KEY GAME INFORMATION

FLORIDA: Last season: 21-13, losing in second round of NCAA Tournament.
Nickname: Gators.
Coach: Mike White.

Who's gone: Point guard Chris Chiozza, swingman Egor Koulechov, center John Egbunu.
Who's back: Guard Jalen Hudson entered the NBA draft but failed to get an invite to the combine, so he returned for his senior season. Hudson averaged a team-high 15.5 points last year and gives the Gators a proven scorer to play alongside shooting guard KeVaughn Allen and highly touted freshman point guard Andrew Nembhard. Forwards Keith Stone and Kevarrius Hayes get some much-needed help in the frontcourt with the return of Chase Johnson (concussion) and Isaiah Stokes (knee).
Who's new: Nembhard is expected to be one of the top freshmen in the conference, maybe even the country. A 6-foot-5 Canadian who attended high school in nearby Orlando, Nembhard led his country to a silver medal in the FIBA U18 Americas. White calls him the best passer he's ever coached, saying "that is his gift." Forward Keyontae Johnson and guard Noah Locke will be role players as freshmen.
The Skinny: The Gators faltered in February, limped into the tournament and failed to get past the opening weekend. Still, back-to-back NCAA Tournament appearances are notable progress for White, who's entering his fourth season at Florida. Team needs to be better at home after dropping five of 17 games in the O'Connell Center in 2017-18.
Expectations: Anything short of another NCAA Tournament berth would be a disappointment in White's fourth season. They have enough talent, experience and depth to make a lengthy postseason run, especially if Nembhard is as good as advertised.

MICHIGAN: Last season: 33-8, reached national title game.
Nickname: Wolverines.
Coach: John Beilein.
Conference: Big Ten.
Who's gone: Forward Moe Wagner, guard Muhammad-Ali Abdur-Rahkman, guard-forward Duncan Robinson.
Who's back: Charles Matthews passed on the NBA and returned to the Wolverines. He averaged 13 points a game last season. Point guard Zavier Simpson shot just 29 percent from 3-point range and 52 percent on free throws, but his defensive intensity set the tone for much of Michigan's success. Jordan Poole averaged only 6 points a game as a freshman, but his 3-pointer at the buzzer beat Houston to send Michigan to the Sweet 16. Isaiah Livers and Eli Brooks combined for 34 starts in 2017-18. At 7-foot-1, Jon Teske gives the Wolverines a big defensive presence inside, and he's shown flashes on offense.
Who's new: Freshmen Brandon Johns and David DeJulius were rated No. 60 and No. 93 in ESPN's Class of 2018 Top 100. Ignas Brazdeikis averaged 28.4 points as a senior at Orangeville Prep in Canada.
The Skinny: Michigan's defensive resurgence helped the Wolverines to a Sweet 16 berth in 2017 and last season's Final Four run. Wagner will be tough to replace, and a lot may depend on how much Poole, Livers and the new freshmen can contribute offensively.
Expectations: Las Vegas oddsmakers have Michigan at 35-1 to win the NCAA Tournament, the same odds as rival Michigan State. Only 11 teams ' and none from the Big Ten ' are given shorter odds.

Matthews-led Michigan looks to hold off Florida

Charles Matthews didn't resemble himself much while limping through the Big Ten tournament.

But the senior guard appears to be just fine now after playing a starring role in the first round of the NCAA Tournament.

Matthews is no longer bothered by an injured right ankle and he'll look to help Michigan advance to the Sweet 16 when the second-seeded Wolverines face 10th-seeded Florida (20-15) in Saturday's second-round West Region contest at Des Moines, Iowa.

Matthews had 22 points on 8-of-12 shooting and collected 10 rebounds as the Wolverines (29-6) posted a 74-55 victory over Montana on Thursday.

The 6-foot-6 Matthews injured the ankle in a loss to Michigan State on Feb. 24 and then missed the final three games of the regular season.

He returned for the Big Ten tourney but wasn't effective as he averaged five points and two rebounds in the three games. He made just 6 of 21 field-goal attempts.

"Basketball is a funny game," Michigan coach John Beilein said in the postgame press conference. "You're two weeks off. It's really different to step back on and be yourself."

Matthews seemed to be back in his comfort level on Thursday as he posted his sixth 20-point outing and third double-double of the season.

"Dealing with any injury can be tough and understanding it's a process to get back to where you were before it happened," Matthews said during the postgame press conference. "I had a great group of guys around me. Our athletic trainer was tremendous helping me with rehab and the coaching staff did a great job of supporting me as well, and I was able to take my time and get back to where I wanted to be."

Michigan will likely need another solid outing from Matthews when it faces a pesky Florida squad that posted a 70-61 victory over seventh-seeded Nevada on Thursday.

Senior center Kevarrius Hayes scored 16 points and senior guard Jalen Hudson added 15 but the Gators won due to a defense that limited the Wolf Pack to 34.5 percent from the field and 5 of 24 from 3-point range.

But it wasn't all easy as Florida let an 18-point, second-half lead dwindle to two before scoring the game's final seven points.

"I felt like we didn't pay attention enough, felt like we got a little bit of a lead, a little too casual, and reminded the team it was far from over," Hayes said during the postgame press conference. "We had to stay locked in, in the moment and we had to stand together and eventually we dug ourselves out and could do enough to finish the game."

Gators coach Mike White pointed to his team's slate as being a prime reason why his squad held off the Wolf Pack's charge.

"Playing in the SEC and then playing the nonconference schedule that we played, it seems like we've had, I'm just guessing off the top of my head, 15 games like that where late in the game, it's a one- or two-possession game within a couple of minutes, whether you're up or down," White said in the postgame press conference. "We had a stretch during the season where we lost those games."
