| | | MICHIGAN: No team in the Big Ten lost as many key players as the Wolverines did. These subtractions will force SG Caris LeVert (12.9 PPG, 4.3 RPG, 2.9 APG) to pick up the slack as the go-to scorer. LeVert is an excellent shooter, knocking down 41% threes last season, and he has the ability to get his shot off at any time. While he is a big threat to hit from deep, he can also put the ball on the floor and get to the rim. LeVert will have to score the ball more this season to give the Wolverines a chance to win, and he is capable of becoming an all-conference performer. PG Derrick Walton Jr. (7.9 PPG, 3.0 RPG, 2.9 APG) had his ups and downs as a freshman, but showed that he has a chance to be a star. In a game against rival Michigan State, Walton had 19 points and six rebounds in an upset road victory. The Wolverines could have one of the best backcourts in the country, as sophomore SG Zak Irvin (6.7 PPG, 43% threes) could play a role similar to what LeVert did last season. Michigan will have to get some scoring from the interior if it is going to emerge as a Big Ten contender. | | MARYLAND: It has been a tough offseason for the Terrapins, as many players have transferred to different schools. However, Maryland is able to build its team around F/G Dez Wells (14.9 PPG, 4.3 RPG, 2.2 APG), who is one of the most dynamic players in the Big Ten. Wells is an explosive athlete that will not hesitate to attack the rim. He also has the task every night of having to guard the team's best scorer. Wells has the makings of an all-conference player, but he will need to get help from his teammates. With all of those transfers, SG Jake Layman (11.7 PPG, 5.0 RPG, 1.1 SPG) will be asked upon to step up and give the Terrapins another all-conference-caliber player. SF Evan Smotrycz (11.0 PPG, 6.0 RPG, 37% threes) gives Maryland an inside-outside threat. Maryland had the looks of a deep team with a lot of scoring ability, but with the transfers, these three will have to shoulder much more of the load. |

*Michigan-Maryland Preview* ===========================
Michigan (14-13) at Maryland (23-5), 12:00 p.m. EDT
(AP) - Dez Wells led Maryland in scoring during his first two seasons and ranks 25th in school history with 1,292 points.
His legacy, however, will be the leadership he provided on coach Mark Turgeon's first NCAA tournament team with the Terrapins.
Wells will be the focal point of Senior Day when Maryland closes out its home schedule against Michigan on Saturday.
The 6-foot-5 swingman scored 26 points Tuesday in the 14th-ranked Terrapins' rousing 59-53 win over No. 5 Wisconsin. Although his clutch shooting was pivotal, Wells' demeanor proved just as valuable in the team's biggest victory of the season.
"It's a good feeling when your senior leader says, 'It's all right, coach. I've got this. There's no way we're not going to win this game,'" Turgeon said. "He made some big-time plays. And he made guys better."
Wells was 9 for 17 from the floor, made all seven of his free throws and had team highs of seven rebounds and four assists while committing not a single turnover.
"Coach wants me to do everything great. I guess this was a glimpse of what he wants me to be," Wells said.
The win was the Terps' fifth straight and improved them to 2-2 against ranked opponents this season. Maryland (23-5, 11-4) is two games back of the first-place Badgers in the Big Ten with three to play. The Terps close with games at Rutgers and Nebraska.
After averaging a team-high 13.1 points as a sophomore, Wells scored 14.9 per game last season, but Maryland wasn't good enough to reach the NCAA tournament - a situation Wells vowed to rectify this year as his team prepared to make its debut in the Big Ten following a 61-year run in the Atlantic Coast Conference.
"We wanted to do something special in our first season in the Big Ten," Wells said. "This is a winning program and we just want to keep that going."
Wells certainly has done his part to help Maryland become the surprise of the conference. This is by far Turgeon's best squad since he replaced Gary Williams in 2011, and while freshman guard Melo Trimble deserves much of the credit, leading the team with 16.1 points and 3.1 assists per game, the Terps wouldn't be here without Wells.
"Dez is a senior, he's a veteran guy," Trimble said. "He's been through it all. He gives me key points and sometimes I give him my words of wisdom, but he already knows some of it. He really teaches me how to be aggressive and stuff like that."
Although Wells' season was interrupted for a month with a fractured right wrist, he's second on the team to Trimble with an average of 15.1 points.
"He's had a lot of great games for us. He's been a great player for Maryland for three years," Turgeon said. "That's what you expect out of a guy who grows with the program - you expect him to do what he does."
After fans show their appreciation for Wells and over a half-dozen other seniors in a pregame ceremony, the Terps will turn their attention to the Wolverines (14-13, 7-8), who are coming off a five-day break following the definite high point of a mediocre season.
Spike Albrecht scored 16 points in a 64-57 win over then-No. 24 Ohio State on Sunday that ended a five-game slide and helped knock the rival Buckeyes from the rankings.
"It was a huge win for us coming off that losing streak," said Zak Irvin, who added 15 points, seven rebounds and four assists. "Our guys had a great mindset today."
Michigan has faced Maryland only twice in the last 14 years and lost both times, including a 75-70 defeat in College Park on Dec. 3, 2008, in the most recent meeting.
The Wolverines are 1-3 against ranked teams this season.
