*Butler-Providence Preview* ===========================
By JORDAN GARRETSON STATS Writer
Butler (21-9) at Providence (21-9), 12:00 p.m. EDT
Butler couldn't overcome a rough performance by its leading scorer, costing it a clear path to the No. 2 seed in the Big East tournament.
The 21st-ranked Bulldogs likely need to get Kellen Dunham back on track in order to keep up with No. 24 Providence's high-scoring duo in Saturday's regular-season finale.
These teams are tied with Georgetown for second-place, and a number of scenarios are in play for their seeding next week at Madison Square Garden. Butler (21-9, 11-6) needs a victory and a Georgetown loss to Seton Hall to clinch the second seed, while it could drop to fourth with a loss and a Georgetown victory. The Friars (21-9, 11-6) can earn the second seed simply by winning but could fall as low as fifth with a loss and wins by Georgetown and St. John's, which is at No. 4 Villanova.
Besides the top seed - already secured by Villanova - the No. 2 seed is the only other team that gets a bye into the quarterfinals.
Butler had been in sole possession of second place before being held to its second-lowest point total this season in Tuesday's 60-54 loss to the Hoyas.
"We are really disappointed, but as I told them in the locker room, this is what we signed up for," coach Chris Holtmann said. "We can play better than this, and we will."
Dunham, the league's third-leading scorer (16.7 ppg) who had shot 51.0 percent in his previous seven games while scoring 19-plus six times, was held to eight points on 3-of-12 shooting. He played 37 minutes while coming off the bench for the first time since he was a freshman in 2012-13 as Holtmann opted to start seldom-used senior Jackson Aldridge for senior night.
The Bulldogs have had a difficult time winning when Dunham is off, going 6-7 when he shoots worse than 50.0 percent.
Fellow backcourt mates Alex Barlow and Roosevelt Jones combined for eight of Butler's 15 turnovers. The Bulldogs shot 35.3 percent and maybe most concerning with the postseason on the horizon was their 10-for-22 free-throw shooting, as Andrew Chrabascz missed all six of his attempts. Butler was coming off a 22-for-27 performance at the charity stripe against DePaul but ranks eighth in the conference with a 67.5 free-throw percentage. Providence is fifth at 70.7.
Dunham's 18 points on 6-for-16 shooting wasn't enough in a 66-62 home loss to Providence on Jan. 6, dropping Butler to 0-3 in the all-time series. Kris Dunn scored 20 of his career-high 25 in the second half to rally the Friars from a seven-point halftime deficit.
Providence continues to be led by LaDontae Henton, who leads the conference with 20.5 points per game, as well as Dunn (15.2 ppg). Though Henton and freshman Ben Bentil each scored 21 in Wednesday's 79-66 victory over Seton Hall, it was Dunn pushing the Friars to victory. He scored all 17 of his points in the second half as Providence outscored the Pirates 50-29 over the final 20 minutes.
Dunn is one of three players nationally averaging at least 15.0 points and 7.0 assists, while Henton has shot 50.0 percent or better in four straight games.
Butler is looking to defeat its third straight ranked opponent on the road after knocking off St. John's and Seton Hall teams that were ranked 15th and 21st in January.
