulldogs.
Coach: Ben Howland.
Conference: Southeastern Conference.
Who's gone: F Gavin Ware, G Craig Sword, G Malik Newman, G/F Travis Daniels
Who's back: G Quinndary Weatherspoon. The sophomore was one of the SEC's most productive freshmen last season, averaging 12 points and 4.7 rebounds per game. G I.J. Ready. The veteran point guard played in 30 games, starting 22, and averaged 9.2 points per game.
Who's new: F Schnider Herard. Mississippi State needs a big-bodied forward and the 6-foot-10, 250-pounder should get plenty of playing time. G/F Mario Kegler. The 6-foot-7 freshman should be an immediate contributor after playing last season at Oak Hill Academy in Virginia. G Tyson Carter. The 6-foot-4 guard will be playing for his hometown team after starring for Starkville HS. Gives the Bulldogs a 3-point shooting presence they lacked at times last season.
The Skinny: The Bulldogs haven't made the NCAA Tournament since 2009, but Howland, who is in his second season with the program, has quickly amassed some impressive talent that could make the program competitive in the SEC once again. | | S CAROLINA: Last season: 25-9, lost in second round of the NIT.
Nickname: Gamecocks.
Coach: Frank Martin.
Conference: Southeastern.
Who's gone: F Michael Carrera, a first-team all-SEC selection last year, F Mindaugus Kacinas, C Laimonis Chatkevicious, G Marcus Stroman, G Jamall Gregory, F Raymond Doby, F Eric Cobb.
Who's back: G Sindarius Thornwell is the team's top returning scorer at 13.5 points a game and made the all-SEC defensive team, G Duane Notice was named the SEC sixth man of the year.
Who's new: G Tommy Corchiani, G Hassani Gravett, F Khadim Gueye, G Kory Holden, F Sedee Keita, F Maik Kotsar, F Ran Tut.
The Skinny: South Carolina infamously ' and incorrectly ' was sent a text from the NCAA saying it made the NCAA Tournament, then was not picked. The Gamecocks won't have many big bodies as they try to make the tournament for the first time since 2004. |
