KEY GAME INFORMATION
N CAROLINA: Last season: 33-7, won program's sixth NCAA championship.
Who's gone: SF Justin Jackson, F/C Kennedy Meeks, F Isaiah Hicks, F Tony Bradley Jr., G Nate Britt.
Who's back: Final Four Most Outstanding Player Joel Berry II (14.7 points) returns at the point, though he could miss the start of the season after breaking a bone in his right hand. The Tar Heels return senior swingman Theo Pinson and junior wing guard Kenny Williams III, while March hero Luke Maye ' who hit the last-second shot against Kentucky to send UNC to the Final Four ' is the lone returnee up front.
Who's new: The Tar Heels found experienced help in Pittsburgh graduate transfer Cameron Johnson to fill Jackson's role on the wing. There's also a freshman class led by guard Jalek Felton and includes size in Garrison Brooks, Sterling Manley and Brandon Huffman.
The Skinny: The return of Berry and Pinson gives the Tar Heels toughness and leadership, and they can use plenty of combinations on the perimeter with a deep backcourt. The question is whether they can find reliable production inside considering their Hall of Fame coach prefers to have two big men and emphasizes rebounding. How the Tar Heels answer that will determine whether they have any chance to make it to the final Monday night in April for a third consecutive season.
NOTRE DAME: Last season: 26-10, lost in second round of NCAA Tournament
Who's gone: G Steve Vasturia, F V.J. Beachem, F Patrick Mazza, F Matt Ryan (transfer to Vanderbilt)
Who's back: F Bonzie Colson. The long-armed, 6-foot-6 senior is the preseason ACC Player of the Year choice after averaging 17.8 points and 10.1 rebounds per game last season, including 19 double-doubles and 43 percent shooting from beyond the 3-point arc; G Matt Farrell. The gritty, 6-foot-1 senior point guard averaged 14.1 points and 5.4 assists; F Martinas Geben. The 6-foot-10 senior from Lithuania helped lead his country to the gold medal in the World University Games after averaging 3.1 points and 3.4 rebounds and shooting nearly 65 percent from the field last season for the Irish;; G Rex Pflueger. The 6-6 junior will be asked to provide the 3-point offense lost with the graduation of Vasturia and Beachem; F John Mooney. A 6-foot-9 sophomore who is expected to help Geben on the boards along with 6-foot-8 F Elijah Burns and 6-foot-7 F Austin Torres.
Who's new: F D.J. Harvey. A 6-foot-6' swingman who averaged 17.3 points, 8.7 rebounds and 2.9 assists as a senior at DeMatha (Md.) High School; G Nikola Djogo. A 6-foot-7 guard from Canada who sat out his freshman year and could provide some 3-point offense off the bench.
The Skinny: In 17 seasons, Brey has 382 victories, 11 shy of Digger Phelps' all-time mark of 393. ' In four seasons in the ACC, his Irish have appeared in the ACC title game twice (2015, '17) ' In the last three seasons, Notre Dame has seven NCAA victories and made back-to-back Elite Eight appearances in 2015 and '16.
PREVIEW
No. 20 UNC seeks road success vs. Notre Dame

Despite losing each of their first two road games in ACC play to start the season, No. 20 North Carolina remains confident that its best basketball is ahead.

"It's a long season," senior forward Theo Pinson told the Raleigh News & Observer. "We have to stay together. You go through ups and downs but this can only make us better."

The Tar Heels (13-4, 2-2) will try to earn their first conference road victory when they visit Notre Dame on Saturday evening at Purcell Pavilion at the Joyce Center. The Tar Heels are coming off a 30-point win at home over Boston College but have lost two of their past three contests.

Meanwhile, Notre Dame (13-4, 3-1) also has something to prove after losing 60-53 against Georgia Tech on Wednesday night. The Fighting Irish played without two of their top contributors, forward Bonzie Colson and guard Matt Farrell, both of whom have been sidelined by injuries.

The duo's absences have led to more prominent roles for players such as sophomore forward Josh Mooney, who posted career highs in points (11) and rebounds (eight) against the Yellow Jackets. Fellow forward Martinas Geben also has stepped forward and is averaging a double-double in conference play with 10.5 points and 10.3 rebounds.

"We lost scoring and rebounding," Geben said to the South Bend Tribune in reference to Colson's and Farrell's injuries. "We all need to collectively step into those roles and produce."

The Tar Heels will try to avoid losing three conference games on the road for the first time since 2014. The program has posted a winning record on the road in ACC games in each of the past seven seasons and 11 of 14 years with Roy Williams as coach.

North Carolina is led in scoring by Luke Maye (18.2 points per game) and Joel Berry II (17.6). The Tar Heels have not had two players average 17-plus points for a season since the 1983-84 campaign, when Michael Jordan (19.6) and Sam Perkins (17.6) led the team.

Colson (21.4 points per game) and Farrell (15.9) account for a huge chunk of Notre Dame's offense. Look for the team to turn to T.J. Gibbs (14.6) to provide perimeter scoring while Geben, Mooney and others work down low.

Gibbs earned ACC Player of the Week honors for the first week of January after averaging 20 points and 5.5 rebounds in wins over North Carolina State and Syracuse.

Notre Dame coach Mike Brey has instilled a disciplined approach in his team so far. The Fighting Irish average 12.7 fouls per game, which is the best mark in the country.

On North Carolina's bench, Williams will seek his 830th career coaching win. That would pull him even with Mount St. Mary's Jim Phelan for seventh place in Division I history, according to the program. Williams' mentor, Dean Smith, won 879 games during his career.

This marks the 29th all-time meeting. North Carolina holds a commanding 21-7 series edge.
