KEY GAME INFORMATION
FLORIDA ST: Last season: 26-9, lost to Xavier in NCAA Tournament second round.
Who's gone: G Dwayne Bacon, F Jonathan Isaac, G Xavier Rathan-Mayes, C Michael Ojo, F Jarquez Smith.
Who's back: G Terance Mann is the Seminoles' leading returning scorer (8.4) and rebounder (4.5) along with being one of the team's more accurate shooters (57.9 percent from the field the past two seasons). G PJ Savoy is likely to move into the starting lineup and is the team's best 3-point shooter, making 40 of 100 last season. C Christ Koumadje is the tallest player in school history at 7-foot-4. He is imposing in the paint as a shot blocker but he is also one of the quickest players on the team and can easily get down the floor.
Who's new: G M.J. Walker. He was considered the top shooting guard in the nation by several recruiting services and is the second McDonald's All-American in the past three seasons to attend the school. C Ikey Obiagu is raw on the offensive end, but he could end up leading the team in blocked shots.
The Skinny: Despite returning just one starter, the Seminoles were picked to finish eighth in the Atlantic Coast Conference preseason poll. A lot of that is due to Hamilton often using 12 players in games last season and having an up-tempo style that averaged 82.1 points. With Mann and Savoy at the guards, it should be a better team from the perimeter but it is not as athletically gifted as last year. If ever there was a team that needed to win by a committee approach, it might be this one. If Hamilton can fuse the newcomers with what he has returning, they have a chance at making return NCAA Tournament trips for the first time since 2012.
NC STATE: Last season: 15-17, second straight losing season.
Who's gone: PG Dennis Smith Jr., G Terry Henderson, G Maverick Rowan, F Ted Kapita, C BeeJay Anya.
Who's back: Sophomore Markell Johnson is expected to inherit Smith's starting job and join junior Torin Dorn as returning guards. N.C. State will have much more returning experience up front with sophomore Omer Yurtseven, senior Abdul-Malik Abu (recovering from a sprained knee ligament) and fifth-year senior Lennard Freeman.
Who's new: N.C. State brought into two graduate transfer guards in Allerik Freeman (Baylor) and Sam Hunt (North Carolina A&T), as well as freshman Lavar Batts Jr. to the backcourt. The school had hoped to have freshman guard Braxton Beverly, but the NCAA has denied an appeal to its ruling that he must sit this year after taking summer classes at Ohio State before getting his release following a late coaching change.
The Skinny: Keatts is taking over for Mark Gottfried, who got the Wolfpack to four straight NCAA Tournaments then saw things come undone in the past two years (9-27 in the ACC those seasons). Keatts, the former UNC Wilmington coach, has pushed his new team in conditioning for his up-tempo offense and a version of the fullcourt press from his time under Rick Pitino at Louisville. This is a reboot year for N.C. State, picked 12th in the 15-team ACC with only four players back from last year's main rotation and putting in a new system.

Surprising N.C. State bids to jolt No. 25 Florida State

RALEIGH, N.C. -- North Carolina State has a chance to bolster its late-season credentials as it continues to move through the Atlantic Coast Conference as one of the surprise teams.

No. 25 Florida State is looking to achieve more as well.

"Our team is in position where if we're going to finish the season strong, I think now is the time to really come together and really make some significant progress," Florida State coach Leonard Hamilton said. "It appears our team now has an understanding that we need to be more consistent as we finish the season."

The teams meet Sunday night at PNC Arena.

Florida State (19-8, 8-7 ACC) hasn't played since last Sunday, while N.C. State won its third straight game Tuesday night when it defeated visiting Boston College.

"We're locked in," N.C. State coach Kevin Keatts said. "I told our guys that it's easy to say right now, 'I'm banged up. I'm a little bit hurt,' but who isn't? Everybody in the country that's still playing meaningful basketball has got some bruises, and certainly we've got to be able to play through some of that. I want our guys to be mentally strong at this point in the year."

This is another chance for N.C. State (19-9, 9-6) to enhance its NCAA Tournament stock.

"Every win builds confidence, and I know you're talking about 'bubbles' and all of that, but I don't even talk about that," Keatts said. "I don't even know about all of the brackets that say where you're at. I just try to win the next game. I'm excited. I don't take it for granted.

"Our guys have played very good basketball. To have nine wins in this conference, it means a lot. I'm proud of these guys. I can't think of a game where these guys didn't give tremendous effort and played hard."

Both teams have a chance to finish in the upper half of the conference standings if they can break free from the cluster in the middle.

The Seminoles have won their past two games, returning to the national rankings for the first time in more than a month. In a pair of home games, they needed overtime to defeat Clemson and then topped last-place Pittsburgh.

Without a mid-week game, Hamilton said his team had a chance to re-energize physically.

"We're working on fine tuning the small things trying to make sure were fundamentally sound," Hamilton said. "We have only one experienced player on our team and that's Terance Mann. ... so we need all the practice time we can get. We are a team that still has got a lot of room for improvement."

Florida State's P.J. Savoy has been back for three games after missing seven games with an injury. He shot 5-for-7 on 3-pointers against Pittsburgh.

"Whenever he's in the game, he stretches the floor," Hamilton said. "He's a very valuable part of our game plan and we missed it and I'm hoping now that we have everybody back (so) we can kind of have a consistent rotation."

The Wolfpack have their own perimeter firepower. N.C. State guards Braxton Beverly and Sam Hunt combined to shoot 9-for-10 on 3-pointers Tuesday night.

"We'll keep doing what we're doing now and keep getting wins," Beverly said.

This is the only scheduled meeting between the teams this season.
