KEY GAME INFORMATION
VIRGINIA TECH: Last season: 21-12, lost in first round of NCAA Tournament
Nickname: Hokies
Coach: Buzz Williams, fifth season
Conference: Atlantic Coast.
Who's gone: G Justin Bibbs (13.3 ppg. Led the team with 66 3s), G Devin Wilson, their best defensive player
Who's back: G Justin Robinson (14 ppg, 185 assists) is a speedy 6-foot-2 guard who can take over a game (he had 32 points in a victory against NC State last year). F Kerry Blackshear Jr. (12.5 ppg, 5.9 rpg), who can be hard to stop when not in foul trouble. G Nickeil Alexander-Walker (10.7 ppg, 58 3s), who showed maturity beyond his years as a freshman. G Ahmed Hill (10.6 ppg, 64 3s), who shot 41 percent from deep. G/F Chris Clarke (8.2 ppg, team-best 6.3 rpg) whose speed can be an asset, but also a liability (75 turnovers). F P.J. Horne, who shot 59 percent from the field and showed flashes of being a spark off the bench.
Who's new: G Ty Outlaw, who shot 48.7 percent from 3-point range in 2016-17 before missing last season with a torn ACL.
The Skinny: The Hokies have thrived in an us-against-the-world approach in Williams' first four seasons, winning two ACC games their first season and 10 each of the past three years. With prospects for a third consecutive NCAA Tournament bid for the first time in school history, how they handle being on the expectations side of the ledger will go a long way toward determining how successful they can be.
Expectations: At No. 15, the Hokies are ranked as high as they ever been to start a season, and they are picked fifth in the ACC after much more dire prognostications in previous seasons. With eight experienced players returning, Williams also has more experience than he's had during his tenure in Blacksburg. A quick return to form of Ty Outlaw after missing last season with a torn ACL would help their prospects immensely.
N CAROLINA: Last season: 26-11, reached second round of NCAA Tournament.
Nickname: Tar Heels.
Coach: Roy Williams.
Conference: Atlantic Coast.
Who's gone: The program has lost mainstays from its 2017 national championship winner in point guard Joel Berry II ' a former Final Four most outstanding player ' and swingman Theo Pinson.
Who's back: Forward Luke Maye followed his last-second shot to beat Kentucky in the 2017 NCAA Elite Eight with a star-turning junior season, averaging 16.9 points and 10.1 points to be an Associated Press third-team All-American. He's now a preseason AP All-American and picked as ACC player of the year. Starters Cameron Johnson (12.4 points) and Kenny Williams (11.4) are back on the perimeter, which also has junior point guard Seventh Woods competing to take Berry's job. There's also a rotation of serviceable big men, led by sophomores Garrison Brooks and Sterling Manley.
Who's new: The Tar Heels have their best recruiting class in years, perhaps not coincidentally as they emerge from years of uncertainty due to a now-resolved NCAA academic case. Wing Nassir Little is the kind of five-star McDonald's All-American and possible one-and-done talent that shunned the Tar Heels in recent years. There's another McDonald's All-American in Coby White, an top-25 national recruit who will compete to be the new point guard after setting a North Carolina state scoring record with more than 3,500 points in high school. And the 6-foot-7 Rechon "Leaky" Black brings size and versatility to the perimeter.
The Skinny: There's no questioning talent and scoring potential on a team with Maye, Johnson and Williams joined by the touted rookie class. There are two main questions here: the Tar Heels need White or Woods to play well at the point with Berry gone, and that revolving door of big men needs to provide some interior toughness that was lacking at times as UNC leaned heavily on a small-ball lineup last year. If the eighth-ranked Tar Heels resolve both issues, this is a Final Four contender.
Expectations: Las Vegas oddsmakers have UNC at 10-to-1 to win it all, tied with Villanova for the fifth-best odds nationally.
PREVIEW
No. 9 Virginia Tech, No. 13 UNC collide with ACC lead at stake

Two ranked teams that have bounced back after lopsided losses are set to clash with sole possession of first place in the ACC on the line -- at least for one day.

No. 9 Virginia Tech visits No. 13 North Carolina on Monday night at the Smith Center.

North Carolina (14-4, 4-1) has won twice since an 83-62 home loss to Louisville. That includes Saturday's 85-76 victory at Miami when the Tar Heels shot 55 percent from the field, marking their first game at 50 percent or better in an eight-game stretch.

"We need everybody's shooting percentages to be better," North Carolina coach Roy Williams said.

Virginia Tech (15-2, 4-1) recovered from a blowout loss at No. 4 Virginia to drub Wake Forest on Saturday.

Getting back in a groove was important to the Hokies, who fell 81-59 in the much-anticipated in-state matchup with Virginia.

"I thought we were much more 'us,' and that is not to take anything at all away from the University of Virginia," Virginia Tech coach Buzz Williams said after the Wake Forest game. "... The response from our team, it speaks to how they were raised, it speaks to their characters and to their work ethic."

Virginia Tech has reached the 80-point mark in 10 games this season, winning all of those.

North Carolina's defense has been spotty at times, so that could be a factor in this matchup.

North Carolina often excels on the offensive end. The team notched 26 assists in the Miami game for the second-highest total of the season.

"Everything looks better when it's going in the basket," Roy Williams said. "For us, I liked the way we took care of the basketball in the second half."

Virginia Tech dealt with a different kind of dilemma. Because of foul trouble, the Hokies had to dig deep into the bench in Saturday's game.

"I thought the poise and maturity of our team was really good in response to that," Buzz Williams said.

The reserves accounted for 25 points in the 87-71 decision against Wake Forest.

"We just know we've got to contribute to the group," Virginia Tech reserve forward Ty Outlaw said. "It's not about who's in. It's about us, no matter who's on the floor."

The large chunk of playing time for backups might ultimately benefit the Hokies if some energy was conserved for the quick turnaround for Monday night's game.

North Carolina's depth has been impacted by the absence of backup forward Sterling Manley, who has a knee injury that has kept him out of games for three weeks.

Freshman Nassir Little has helped with production off the North Carolina bench, scoring 11 and 12 points in the past two games despite logging only a total of 30 minutes in the two games. Roy Williams said seeing Little take the ball to the basket has been a plus for the Tar Heels.
